However do the buttes along one edge as a backdrop. The rest can be rocky outcrops, ledges,  dried up river beds etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions and helpful advice. 

I am going to try making some buttes and see how they turn out.  If I am successful then I will head that way and set the game in the John Ford and Holywood setting. If not I can always revert back to the more traditional prairie setting.

I ill post some progress shots here as I go.
