Your Town during the 17th Century

Following the message about the map of Paris, I decided to look for documents about my living town during the 17th century.

So here's a map of Châtillon (or Chastillon) in 1693. Paris is about 4 miles / 6 kms towards the north (left of the map).



I live near the fountain ( Fontaine on the map ).

Here's a drawing of Chastillon during Louis XIV's reign. The village is viewed from the east side. Paris is towards the right side.

You lucky Europeans! My town in the 17th century would have been a cluster of cabins. Or possibly still a cluster of bark wigwams. And I live in one of the original 13 English Colonies!

Wow this has changed !

Although I live in Fontenay Aux Roses - you can see part of its territory on SgtPerrry's map - I don't know of any ancient map of it.

So I will produce a map of Merville, the place where I spent the first part of my life.



The precise location is on the north west of Merville, in the triangle delimited by two roads and a (small) river. This is not the same as the Normandy WW2 Merville. The map was made during the reign of Louis XIV who actually conquered this area of the Flanders.

This is north of Bethune, whose bourreau executed Milady in a famous novel !

Dumas wrote a novel called a day in Fontenay-Aux-Roses, a decameron-like collection of horror short stories. I love Dumas. And by the way : in the Mohicans of Paris, a huge great novel, the heroes wander around Chatillon and Fontenay.[/b]

I live in the upper right corner, right between the little church and the round fortification, which is called the "Zwinger" and was an artillery tower until the 19th century and a Gestapo Prison in ´33-45 - talk about the fickle tides of history.

My hometown is named "Valencia" in the map although its real name is Plencia (or Plentzia in basque) i dont think it was ever named like that so it must be a misspelling by the frenchman who made this map

A image on our city Mayenne in 1695,our house was built in 1720 just to the left of the of L’Hotel de Ville, after the dukedom was sold to Cardinal Marazin.
