What Color are these Forge Fathers?
« on: 12 February 2017, 09:57:57 PM »
Hi Guys,

I received my Kickstarter from Mantic and there are two sprues of Forge Fathers. I like the colors on the ones on the website and I would like to emulate it, but I can't seem to decide what the colors are (my wife says I'm "color challenged").

Is the armor brown? khaki? Green? Some other parts look orange-ish?

Here are the miniatures in question: http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/deadzone/getting-started-with-deadzone/product/forge-father-faction-starter-2nd-edition.html?Action=Cookie

Thank you for any insights you can provide!

Man I am the same way!  To my eyes the color almost looks like Field Grey like the Germans wore in WWII.  I use craft store paints, and there is a color caled "Neutral Grey" that I think would be perfect.  I forgdt the maker off hand though.

Looks much more like Khaki to me, than field grey, it seems to be a light brown shade. There are definitely some dark orange bits, the knee pads and shoulder pads.

Probably something like that, although the edge highlights on the khaki(?) are a mid-to light gray, possibly the aforementioned Neutral Gray.

Mantic use and sell the "Army Painter" range:

http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/painting-and-modelling/warpaints.html

Colours will be from amongst these. My guess (based on the colour tones on my monitor) would be Banshee Brown and Drake Tooth.

I asked mantic this question a few months ago

And it turns out Nathaniel at mantic is awesome

-----

Hi Nate,

I have spoken to Dave the Painter our Blogger and such! Here is an in depth version on how to get the colours exactly right, these are straight from the person who painted them:

White undercoat
Basecoat of Rakarth Flesh mixed with a touch of Coat d'Arms Dark Earth
Army Painter Strongtone in the recesses
Fade shadows in with Charadon Granite
Highlight with neat Rakarth Flesh
Highlight with Space Wolf Grey/ Blue Horror / Coat d'Arms Lupine Grey (any will do)

Black is undercoated black
Highlight Ad Mech Grey
Second highlight Fortress Grey
Final highlight with Space Wolf Grey/ Blue Horror / Coat d'Arms Lupine Grey (any will do)

He also gave me a much simpler version that wont be exactly the same or as detailed but be much easier to do, the simpler version is:

Games Workshop paints:

Baneblade Brown
Wash with Nuln Oil
Reapply Baneblade Brown
Highlight with Karak Stone

Using Army Painter:

Monster Brown
Wash with Dark Tone
Reapply Monster Brown
Mix Ash Grey and Monster Brown and highlight with that.

I hope this helps, It was a nightmare getting all this right from him, there's so much detail! ;)

Kind regards,
Nathaniel

I went with a rakarth felsh, null oil wash, more rakarth flesh then bleached bone In The end

Glad you got it sorted out.  They look very sharply painted (my only dislike is the grey matching too well with the grey on the base - I think a different base would really make them stand out).  Looks good to go.
