Highlanders
« on: October 16, 2008, 02:53:42 PM »
I am looking for a handful of Highlanders to use as a fictional bodyguard for my Queen Victoria in our VSF games.

anytihng from the Jacobean/1745 era will do as the figures should be wearing Ideally kilts, bonnets and have Claymore swords. I am familiar with Front Rank and Essex Miniatures, but haven't seen any others.

Anyone have any suggestions?

The other companies I know of are Old Glory, Bear's Den and Warrior Miniatures. The Bear's Den sculpts don't look half bad but I still think Front Rank has them beat.

Eureka's new ECW highlanders are probably just what you're looking for:

The only Eureka highlander with a claymore is in this pack  (top left)

Pity he is not wearing a kilt.

The other, more common, basket hilted sword as shown in the previous post is the broadsword.  It may be this weapon that you mean - even the British Army mistakenly calls the broadsword a "claymore".

For VSF?  Is this set in the 1880's?  ECW and Jacobite wars go way too far back for that.  I would suggest Crimean War ranges.  At least thats in the Victorian period.  But probably many Crimean War figures have bearskin hats.  Napoleonic highlander figures are likely to have bearskins too.  Maybe AWI highlanders would work, but that's a century earlier.

Check out Historifigs for some Crimean War highlanders.

Being fictional royal bodyguards, I think it's quite easy to imagine them having highly formalized, ceremonial uniforms, the designs of which haven't been tampered with for over 100 years.

The Queen would have her real Scottish bodyguard The Royal Company of Archers:

Maybe these are more appropriate?

Ahh yes, my apologies - you are quite correct. I am ashamed to admit we English often confuse things... ;)

Thanks for all the other comments. THis is stricly fiction, I am not concerned with historical accuracy, Its VSF after all, So my idea of Jacobite dress is too get a a stylised look.

You may want to know that the Jacobean garment is not actually a kilt - but a Feidhlidh Mór (if my spelling is correct - a 'great wrapping' or a 'belted plaid').

The modern kilt (as it was re-invented by Her Imperial Majesty) is suspended from the waist with a separate shoulder-plaid, whereas the original garment is in one piece. I have one.  ;)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

No, I'll be going for something a little more modern (I actually have a nice shirt to go with the belted plaid, very good for Rob Roy-style).

I was very tempted to get a full MacDonald pattern (no, not the yellow/red one...) tartan on our honeymoon trip to Scotland last year to celebrate my 1/16th Scottish heritage. I went with a Tweed jacked and a yellow moleskin waistcoat and a pair of brogues instead. I suppose I look like a twit in either getup.
