A typical woman's clothing in the Soviet army - dress and tunic with a skirt.

Hi cuprum,

Do you have any information about the uniform worn by the young Russian woman in the middle? The dress and skirt look quite different from the typical Russian women's uniform as on the woman to the right. Maybe the woman in the middle is a medical officer or an interpreter? And why she wears civilian-type shoes instead of boots? Thank you.

In 1936, for the military women in the Red Army been introduced a special form of clothing.

In summer uniform was supposed to be: beret khaki or dark blue, khaki tunic, skirt dark blue, black stockings (wearing optional), black boots or shoes.
Also permitted to wear: cape-coat army type, the skin black coat or jacket, a white tunic and a white beret (wearing out of order).
Beret was allowed to replace other army hats.

August 3, 1941 introduced uniform for of military women with non-combatant command staff positions. The outfit consisted of a khaki beret, coats and women's dress khaki.

In wartime, women's skirt were made of khaki material. In wartime, women's skirt - were made of khaki material. During the war, women's uniform is not enough, and women were allowed be customized on a figure usual male uniforms.

Women were allowed to have off duty boots an arbitrary sample, but the prescribed color (black).

In 1943 buttonholes on the collar, which housed the badges of rank have been replaced by traditional Russian shoulder straps.

Here the caption I found for this photo
Czechoslovakia, 1945: A lieutenant belonging to the US 26th Infantry Division strikes a conversation with two Soviet female medical officers. The encounter was obviously pleasant. Note the lady on the left wearing a pair of snazzy dress shoes as opposed to her comrade sporting the regular issue boots. An onlooker in the background appears happy with the fraternization.

Hi cuprum,

Thank you for the further information about women's uniforms. I googled and found some more photos of women's uniform for non-combat role women. This dress looks a lot nicer on women than the men's uniform :)

One more question, could you id the rank of the young woman in the middle of the photo? It looks like a Lieutenant (two stars) but the insignia also looks like some letters? Could a woman with non-combat role be given a officer rank?

To Truscott Trotter,

Thank you for the finding the caption.

In the Red/Soviet Army during the Second World War were not letters on the shoulder straps. There could be located only signs of rank - for privates and sergeants - transverse stripes, the officers - a combination of stars and longitudinal strips. In addition, there might is located the emblem kinds of troops. In non-combatant military straps were narrower, about a third.

In the photo, as far as I can tell, the two women have the rank of Lieutenant (two small stars and one stripe on the center shoulder strap).

Of course a woman - non-combatant could have a officer rank. Non-combatant positions were women - doctors, lawyers, administrative personnel of staffs.
