Plastic hooded cultists... if they're as generic as the henchmen are be prepared to sell tons of them.

Joe, as most people here no doubt, I've seen the pics of some of the rulebook pages in a review done on the game/rulebook.

On page 23 we see a list of Soldiers from which players make their Warband selections.

The far right hand column lists the weapons/armour/equipment etc that a Soldier has. Are these items locked in concrete, or is there another section of the rulebook that provides points costs for weapons/armour/equipment so that certain Soldiers can be re-equipped (or additionally equipped). For example, the Barbarian has a Two Handed Weapon...is it possible for me to give him a Hand Weapon and Shield instead (or even in addition to the Two Handed Weapon)? Or could I perhaps give the Barbarian a Bow to carry as well as his Two Handed Sword so that if late in the game I find him too far away from an enemy to engage in melee, I could perhaps instead let fly with an arrow or two?

In one of the battle reports, one player (I think it might have been you) rolled up a Magic Dagger as a Treasure, this was given to the Thief in the Warband from memory. Presumably because it is a weapon that is listed in the far right column for that Soldier type. Could the Magic Dagger have been given to a Soldier who does not have Dagger listed in this column, say the Apothecary or Tracker for instance?

I'd buy the Undead Encounters freely now. There will be some Undead (not sure what yet) for the Lich Lord supplement, but that's not till November. The Mantic figures in the Undead Encounters will work perfectly till then, and maybe after if we don't make Frostgrave Zombies etc.

This fellow
is coming free with Level 5 Wizards and will be on sale in November.

Soldiers have fixed weapons. However, you shouldn't get too caught up on the names of the soldiers. These are just labels used to define them. If you want a barbarian equipped with a bow, just buy a ranger, but use a more barbarian looking figure. If you want sword and shield, just go with an infantryman. If you want your barbarian wearing chainmail, just get the Templar.

All soldiers can carry one piece of magical equipment. In the case of weapons or armour, it must be the same type as one they already carried or wore.

That's an excellent mini, and I'll definitely be picking one of those up! Thanks for sharing the pic mate :)

Thanks for the info there Joe, much appreciated mate. I guess it would start to get a bit hard to balance the cost of Soldiers if you started to introduce too many variables, like the addition of weapon changes etc. A little coolness is lost, I guess, but it's no biggy. It certainly means I won't feel like I have to assmble and paint several of the same type of mini (Barbarian with THW, Barbarian with THW and Bow, Barbarian with THW, Bow and Dagger, Barbarian with Bow, Hand Weapon and Shield, etc, etc, etc)

Hi there! As many, I'm in for level 5, and it is the review in GarageGamers what convinced me.

I noted that many soldiers are very similar, despite their weapons and armor. Are some different skills or powers to each of them? I mean, what is the advantage of a templar against a knight, apart from the two handed sword? Why using a thief, if it is weaker than a thug? Or a tracker against a ranger, apart of the +1 in Will? Maybe is only my D&D education, but the logical move for me is to choose specialists not only for their fight/shoot skills, but also for their special abilities: a tracker could ignore difficult terrain, a thief could give you an opportunity to stole an item from your adversary, a barbarian could be resilient against magic and so on...

Not my preference for D20 systems (prefer 2D6) but willing to give this a try IF you can have dwarves... so can someone please confirm that dwarves are a henchman option? :).

As mentioned previously, there are no specific rules for dwarves, elves, goblins etc. but that doesn't mean you can't use the models you want and give them profiles from the henchmen already available.

Dwarf berserker with big axe? Use the barbarian stats. Easy.
Ray.

Many thanks Nick, now I just need to factor in the other wizards I'd like -- and that War Hound. Can't do without the War Hound!

No specific skills or abilities for the henchmen - these are minions, after all! To use a D&Dism, your Wizard and Apprentice are the PCs - they have the spells and the options to play with. Henchmen are there to protect the PCs and to grab loot - true of a Thug as of a Templar (not that I'd delegate the task of looting to a Templar!).

Why a Thief rather than a Thug? Or a Templar instead of a Knight? For me, there are four main arguments:

1. "Because I like this model/concept".
2. Play style. A Thief is a bit faster than most henchmen, and not as susceptible to magic, making him a good bet to run around and grab treasure - if that's my game-plan, he's more use than a Thug at the same price.
3. Risk/Reward. Why a Templar over a Knight? Perhaps because I'm willing to trade off reduced armour for the damage bonus from using a two-handed weapon (comes in VERY handy against some of the tougher creatures you might encounter).
4. Opportunity. Maybe I found a powerful magic greatsword in the loot from last game, and it's a shame to not use it just because I don't have a two-handed weapon user in my gang!

As always, your mileage may vary - I admit I lean far more towards telling a story than I do trying to maximise my gang.

...barbarian could be resilient against magic and so on...

He is! +3 Willpower should give him a good chance of shrugging off magical attacks. He's also tough in melee (+4), and has good health (14). No ranged capability, mind you, and his armour is low (10).

Haha, sounds like you've already talked yourself into it Phreedh!
You know me all too well, Gaz! :D Easily taken with anything shiny you know... :)

What keeps me from taking the plunge is simply a tiny, thin voice of reason in the back of my head. "You have maybe 50 unpainted wizard models already - you don't need 20 more!" - and it's really hard to argue against that. :D

I have plenty of zeds and skellies painted up already, but I really want need this guy.

Am I going to need Ghouls, please? I like Ghouls (as a concept - no, I do NOT have a fetisch for putrid skin and eating human flesh  >:D  ).

Just thinking out loud.  ;)

One for Joe/Nick/Smith; elementalists? Elementals? If so, just one type or small/medium /large like the constructs and demons?
