I like Kings of War, and I will most likely give the historical edition a go, but I somehow want to know if I get more than a KoW with 20 new armies that aren't allowed any giants and unicorns! ;--)

Well you get skirmishing units which is not something available in normal KoW. IIRC there are also tweaks to hills.

By and large it is KoW but in the absence (in the main) of the fantasy elements there was scope for a few small tweaks.
