Starting 28mm ACW - New CSA Regt Added
« on: December 18, 2016, 09:29:19 AM »
I just sold off my 15mm Union and CSA ACW forces because I never used them. They were lovely figures (AB & OG mix) but they seemed destined to spend their lives living in a box. So I sold them to someone who would use them.

I got a copy of Sharpe Practice and this seemed like a good way of getting some ACW action happening with minimal painting needed (and I would just paint up one side).

Then came Pickett's Charge and I thought, "Hmm... I like this." More painting but still I'm only doing one side.

So I got some Perry plastics and painted up a regiment. I then found out (yesterday) that we prospective players were all doing Union troops. So I decided right there to do CSA.

So here is my first Federal regiment.  :?

Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Interesting regiment. This is how the historic regiment ?? The officer has no shoulder straps (it is difficult to determine the rank)

These are nicely painted.  But to help you, infantry officers wore crimson sashes, sergeants had red ones, they did not have red edging or cuffs in this uniform and he should have shoulder straps, as worn by US officers to this day, later in the war some officers just wore the bars, etc and left off strap to be less of a target. As a general rule of thumb, facings for infantry were light blue, cavalry yellow and artillery red.

For some of the best painting info look up Don Troiani's work.  https://www.facebook.com/Don-Troiani-Historical-Artist-104952196246190/?fref=ts

As a period, the Perry ACW range is pretty complete in plastic, needing only generals and dismounted cavalry for a really great army, so a good choice.

I sold all my ACW 15mm sometime ago to focus solely on 28mm. To be fair though 15mm is the optimum scale if you like to base your games on actual battles.

The Perrys figures have much tempted me since, particularly their Western Theatre Union.

Nice brushwork. I'm painting my way through a couple boxes of those same Perry plastics. Yours look better than mine, particularly the sergeant's stripes, the coat highlights and the facial features. Hi-ho, I've been in this hobby a long time and still have so much to learn.

I'd say the experts have about picked all your nits for you. When I get those kind of comments, I just smile and say, "Well, this regiment is fresh from their Camp of Instruction, and some of them are still wearing their state-issue uniforms."

I used the same tan color you did for the blankets and socks. Then I learned that these items were grey as issued, and the cheap logwood dyes often faded to a butternut shade of tan. Hi-ho, still so much to learn. Sometimes I repaint when I learn more, but not these blanket rolls. Third level of expertise is that Federal troops would usually put their rubberized shelter half on the outside of the blanket roll, and that was greyish-black. But a black roll on a dark blue coat lacks contrast and isn't as visually attractive.

Confederate uniform and field equipment is a much more complicated subject than Federal issue. Tyros think Confederates are easy because anything goes. The experts will learn you different. I believe it's better to light a candle then to curse the darkness (Darn you, darkness! Darn you to Heck!), so here are some links to third-level Confederate uniform expertise. And Don Troian's paintings are very well researched:

Better to point out these types of things now than wait until he has painted a whole army.....

So, as Christmas comes to a close I managed to get my first 28mm CSA Regiment off the painting table. They took me a bit longer to finish due to festive seasonal commitments but here they are. A couple more pics over on my blog @:

Lovely painting and tones.

Also, no need to reupload the image.

View an image in your blog (right mouse click over an image and select "Open Link in New Tab"), to get an image by itself, i.e.:
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qExtpjMESp4/WGBmLNliXsI/AAAAAAAAB1g/ZckAqbaYoH4gMyiVqqorE7Vv-sgmeR_iQCLcB/s1600/CSA_28_1a.jpg

Copy and paste into your LAF reply window, hightlight the image's URL with the "Insert Image" tag (or you can also manually add "[ img ]" to the beginning and "[ /img ]" (no space between the square brackets and the code) to the end if you want).

Will then include the image in your text part of your reply (and not at the end like an email attachement), like so:

It's a lot faster IMHO, the attachment method is great if the image isn't hosted anywhere online yet.

Cheers

I just right-click on picture directly in my blog post and chose 'copy URL of picture' (or whatever it says in English), insert the img-tags in LAF post (before or after copying URL), then insert the URL between the tags.  :)
