Hi All,

I am looking for information of the clothing under the armor worn by Samurai and Ashigaru during the Sengoku period. More specifically the patterns or printed materials worn for painting my miniatures. I know Ashigaru are lower class but did they also ware bright colours and detailed patterned materials/clothing like the Samurai?

If you have any examples/images of some of the patterns I can mimic with my painting that would be great.

Thanks

Haven't got any examples to hand but I can get you some in a couple of days.

Basically, the ashigaru undergarments would've been mainly subdued greys, browns, tans and blues with the occasional reddish tone thrown in.

Patterns would have been simple and repeating and usually bright or dark depending on the cloth colour.

Hope that makes sense, it will do when I dig my photos out  :)

cheers

James

There's a useful couple of pages in "Die Samurai der Sengoku-Zeit" part 2. in the 'Heere and Waffen' series.

There's some info on colours and clothing, but alas not patterns, on Anthony Bryant's old site:

Try using the rough shape of clan mons, use google image search.

For samurai it could have been much more extravagant, with flowers and other patterns but some would have also been plain again try google image search with words like traditional Japanese fabric designs, look at Edo prints,
It won't be long before you get the idea, also use what suits the figure.

As James noted, Ashigaru wore a range of muted colours, I usually use - grey, blue grey, off whites/light grey, tan, buff or similar. I have based these choices on screens and similar artwork from the period.

For convenience I paint the entire unit with the same colour scheme, chances are there would be a bit of variation due to fading but not enough for those of us painting armies to really worry about!
Kind regards
