Redoubt Victorian Unarmed Sailors
« on: March 03, 2009, 08:45:34 PM »
Finding sailors from the Victorian era has been pretty difficult, but at last I have found what I needed.

Following on the lead given by Malamute that Redoubt has unarmed seaman which are not available in the on-line shop, I used the Contact Form and requested the availability of figures.

Trevor from Redoubt responded and I ordered 10 sailors of his choosing as I didn't have a clue what he actually had.  The transaction was conducted using PayPal.

Of the ten I received, two were of the same type.  Here is a picture of the eight unique miniatures I received from Redoubt:

Note that all figures come without the head.  I asked for the flat Victorian hat, but I also received a couple kepi's, so they can be used for the ACW as well.  There is a nice variety of different faces with assorted beards, mustaches, etc.  In height they compare favorably with Copplestone.  Price: 1.05 GBP each.

Overall, very pleased with the figures.

BTW, does anybody know a manufacturer which makes suitable plank/ship bases to mount these on?

Those will work quite nicely.

Thanks Plynkes!

Also look at Black Cat bases - they do some nice metal deck bases with various nautical clutter cast on them. Also Jo at Black Cat is a member of LAF, so it might be worth contacting her and seen if she will sellect some more approporiate bases for your needs (i.e. without pirate cannonballs, wooden gunpowder barrels, etc)

Thank you so much for posting this picture.  I'm off to order.  Maybe we should discuss uniform colors before we get painted; afterall, we don't want to both show up at the prom wearing the same dress.   :)

I just had a quick look at the Black Cat website and could only find these plank bases:

http://www.blackcatbases.com/product.asp?strPageHistory=category&numSearchStartRecord=0&strParents=92&CAT_ID=92&P_ID=413&btnProduct=Products...

However, I have some other plank 'pirate ship deck' bases from Black Cat that have things like rope coils and beasties like crabs and terapins on them, Unfortunately i can't see them on the website.

Might be best to stick to plain plank bases for VSF.

Making those plank bases out of balsa is so easy it's probably not worth buying them. I would love to see these painted up when you get there :)

Interesting to see these Ray as I only have six of them. There are poses there that I don't have, some very useful ones too.  :)

I expect I shall have to order some more now, seeing as how I am also going to order a large naval gun from Redoubt for a Martello Tower game I am planning.(Those beastly Prussians are planning a raid against the British coastline...) ;)

Those beastly Prussians are planning a raid against the British coastline...

They must be repelled at all costs!

Actually, I was hoping to get the figure with the eyeglass, but since I didn't state any preferences...

And yep, I am thinking about making my own plank bases, especially because that would ensure the figures match my aeronef exactly.

In all probability I will paint them blue.  As for when that will occur... not sure given a certain spectacular on the forums which will be starting in April...    ;D

those redoubt minis are very lovely but very rarely seen!
thanks for the photo.

A small suggestion: Redoubt in their Victoriana range has a couple of officers and 2 strokers (is that the correct name) with shovels. These might add some more variety to your crew!

as for colour: Blue is a must! (even at the warm tropical weathers most sailors used to wear the blue ubiforms! see Sudan for example)

I think you mean Stokers, as in "to stoke a fire". A stroker has a very different job  :D
