6mm Caulk roads
« on: August 14, 2014, 08:14:48 AM »
Hi,

Been ages since I did anything (baby's fault!) but I finally was able to do something. I have been looking for a set of decent roads to be used with 6mm gaming, and have not found anything that I really liked. JR miniatures has some nice sets but they are expensive.

So, I googled around and read some tutorials about making roads from acrylic caulk. It seemed to be fun, easy and very cheap alternative so I decided to give it a go. I went and picked up some acrylic paste. I planned that my roads should be 5cm wide so the infantry stands and bigger vehicles fit well. Also I might use some flock, bushes etc. later on for the sides.

I made a road shaping "tool" out of 2mm plasticard. Then I laid down some wax paper and secured it with some small clamps, so that I could work the caulk without the paper moving.
I did some tests and with trials and errors I was able to do these:

some pics after putting the road pieces together

pics are taken under bad lighting... itīs too bright outside and too dark inside :). And... Ipad is not a good camera ;).  I will add some more colors to the roads and matt varnish them. Might also add some flock/ grass spots.. not sure yet.

I really like the roads and will be doing a lot more of them in different shapes and coloring. Also I will get some clear paste to make rivers.

ah one more pic, here you can see how flexible they are:

I think I will make my own tutorial about the process I used of making these. Maybe itīs of some help to others.

-M

I finished a few more pieces and laid them down to my terrain mat. Looks pretty nice. I need more variation though, like T-sections Y and + junctions.

The desert mat isn't the best combination but the purpose was only to see how they line up.

Next patch is on the table :)

yup that's the stuff :). It's also sold in different colors including brown. It was quite difficult to hunt down other than white colors though at least here in JKL. I made the ones in the picture from the white and first primed them with grey primer (from motonet, their own brand). Then used artist / GW / Vallejo paints.
