Little marvels of steam

I went to a little steam engine meeting at the beginning of January. It took place in our little local automobile and toy museum. Unfortunately, there weren't much steam engines (there was much snow...). Anyway I thought I'd like to share some pics as it might be interesting to see how some steam engines for ships looked like.


This was a fairly huge one, but this guy built everything (down to the last screw...) by himself, very impressive.


These are some steam engines for ships, sorry for the bad light. The brass and wood looked beautiful.


This was one of my favourites - a steam launch.


This was my own humble attempt. A steam tractor, about to lift off.

I went to a local railway model fair just before Christmas, and they had tons of this sort of stuff. One guy even had a working mine cage set up with a great big pit wheel and everything. Absolutely lovely.

There's just something, I dunno, manly about all that brass and wood and steam.

"Can't talk now, dearest, I'm off to the shed to smoke a pipe, drink very strong tea and ponder the intricacies of the steam turbine. Carry on!"

Quite right!

I love steam-powered engines, especially on locomotives. It's the sound and smell of the engine, the sight of all that lovely steam billowing out of the smokestack or maybe just the chance of getting a red-hot cinder in the eye when looking out of the carriage window 

It's definitely one of the main reasons I love VSF so much

There is something fascinating about it all though. There are some "steampunk" aficionados around the internet who have made some interesting steam-powered gadgets... like a motorcycle!

I haven't build this tractor myself. It was actually an X-mas present 30 years ago! I merely customized it myself for running it up and down the street via cable-remote control.
However, to add some armour plates in a Fowler style, and ...
