Using matte board and caulk
« on: October 09, 2015, 03:49:08 PM »
I recently jumped into historical gaming with a buddy and I have been feverishly working on terrain since. I found a really nice video on YouTube by gareson1 for using matte board and caulk to make dirt roads. I have since done this and it works great. I have been experimenting with matte board and caulk for some other things also. I made this lake the other day as a test and I was happy with the results. I used white caulk for the banks of the lake and clear silicone for the water. I have since used the matte board as a base for my stone walls and built some dirt roads. Both the board and the caulk are cheap and very easy to use, my next project is a tilled field. I will post pics if anyone is interested.
Not sure why it posted the same pic 3 times, sorry mods.

It looks really nice, but for a lake it has to much waterturbulances overall. The watereffect comes out great and would fit perfectly for a seashore, but for a lake a but to much waves imo.

Not true.

A windy day in spring and wet farmer's fields on the prairie will look exactly like this.

Looks great!

Did you paint or seal the bottom of the matt board to prevent warping?

Thanks for the positive replies!
Vcina- I cut out the shape and then painted the whole thing bluish, then white caulked the edges and let that dry. Then I painted the white caulked areas and finally added the clear silicone. It didn't warp at all. I recently made dirt roads with matte board. I white caulked the edges and then spread out thinned white glue for the sand on the road way. Once dried it warped only slightly but I can easily bend it back to shape. Matte board is an awesome hobby tool. I just recently discovered. I have also used it to make a base for my stone walls. I glued them on and added sand and Flock with no warping.
