Some of the guys in my group want creatures to appear more frequently than the 25% chance every time a treasure is picked up.
Hence, here is a simple variant to cause additional rolls on the Random Encounter table 30% of the time (in addition to the roll that occurs due to treasure.
Variant Wandering Creature RuleAt the beginning of the game, nominate the four sides of the board North, South, East, and West.
At the beginning of each turn, before rolling initiative, roll a D20 and consult the following table:
Wandering Creature TableRoll | Result |
1-14 | All quiet. |
15 | Roll on the Random Encounter table, then place the creature(s) at the center of the North table edge (or as near the center as possible, if the center is impassible or otherwise a nonsensical place to place the creature(s)). |
16 | Roll on the Random Encounter table, then place the creature(s) at the center of the South table edge (or as near the center as possible, if the center is impassible or otherwise a nonsensical place to place the creature(s)). |
17 | Roll on the Random Encounter table, then place the creature(s) at the center of the East table edge (or as near the center as possible, if the center is impassible or otherwise a nonsensical place to place the creature(s)). |
18 | Roll on the Random Encounter table, then place the creature(s) at the center of the West table edge (or as near the center as possible, if the center is impassible or otherwise a nonsensical place to place the creature(s)). |
19 | Roll on the Random Encounter table, then place the creature(s) in a random quarter of the board, if possible out of line-of-site of any Player models, and no closer than 6" from any model. If there is no space at least 8" from all Player models, no creature(s) are placed. |
20 | As 19, and then roll on this Table a second time. If 20 is rolled again, place as 19, but make no further rolls. |
