10mm Dragon Rampant - Chaos v Dark Elves
« on: February 06, 2016, 05:40:14 PM »
I played a game of Dragon Rampant using my old Warmaster armies.

Plenty of (slightly dark) pictures and words here

Cool, always good to see Warmaster armies - especially when they get an outing for some other rules.

It feels appropriate that the armies of evil should be fighting in the half-light ;)

Hadn't thought of that!

Nice, I had thought about using my Warmaster armies for Dragon Rampant and will definitely have to give it a try as a change from 25/28mm.  I think I might use fewer stands, probably try two, for 6 strength point units and remove a stand at 3 hits.

Any reason to get Warmaster stuff on the table is a good one.
So many games, so little time.

I did think about smaller units, but I thought they'd be lost on the table. Two stands is only 40mm square, so on a 1m square battlefield that's not a lot of footprint.
This gave the feel of a small "battle" rather than a skirmish I though.
However that's the beauty of DR you can make it whatever size.

A bit of threadomancy...

Played a bit of Dragon Rampant over Christmas with my WM figures. I went a bit bigger and went with 6 stands per unit. Removing 1 stand from cavalry for a wound, and marking the first wound on infantry before removing a stand.

I found I was generally leaving the stands pretty close together, to allow units to manoeuvre and to keep LoS for shooting. But in some situations I would shuffle the stands into a random formation.

One thing I kept forgetting, probably partially due to the ranked nature of the troops, was that units had 360º LoS.

It seemed to work fine - gave the feel of a small battle from the number of troops deployed. But did act rather more like a skirmish from some of the mechanisms.

I think it depends on the space you have to game - if you want to play on a smaller area then fewer stands enable that, if you have the space and figures then you can go for bigger units.

Funnily enough I was thinking only the other day about getting the Warmaster models out for another game of DR. I think I went with three as mine are grouped that way for Warmaster with distinct paintjobs but I can see how six would work.

TBH, what I really want to do is play Warmaster again, but that seems unlikely any time soon  :'(

Distinct paint schemes for each unit, certainly makes things simpler (both for DR and WM).

Its a shame you can't find anyone up for WM gaming anymore, especially around Nottingham. There is still activity of the Specialist Games forum.

My group have moved on from the WM rules, but are still very much tied to our WM (and other 10mm) figures, and now use a set of home brew rules for big battles.
