I have a plan [Battlestar Galactica]
« on: March 20, 2015, 09:48:17 AM »
Some time ago I got the BSG board game. Of course painting the tiny ships was not enough, I immediately thought 'why don't I get minis of the cast, so we don't have to play with card tokens anymore?'. So this is how the plan started...

Stage 1 of my plan involved looking for already existing minis. Hasslefree already have four members of the crew, so that makes it quite easier! So here we have not-Adama and not-Tigh:

Caprica Six is not part of the core game, but what the frak, I couldn't skip that mini!

The not-Starbuck mini involved some decisionmaking. The original model is wearing just a sports bra (which is great, don't take me wrong, gorgeous girl), but I didn't feel that was what the character was about, even if she appeared like that a couple of times in the series. I really thought the tee & tank top Fleet uniform combination woud look better, so I sculpted that.

You can find a few more pics and explanations on the blog:

I haven't been able to spot any other minis of the cast. So Stage 2 of the plan involves some extra work. That will come in a few days ;)

Excellent! I seem to recall seeing some pilots recently - I thought Crooked dice but I'm mistaken :(

Damn, have shadows of figs for conversion are vaguely in my mind, but nothing concrete. I even wondered about some of the recent not-Dune figs.  o_o

I really thought the tee & tank top Fleet uniform combination woud look better, so I sculpted that.

Just painting the clothes on, with some proper edge shading, wouldn't have been sufficient?

Doug

Edit: Oh, wait, 'determined person.' RIGHT!

take a look at Akula's BSG project too (sorry, your pics are blocked at work so cannot comment on them) as he has some good ideas (for an Arsenal supporter)

Thank you! Oh, that's right, Akula did some work on that direction, didn't he? Oh, I'll have to check! :)

In the meantime, I can bring Stage 2 of the plan ::). For this one I looked for suitable minis I could use with minor conversions. As I was using the Hasslefree ranges, I kept it that way (but of course I'm open to suggestions). I used these for Helo and Boomer:

I'm not quite happy with the results; the flightsuits proved themselves tricky, both in sculpting the pieces and achieving the right colour (I spent some time trying to get that satin look). In time I think I may redo these two. Some things can be saved about Helo (apart of the chunky haircut ;D)

But I don't think I got it with Boomer:

I may have to look for another minis :?

Anyway, another guy which was way easier to get was Tom Zarek. Just needed a man in a suit (Hasslefree's version of a famous secret agent) and a slight work on the details: face, hair, taking the gun out...

You can find everything on the blog:

I'll take a tour on the internet in search for minis or ideas (all suggestions welcome!). In a few days I'll come back with Stage 3... ;)

Stage 3 of my plan is just about all those minis I wasn't able to find, so I was forced to sculpt them. Well, I guess 'sculpt' is quite a strong word; my skills are what they are, so it's more like 'add putty randomly until you get stressed and then go onto another mini' ;D

Anyway, I'm just trying to learn, so I dare to show you these. First one is Chief Tyrol:

Apollo (ehm, well, a fat guy who needs those arms to be sculpted again)

Laura Roslin was quite a headache. Wasn't able to get anything better than this.

Finally, Gaius Baltar:

Adding these plastic hands was a mistake. They are disproportionate and the whole point of this was learning how to sculpt. I will remove them, but this shows my main problem, the lack of patience and the urge to see results, whatever those may be :?

Well, anyway, this is the cast:

This was everything I was going to do about this, but whoah, suddenly I saw these the other day:

Apparently the guy will run an Indiegogo campaign when he has some more stuff, so I guess my project will have a Stage 4 after all... :D

Great stuff. Suber.
All of those figures are instantly recognisable.
 :-* 8) :-*

As for figures, AKULA did have some, as I bought a fair few for future use.
He may have some left.
If not, I could spare a few.

If you intend to expand the cast, of course......

That Facebook page for the Fornax game also shows an " archaic" centurion.  Nice.
This is my boomstick!

Lovely work Suber on those conversions.

Makes me want to get some more done on my own project this week.

Thank you very much! I've been having a look at your own work and I must say it's truly amazing and inspirational. I just wanted these minis for the board game, but you make me want the whole series crew for a full-scale game!

BTW, that leads me exactly to what Malebolgia pointed out, the Centurions Indiegogo campaign. I'm definitely backing it. I love the minis:

Those Cylons are Massive.

They look a little too tall for me (I'm Weird when it comes to how tall my toys are), but they are really nice looking models.

More interesting is that he's looking to do other sci fi creatures in the future if this goes well.
