Ostfront '49
« on: 17 April 2016, 10:52:34 PM »
After lurking for many years, decided time to start posting and take the jumble of half-finished germans, soviets, bits of terrain, conversions and other ideas and turn then into something playable / finished. The overall aim is a 4' x 4' table with decent terrain and 3 small german, soviet and british forces. I've not actually played a game in 20 years so this thread will (hopefully) focus more on painting / converting / collecting.

First up are a SOTR German Squad and Command. These still need to be varnished (suggestions welcome for a mat varnish) and I see the top of the Lt. gun has gone missing which needs fixing.

Next on the list is rebasing some soviets

Very nice! Both Windsor & Newton & Tamiya (rattlecans) are good & Vallejo has always worked for me.

The camo is very reminiscent of pea dot camo, models look great!

OMG!  That is an excellent camo scheme and I really like the colour of the gas masks - I may have to steal that for my minis!   :D

Are you going to stick with SOTR or do some DUST minis as well?

The miniatures look great, as for varnish I use Ronseal Matte for the initial layer then go over it with anti-shine varnish.

Thanks for the kind words & suggestions all

The pea dot camp is based on these lovely Late War SS from Tom Weiss  :-*

@Harwood Hobbies
Have some dust in the mix - 6 steel guard for my Russians as well as a US walker. Not really a fan of the DUST infantry but maybe some special characters? Have some Viridian snipers (WIP below) and plan is a bit of mix and match across ranges including 1:48 scale - whatever works really. Hopefully some scratch built vehicles too.

Not a great photo - WIP Russian snipers

Thanks for the kind words, motivating!

The Russians are going slow - rebasing about 18 of them. Lots of additional highlights & tidy up needed so hard to get motivated to finish them off. However I did get the female sniper done.

Feeling a bit bored I started on my British Indian / Sikh Army - test mini below (with Westwind SOTR Para body and Meridian Miniatures head). Cant recommend the heads enough - lovely sculpts and v crisp casting.

A bit dark maybe but the main thing is I want it to fit within the overall tone of the other armies while including blue palette. The plan is for a small army with 1 rifle squad, command, mounted lancers (engineers with mad max style explosives on sticks) and a big blue four-armed Mech.

Onwards!

Light Mech for my Russians which has been a real joy to paint and got me back on track after a few quiet months. It is a bit factory fresh but may add some markings / peeled paint / battle damage in time). I have 6 of these in total (3 regular steel guard and 3 command) and would definitely get more if Dust had it's act together. Not sure whether to go 2 squads of 3 (which fits in SOTR rules) or a squad of 5 with the last one converted into some kind of hero?

Other housekeeping bits like undercoating all the Indians & rebasing some squads. Plus getting distracted by new armies...

Loving the light mech!  I'll have to get some of those.   :D

Definitely factory fresh - I'd love to see it with some decals and battle damage weathering, to give it some personality.   :)

Some very nice miniatures - that's a very cool green you've managed there with the dead leaves on the base.

Nice work on the mechs, the lenses/lights are particularly good.
