28mm Small Warehouse *completed!*
« on: 07 February 2017, 10:05:22 PM »
Cheers everyone!

I'm sharing here today (after the Checkpoint Post, which is being bought by Spectre Miniatures) what i believed it was a dead project but that with some new vigor (that was shamelessy stealed from the BSC that i neglected, alas) i decided to complete.

The structure is created as a filled negative foamcore box, as a few other of my latest works:

The resulting cast was then worked to achieve this time a plastered brick wall effect.

The original structure was a bit of an experiment, and didn't have a clear direction when it was built. Now, i'm repurposing it as a small storage facility, pretty useful for a large number of settings.

The roofing, in particular, was done following my own technique explained in a tutorial on my site (see Part 1, for now, part 2 is being fixed and reuploaded in these days).
Now, i can see a good number of things to add or tweak before considering it a serious build, but i can feel that the direction is now the right one.

That's all, for now! really looking to hear from you LAFers!
Any suggestion, comment or critics is strongly welcome!

Cheers,
Jack

Thank you!
I edited the thread title to clarify: that's a 28mm sculpt! Although i could shamelessy suggest you a good alternative sculpted by me for 15mm, already on the WDM store!.

This one is in 28, with all the complications. I fear that anything bigger than this won't find a buyer, since the casting process becomes expensive. :( Each scale has its drawbacks, i suppose! :)

cheers,
Jack

Thank you! :) I still have to decide whether to fill more the insides or not. What would you see this building for? A storage space? barracks?

The brick wall effect is very nice!

You say you "worked" it to achieve it.  May I ask how you did it?

It looks extremely good - and I'm very impressed that you managed to cast an carve the walls without them breaking... I never had much luck with plaster and thus stopped using it many years ago. Seeing your work here has made me wonder if I should have another go though! :)

Edit: I think it would make a good workshop or small garage personally. A modest one-person business if you know the sort of place I mean?

I think he carved it once it was fully cured, in order to add the bricks, the bullet holes, chips, and other details. :)

Thanks poco! :) Yeah, i've got quite a list of things to do before salute, i'd like to finish this one as well! :)

Pretty much as Major said, once you have the structure it's just a matter of weathering. I use 2-3 tools to carve, but nothing crazy...

I rarely break plaster honestly: it's just a matter of not pressing too much, and finding a hard one (otherwise instead of cracks you'll have dents, much less realistic).

A small laboratory... could work! :)

So looking at my new Vac chamber, I would say that I could probably do taller than this but maybe not that much bigger in terms of footprint - if that's any help.

Obviously more established guys will probably have bigger than 12L Vac chambers . . . . .

Probably a common limit, i'd say!
Thanks for the insights! :)

meanwhile, the work proceeded: the roof structure is completed, and i added the ladders (there's one also between the two internal rooms). A few tweaks here and there to do, basically all the detailing work of all the metal structures.

I kinda see the light at the end of the tunnel, it's becoming a sweet little house!

C&C welcome, and suggestions for future buildings as well! :)

Cheers
Jack

Hmm, are the double doors the right way round? Normally escape ironmongery like panic bars goes on the inside of the doors!  :P

What sort of plaster do you use?

I've just bought a cheapy tub of kids plaster of paris to see how that goes. :D

If I were you, I would think about how to break buildings down to walls that you can lock together in some way. Would mean it is more manageable to cast.
