Those guys are looking so good!
What do you use for snow effect? Looks very good on the bases!
Also how do you do capes/beards? I'm very much liking the fuzzy look of those!
Hope you don't mind me asking, I'm making a Frostgrave warband at the moment and your mminiatures inspire me! Would love to do something half as cool base- and beard-wise
Hello!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm always happy to inspire others as I too have and continue to be inspired by my fellow hobbyists, it's why I love this community! That after 28 years of collecting and painting there's always something new to try!!
So, for the Snow, I highly recommend PRECISION ICE AND SNOW, I buy mine online from a great store called Scenery Workshop based in Holland:

Please also attach the snow with HAIRSPRAY! Seriously it works wonders, it dries instantly and you can then re spray to add depth and layers. I firstly used PVA and it dissolved the snow and left behind a nasty green puddle of gunge.......

For the bases, I first glue (with PVA) fine sand, then I attach some small stones that I find on the streets or at the park. Then coat the sand in a dark brown, then dry brush on a khaki/cream colour and then finally I highlight with a light dry brush of Vallejo Game Colour Grey Blue which gives a nice soft cold look, then I attach with PVA some model leaves (
http://www.sceneryworkshop.nl/model-leaves-neutraal-3g-cp-mb-neutral.html) once it's all completely dry, get out your Hairspray and Snow and have some fun

For the Cloaks/Beards I use Green Stuff (GW or Army Painter works fine) and mix it with a small portion of FIMO, about a 1:4 ratio of GS:FIMO. The FIMO gives it more flexibility and its softer in the hand.
For the Cloak mix up an amount the size of large pea, then flatten into a rectangle the desired length, then take a sculpting tool, preferably one with a blunt knifes head and then rapidly poke the green stuff so its full of small dimples, do NOT punch through the mixture. Then drag each dimple up/down/left/Right until you start to form the look of fur and then sculpt/smoothen into the desired finished look, then apply to your model and shape it to fit the contours and pose, leave it to dry for 24 hours. Make sure that the surface you work on is clean and flat and damp, this will ensure the GS doesn't stick to it! Do not overload with water otherwise the GS will slide all over the place and that's no fun for sculpting

Also, make sure your sculpting tool is wet for the same reason. If you make a mistake use a flat tool and wet it then smooth out the area and start again.
For the Beards, roll out a small sausage the length of your small finger nail then with a damp tool lift it and gently stick it to the models chin. Now use a damp tool that is flat and spread the GS up the cheeks and under the chin, the tricky part is the moustache area, but with the blunt knife edge tool you slowly drag a small piece of GS up and over the mouth from both sides. Once the shape is roughly set, draw small lines in the GS using quick flicking motions with your hand and keep going over the beard until it looks like strands of hair.
Hope that helps?
Cheers
Gary
