Good sources for Statues?
« on: August 10, 2015, 07:07:12 PM »
I was scoping out amazon for little Buddha statues (my Frostgrave will have a definite East Asian/Himalayan vibe) as well as thinking of what medieval 54mm toy soldiers I have kicking around my parents' house that I could turn into statues for Frostgrave, and those both work. However, I was wondering if anyone had unexpected sources for junk to turn into statues.  Specifically, something akin to the robed old men statues in Peter Jackson's LOTR films. That more abstract, stylized statue is something a bit harder to represent just from adapting a larger figure, short of sculpting your own. Any ideas?

If you're willing to consider purpose made statues, Thomarillion have some very nice and reasonably priced ones. Shipping to the U.S. might be a deal-breaker though.

Lord of the rings chess pieces.  :D

There was a magazine which had a piece on the cover of each issue. They're fairly heavy, already come on a plinth and take paint easily. What's not to like?

Fairly cheap on eBay too.  ;)

This is more India than Himalaya, but these Ganesha charms would make great scenic details:

Trim the loop off this one, and you've got a nice Buddha statue:

This one is cool too:

Anyways, you could spend hours looking on etsy.  Tons of cheap metal charms that would be appropriate, especially if you're going for an eastern/buddhist sort of vibe.

Indian is totally fine as well, it fits the style I'm going for.  Also I'm kicking myself now for not thinking of Etsy...it looks like a goldmine for this sort of thing.

You might also use the term "dollhouse" in your google searching, as that has been useful to me in the past.  There is still a community for that sort of thing.

That and aquarium decorations.  It sounds stupid, but a lot of those things take paint fairly well and are decently in scale for 28mm.  Buddhas and Kali's and temple decorations abound in fishtank decorations.  Hope that helps.

My own quest for better statues has come up short though.  At present, I am amassing materials to scratch build a district of Frostgrave that resembles Old Yharnam, a feat that is actually fairly simple since a lot of old Mordheim terrain fits this aesthetic admirably, and gothic victorian pulp terrain fills the gaps well.  Except for one detail: I want to make some scatter terrain with clusters of statues, not unlike these:

Here's a collection of images as well: http://imgur.com/a/mgPg8#14

In the video game, statues like these are spread liberally around the center of the city and the Cathedral Ward, sometimes in thick clusters with five or six statues back to back in a circle.  They give a desperate and apocalyptic feeling to the place, and the way they are littered about seemed like a perfect excuse for scatter terrain and embellishments since they do a great job of providing cover.  But when it comes to vaguely renaissance robed women in 28mm or 54mm scale ... I have come up with NOTHING.  Nearest was a 1/12th scale Catholic Madonna statue for a dollhouse kit and that just does not have the same feeling to it.  I have also searched through lines of miniatures too, but robes and hoods and female character models almost inevitably come with action poses and dual wielding.  The reaper weeping angels are alright starting points as well, but I'm not enthused by them.

So if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.  Otherwise, I will probably have to scupt and kit-bash some things together, and then cast and mold my own.  This is something I have precious little experience with, so I'd rather at least have something as a starting point.

I got lots of stuff from AC Moore Local craft store all the treasure and the small Buddha head are beads.  These are smaller but you can get some larger stuff there( also I hear pet store fish tank stuff is useful but I have not tried that yet)

Ziterdes make some 28mm statues that might be vaguely in the direction you're looking for

I have that one, think they do a few, but their website is a pain to navigate! http://www.ziterdes.de/

While we are talking about fish tank ornaments and such like, I've used some of the plants in the past as jungle terrain and it worked well.

With regard to ornaments they often have sunken ships, possibly a good source of terrain if you wanted to adventure in the docks/river area.

While not perfect in your context I planned to use the following models for statues:

Years ago a friend had a hobby of casting chess sets in resin. He used to give me his miscasts. The Chinese style set made for great ancient statues (especially if I first attacked them with a hammer. Nothing says decay more than half the statue lying on the ground) If I recall the moulds used to come in part sets, e.g. pawn & knight/ bishop & rook etc. E-bay may well have some moulds cheap.
Also look in charity shops, I recently picked up a Ancient Egyptian style chess set for £1.50 because it was missing two pieces. I still got 30 metal statues (5p each !!!!)

That is much closer to what I am looking for!  But you are correct, I gave up on them because their website was rubbish to navigate.  Going back to it now, I still cannot seem to find that one.

In fact, the you linked, Tabletop Empires, is far easier to navigate and makes me quite unhappy that I do not have easier access to more of these statues and terrain pieces.  Drat!

Alas, those are the same as the ones I linked above.  I think they ill have to do, but I think I'll be spending quite a bit on greenstuff and the posing leaves something to be desired.

The more I search through the aquarium objects, the more I am impressed.  Consider Blue Ribbon pet products.  They have this Angkor Wat piece which seems ideally sized for an entrance way to a courtyard, temple complex, or even city wall.

Oh. Man.

That is pretty epic (specs say 6.75x4x9 inches).

I am going to *have* to get me a one of those...
