Need stone age rules
« on: 24 March 2016, 10:53:41 PM »
Ordered some savage core models and I'm looking for a good set of rules for them. I want to be able to run a campaign in which multiple tribes are competing for territory and resources. Combat between groups up to 10 models max. Animal hunts as well would be good. Also if possible, character progression would be cool.

Without hesitation I would go for the Prehistoric Settlement set of rules from Steve Barber http://www.stevebarbermodels.com/books/423-prehistoricsettlementrulebook.html

Not cheap but a great campaign system.

Andrew, if you happen to see this, could you tell me if Prehistoric Settlement has a recommended table size? I've been intrigued by these rules for years...

Thank you,

Daryl

The description looks promising. Will give them a try. Still open to other suggestions.

This probably isn't very helpful, but Two Hour Wargames used to have some prehistoric rules, though they don't seem to be available any more. They covered pretty much all you are asking for: terrain generators, small numbers, resources, character progression, etc., with the added bonus of being great for solo play. You might contact Ed to see if he has spare copies lying around (or maybe he's working on a new edition?). If you're really intrigued I have a mint copy I could let you have for a pittance.

I think you should test Open Combat

The THW about prehistoric encounters has been reedited under the tittle: Mission st Mary, it is with a pulp flavour, but you can use the rules with the only cavemen thematic.
The book is here http://www.twohourwargames.com/missionstmary.html

I'll ask him and see what he has to offer. I have looked at some of their rules which might work for the combat aspect. If you where to part with your copy how much would you be thinking of?

I think you should test Open Combat
I looks like it will give me good customization for the groups but I cant tell if there is a campaign element or animals. If you have played it can you elaborate?

There's also Caveman! by Howard Whitehouse:
I looked at this one previously but I'm concerned by the description. It appears to be a bit silly. Can you verify?

I haven't seen them for a while but what about Tusk?
TUSK looks like it could really cover the animal combat well and I my incorporate it into some house rules if I go that route. I would really like to see first if there is an existing rules set that is all encompassing for what I'm looking for.

Will give them a look. Thank you

In Open Combat you have to do a lot Alone. But in the forum of the company you can ask and get good help. So, it is great.
An alternative is pulp alley.

Racm, all of Howard Whitehouse's rules have large amounts of silliness in them, so if that's not what you like they wouldn't be for you. It's funny you mention the THW rules might be good for combat; they would, of course, but the area where they really excel is their campaign system. If Ed doesn't have anything for you, you can have mine for postage and whatever you think is fair. PM me if interested and we can work something out. Good luck in your search!
