After watching a few episodes of the original Star Trek with my 9 year old son I thought it might be fun to play some Star Trek lite games with my son. I made the terrain, but the miniatures were painted by Calimero. I used the Away team rules for combat.

Here is the board. I thought I would go with a standard arid desert planet with a red sky. The crew is exploring an unknown planet looking for Deterium crystals to help power their warpdrive. The red dots represent hostiles or crystal deposits.

After explaining the roles of the characters, my son was quick to let the red shirt (security) do all the initial exploration with Spock handling the scanning.

the first blip is a cluster of eggs as well as a facehugger. My son had not seen Alien, so was grossed out as I went into great detail. Spock was able to make some careful observations before the facehugger before it went in for a kiss.

the second blip was deterium, but the third was a nasty bunch of aliens. My son made a quick retreat and started blasting away.

More aliens joined the battle. Captain Kirk was karate chopping aliens left and right but the red shirt fell quickly.
Eventually McCoy and Spock were able to blast away as well but Spock was injured at the very end.

The Away Team returned with 2 Deterium deposits and 2 injured crewman. The team may add an extra crewman in the next adventure as well as one weapon upgrade, Spock will have to sit out in the next mission and the red shirt died of his injuries.
This was a fun game, although trying to explain the transporter to my son seemed difficult. I was surprised by how smart a lot of his decisions were. It was fun to add in the suspense (red blips) and describe the horrible aliens in detail.
