Vehicles?

What models for suitable vehicles have people used for their pulp games?

I'm not sure of the whole 1/48 scale thing that Sloppy Jalopy have gone for, and sort of favour the 1/56 approach that seems to be in the process of adoption in the 28mm WW2 world - I'm going to aim for something that falls between 1/50 and 1/56.

With that aim I'm lurking on eBay scouting for likely suspects: my first target is a Lledo Days Gone Ford Model A. From my calculations it should be 1/53 which ought to be perfect...

So what have you found that works? And if you have pictures post 'em please.

My gangsters use a 1:43rd scale Solido car to ride in style:

However, I´m of the "bigger is better" ilk when it comes to dedicated skirmish gaming, so I certainly prefer 1:48th and, at a pinch, 1:43rd.

Sadly, not available at the moment. Great sculpting from Mr. Murch, though.

I notice that nobody has based their vehicles.

Is this a scale reason or a rules reason?

I only base vehicles if one or more of the following apply:

a) the vehicle is very small and would look strange next to figures

b) the vehicle would be unstable without a base or has parts (ie wheels) that might come off

c) I want the vehicle to fulfil a very specific role that is visually aided by a scenic base.

To explain:

1.My "Road-to-Stalingrad" German Army will include several motorcycles in a scout role. The models will topple unless based (b)

2. My SCW collection now includes a BA-6, an FT-17 and a Panzer I. All are made from Cardboard, thus inherently unstable, and (in 1:56th scale) small, so I based them on old telephone cards I had lying around, using the bases to blend the dark vehicles (green and dark grey) with the lighter (khaki) Interbrigadists (a, b and c)

3. I´m currently restoring a damaged Maultier which will be used for the Wolfenfels game. This will require a base since the running gear is pretty fu**ed up and won´t be stable unless pinned or based. The areas are to small for pinning, therefore I base. And I´ll be able to add some track marks into the dirt base which will add to the looks (b and c).

For me this is a matter of scale appearance. I'm using Sloppy Jalopy, and Copplestone with figures on GW bases.

I don't know why but I think vehicles look silly on bases. I'll only do it if I have to. I had some 20mm German WWII bus and even after hours of trying I couldn't get all four wheels to sit at the same level. This meant the damn thing wobbled all the time on the table.

So I put it on a base to make it behave. That's probably the only circumstances in which I would base a vehicle. Except, thinking about it, I do have some 20mm resin vehicles with integral bases. I left those on as it would be a pain to try and remove the base. Anything for a quiet life, me.
