When building terrain for wargaming, there is always a struggle between function and aesthetics. For what it's worth, here is my corn field solution.

Built on three 5 inch by 7 inch MDF art boards, using the JTT O Scale corn stalks. Simple: landscape the base, drill holes, insert corn stalks.

It's a compromise, and doesn't look all that great when you're looking straight down the rows. But I personally like to be able to move figures through the fields. I opted for straight orderly lines rather than oblong. I wish now I had at least rounded the corners a bit, but it is what it is.  :D

As for the rest:

The rail fences are Lemax Christmas village split-rail fences, now out of print but available now and then on eBay, cut down and stained with regular oil wood-stain, then drybrushed and landscaped. Stone wall is from Architects of War. Battle mat is from Deep Cut Studios. (I prefer terrain boards, but no longer have the time for their design and construction). Cabin and cart are 4Ground. Cabin has 4Ground's Old Bleached Wood Shingles, which I love.  :-* The wooded hedgerow is constructed of various landscaping materials on MDF bases. The bare trees are sagebrush armatures which I obtained from Timberline Scenery, which unfortunately I no longer can find on their web site.  :?

If you look closely, there is a (very large) crow on one of the fences. He is O scale and is from Scenic Express, and yes, I should have trimmed his feet down a bit!  :D
I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to; the long explanations needed by the young are wearying.

I like how you made the space between the rows wide enough to accommodate your miniature bases. I think I will steal that idea!

This thread has finally, after pushing the task ahead for quite some time, given me an insane idea of how I'm going to go about it. Have begun the preparations  ;D

Me too.

After some research in period texts, it appears that tobacco plants (I'm talking about privateers & pirates context, c.1700, in the French part of Saint-Domingue) required "topping" very low. So (for tobacco) O scale is not accurate. I've ordered a lot of HO scale tobacco plants from JTT scenary. I'll share pictures if I can do something with them.  :)

This thread has given me some great ideas for cornfields as I wasn't very happy with the door mat effects that are in my terrain box.  Purchased some JTT cornstalks on the back of this and will be putting them to good use on my next project.

Thanks to Jimbibbly and Malamute for the inspiration (still waiting for the video!)and oabee for his idea about separating the rows.

I have an idea to have the centre removable, leaving the outside corn intact. Now to figure out how to do that!!!

I'm thinking square bases from Warbases that have a number of stalks on them. They can then be lifted when required.

I'm going full monty on this. As I mentioned, I got an insane idea:

I am going to base each stalk individually on 15mm washers; that way I can place them in nice rows for modern agriculture, and scattered with squash/pumpkins/whatever in between for early americana settings. AND I never need to worry about having Space for placing minis inside the field, even if placing the stalks quite closely.

I am roughing up the edges of 10-20 of those li'l buggers per day atm (I do that with all my washer-bases, as paint rubs off the smooth edge too easily).

BTW, I just realized that JTT also does dry corn stalks for that North by Northwest crop duster scene...  :D

Perhaps not the nicest, but practical. If troops enter the field I can remove a few rows in the middle of the field:

I opened another thread not to highjack this one which is about corn fields...

That's the method I originally intended to use for my corn stalks. Am still prepping washers btw...  lol

A 28mm Conquest Miniatures Rogers Rangers advances through a corn field

And here is MY take on it all. Not as scenic as some, but a flexible system that looks decent on the table top. Read more about it on my blog: http://leadlegionaries.blogspot.com/2015/10/corn-rows-quick-and-simple.html

Figured I'd add my corn field to the list since I finally got around to making it!

I found a plastic house plant at IKEA a while back that I thought could work.

Here's the result I got:

The Ikea plants look very good. Do you have a model number?
