A Rather 'Short' Warband for Frostgrave.....WIP 25/09/15)
« on: August 12, 2015, 09:27:18 AM »
OK, so it seems that a few of us are going to give Frostgrave a go.

It means I shall have to make some snow drifts to use with my Krappefortt scenery, but that should be easy enough.
 :D

I am going to be using my Kislevite warband that was originally put together for Mordheim for this.
They are all old classic Citadel figures from the '80's (bar one!) and I am eager to use them as they still have not really been used since I got Pil to paint them for me some years ago.

The Wizard, not sure which school yet but probably going to be an Elementalist...

His Apprentice...

And a whole bunch of Henchman.....

.....should have most bases covered with that lot.
 ;)

The big question is: Is there a set base size?
I think not but I have been itching to put these on round bases for ages and this could be the excuse that I have been looking for...
 ;)

These are absolutely awesome - very different, but so fitting.  :-*  :-*  :-*

There is no set base size and there is also no arcs or facing. So you can use any reasonable base size or shape. The Official Frostgrave Soldiers Box Set does come with 25mm round bases though...if you are looking for some kind of standard to apply to man size creatures...

I've rebased all of my models onto 25mm because I like consistency and like things to be unambiguous, but honestly in my experience playing the game so far, it wouldn't matter if they were on square bases. I'd just say that you should make sure to agree with your opponent how you're playing them before the game starts (ie, agree whether measuring to the "corner" of the base is allowed for those just in/just out moments).

Personally I'd just pretend they're on 25mm round bases and measure as if they were. Assuming you have a gaming group that isn't in the "well, this is 1mm out" crowd when playing a casual fun game like Frostgrave of course :)

Put them on 25mm round bases.  ;)

Mainly because you want to but also because its what all the cool kids are doing.  :D

Ray.

Great models, and lovely painting too.

I'd leave them on square bases personally - I think that getting too precious on exact base size/shape is not worthwhile in a game like Frostgrave where things like dice results are already random enough to make such considerations fairly pointless anyway.  :)

These look the shizzle dizzle Paul!

Agree with all the comments thus far that basing isn't crucial.

Being the conformist sheep that I am all mine are mounted on standard 25mm slottas, but square would work equally well I reckon. Spells tend to be of the 'in line of sight' variety when it comes to ranged magic, so no problem there. For orthodox shooting centre to centre would seem to solve the issue with different bases.

I have read through the rules now. I created my warband at the weekend, just need to paint 'em. I have gone for a mixture of old Citadel & WHFB, Mordheim and those gorgeous Northstar soldiers. I'll have a nose round when I am on hols in Cornwall next week to see if any of the small independent shops have any old models - I got lucky with some Mordheim blister packs down there a couple of years back. I'm also making some treasure tokens at the moment. I think they will look better mounted on square 25mm bases.

I also have an elementalist wizard, as I like the bang-bang school of magic :D.

Looking forward to a game against these chaps, Paul :).

Thanks for the replies, comments and suggestions, chaps.
Much appreciated.
 :)

I am glad to hear that '25mm round' is the unofficial official base.

I shall go with the old two penny piece trick then, as it is not too far out and will allow them to blend in nicely with the rest of my figures.
 :D

Just be prepared for the outrage when I rip those base tabs off to do it......

Why not bend them flat with some pliers instead? Preserves the tab, and gives you a bigger area to stick to the pennies?

May be worth a go, if the bugger does not just snap.

That is what I thought.
I had a look through my Mordheim warbands and thought that these were most apt.
I am eyeing up a bunch of '80's Chaos Dwarves as well now....

That all works rather well!  I love seeing the classic old figures come out to play.

This is a very good tip - I've just used it to rebase 10 old Citadel knights onto the Frostgrave bases - only 1 tab snapped off, and fortunately that figure balanced very well on his feet, so hopefully he will stick as is.

I had been a bit stuck on how to base tabbed figures on thin bases - and this method works really well. I'd had a go at cutting a bit of a slot out of the base, but this was hard to do, and then need a lot of the tab cutting off.

Bending the tab and gluing with a little green stuff, works much better.
