For my summer project I decided to make a proper SAGA army. I've got my Game of Thrones minis, but I thought I might as well have a somewhat historical force. I've seen the occasional picture of people taking Perry's Mahdist Ansar and making them into dark age irish, and thought "I can do that!".
So, from no real research, the key compontents of dark age irish are:
1) Bare feet
2) Knee length tunics
3) Possibly trousers
With that in mind, I identified plastic kits to use and settled on a box of Mahdist Ansar, a small set of 12 Victrix Balearic Slingers and a heavy sprinkling of bits from Warlord Games Celtic Warriors. I've ended up also using bits and pieces from Frostgrave, Gripping Beast and Conquest Games. Looking over the irish battleboard and rules, I settled on a simple list to begin with:
1 Warlord with Javelins
2 Curaidh (heroes) with Javelins
24 Warriors with Javelins
24 Levy with Slings
51 models to convert all told. It's taken me about three weeks of work to get to this stage, where I can show you all the converted models (all the Warriors with javelins will get shields after painting):
First of, for the Warlord I decided to go metal. A female barbaian from Oathsworn minis:
Levy made from Victrix bodies with a variety of heads:
Also made two warriors from those bodies:
I really like the dynamic bodies of warlord celts. Inaccurate as they are, they feel close enough for me. Slingers have had sling hands swapped on from Victrix or Gripping Beast kits:
You can probably tell I like the ducking forward bodies. Here's a closer look:
And then the main part of the builds, Ansar bodies. Heads from all sorts of kits, slings and sling arms from Victrix and GB added on.

Also made two Warriors from Conquest archers. These are a bit more generically medieval, but variety is nice, don't you think?
The Curaidh were made by taking GB saxon thegn bodies and cutting off their legs to add Ansar legs. Also added arms from the ansar kit, and did some greenstuffing.
And that's that. Here they are, all lined up ready for priming:
In the end, I'm really pleased with these builds. There are a number of inaccuracies, namely far too many kilts, some tunics really should be longer and there should probably be more cloaks but no big deal for me. What do you think?

Great stuff, excellent use of the different plastics available making a unique one off Army 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Great piece of work to convert all these figures.
They have that Irish vibe to them, even if made from a variety of sources.
Looking forward to seeing them with some paint on.

Brill conversions 8)

Lovely job :D It will be cool to see them all painted up.

I agree :)

Admirable project! I embarked on a similar one: kit bashed dark ages Irish a few years ago but gave up and bought some metal ones second hand. :'( I used Perry Ansar bodies (sometimes just the legs) as well Victrix Carthaginian Citizen warriors. The problem with the latter is the sculpted on swords.

Thanks for the positive comments everyone!

Oh yeah, I looked at those. I think I gave them a miss because as you say, the style of the swords and belts over the shoulder. I've cut of some very ancient looking daggers from the Warlord plastics and replaced them with more dark age looking bits from GB and Conquest frames though, so it can be done.
-
Great project. If you want more flowing cloaks, you can support the greenstuff layer with some balls of bluetack. After it sets they are easy to remove.

That's a great tip, thank you!

Great looking set of conversions to get a unique army. I love how dynamic you have made them. Looking forward to seeing these painted up.

Really nice conversions. That will be a lovely look band when finished

Great conversions!
This will be a wonderful and original army to use.
Looking forward to the colouring-in part.

Excellent work! I think you've really captured the feel with these kitbashes, despite the disparate sources for the parts.
Really like the Ansar bodies in particular, I'll have to keep those in mind for future Dark Ages conversions. I used the Victrix Carthaginians for some Scots warriors, but wouldn't mind some variety if I did an Irish or Welsh warband...
-
Still haven't figured out how to take group photos that don't suck, but what can you do? The army is painted, and I've played one game with them.

Thank you! It's an unusual project for me, to complete essentially a whole army in one go like this, but I'm really happy with the end result.
-
Fantastic work! I made celtic skirmishers with the perry sudanese as well! Mine are not half as nice as yours though!
-
The end result is excellent! Great paint jobs, the warband really looks the part.

Thank you both! I need to get a few shots of the whole army lines up as well.

If you look at the levy with slings, there's plenty of space for men of a certain age and experience :D They get to muddle about the back end of the battlefield and complain about kids these days. Belt and trousers optional.

I presume that the really nice shield designs are transfers.
If yes, who sells them?
If no, flipping heck, well done!

Little Big Men studios. Strongly recommend them, really nice to work with.

It's alive! I'll use this thread for my Dark Age and Medieval Stuff. This particular post is a little corner case, as it is a Frostgrave warband but the idea is to grow it into a SAGA Viking/Norse Gael force.
I got the new Victrix vikings earlier this summer, and I finally finished the first bunch of models. The archers are Conquest Medieval Archers, and the Wizard is a Frostgrave plastic model. Transfers from Little Big Men Studios.

Saw these on Facebook. I must say this is an outstanding advert for Victrix - they should use your work on their page. Making me very tempted to get some myself, although I hardly need them - got 48 of the old plastic Gripping Beast vikings, who look outstandingly dated next to these!
-
Wow, that is high praise! Thank you!
They are very nice models, so much better than GB's offerings. A good solid kit as well, with lots of heads and all sorts of nice bits.
-
Just a small update, but I finished the first of three Fogou Models beehive huts. Really love these, great quality casts.
Added a little bit of detailing with some bits from Mantic and I believe Steve Barber.

Little Saturday morning hobbying. I've been thinking a while that the Curaidh models are the weakest of my Irish, and with the new Victrix I've been considering remaking them. I realized that I had a set of GW models with bare legs and feet so I did a bit of kitbashing and a little greenstuff. Heads from Warlord Games.

A thread of striking conversions and excellent paint jobs all in all! I really like the look of them and I am jealous of your ability with the greenstuff. I have never figured out how to work the stuff beyond filling in holes myself. Makes me all the more tempted to pick up a box of Victrix.
-
Thank you! Don't have too many tips for greenstuff other than practice. Sometimes it won't work out, but that's ok, especially when working with plastics.
-
A lot of great conversions in this thread! And nice showcase of the Victrix figs, definitely impressed with the quality there (and how you've used them too!) Keep up the good work!

And here they are, the lads! Keen to defend Ireland against all sorts of heathens.

Thank you guys! More to come for sure, playing a lot of SAGA at the moment.

Cracking conversions, just saw this thread now, now that I'm here though I marvel at the work you put into them! :D

Hey guys! A couple more vikings/norse gael painted. Mostly victrix with a few Perry ansar bodies mixed in for those barefoot Irish types. The shield maid is a Victrix celt kindly gifted by Koyote, I swapped her arms and added some more viking style knife and sword to her belt.

Thank you guys! I struggled a little with motivation on these, but a game of SAGA last week got me going again. Will try to get a few more with javelins done at least, and then we'll see how Wargames Atlantic's irish look in the flesh when they come out.

Lovely work.
Converting the Victrix Celtic warrior queen into a Viking shield maiden is a brilliant idea. I'm definitely going to do the same for my Pagan Rus.

Excellent work on the minis Ogrob and some very creative conversions, good job!
-
Thank you!
Been gaming a little more Age of Vikings SAGA these last few weeks, and that certainly helps with getting things painted. I promised to demo the game tomorrow, and came to the conclusion that I needed a few more javelin levy painted for Norse Gaels. Got these knocked out over the weekend, fairly quick paintjobs. Usual mix of Victrix, Perry, little bit of Warlord Celt and some Oathmark heads.

Hey guys, time to bring this topic back from the dead.
It took me ages to get WGAs Irish plastic because a package was lost. Once I contacted them about it they sent me a new one pronto and a couple of weeks ago I started working on them. I've incorporated a bunch of Victrix viking, saxon and gaul parts and even a few Perry zulu arms. The WGA models have a lot of moulded on left arms which limits posing but you can cut them of and grab some spare left arms from Victrix to make new poses.

These will make 24 Javelin armed warriors or levy for SAGA, functional for both Irish and Norse Gael factions.
What do you think?
-
Great to see you back in the groove, love the new additions - there are some particularly angry facial expressions there...especially like the guy second from right in the first photo... is that a WGA head?

I think it's a Victrix saxon.

Great work, yet again!

None too shabby, especially with the added parts from other manufacturers.
What’s your assessment of the WGA Irish figures?

Thank you! I'd say that they are a step above Gripping Beast, with better sculpts and better proportions. Still a good bit behind Victrix however, both in quality and sprue content. Some wonky poses with the integral left arms, and some limited options because bodies can only take bare arms and they are very limited in number. No clever hand swap solutions without cutting things yourself. Biggest issue for me is a lack of slings, there is only one sling per sprue of six bodies.

Ever had one of those projects that sit half-finished on your desk for ever and ever? Well, this was one of those. These guys have been half painted since a week or so after I posted the kitbashes. And then I just never finished them... until the other day. Nice to have that check of the to do list.
Added a few more conversions that I never photographed in the plastic.

Three irish warriors with dane axes (kitbashed WA irish with Victrix axes) and a hearthguard with dane axe:

The irishmen with javelins were divided into four groups of six, colour coded in the dark age irish scheme of yellow, grey, black and white. The white is really a tan and the black a dark gray, but I figure that's what natural dyes would look like.

One more little update on here. I've bought the Baron's War game from Footsore, and might be making some minis for that (but we probably do 100 year war instead, still like the look of the rules for that). As I was buying the book I took the opportunity to order some more Matt Bickley sculpts, some of the lovely late Saxons he has done for Footsore.
Here are the saxon archer pack and their Hereward the Wake hero miniature.

Perfect colour choices for the "period".
Lve your work sir! :-*
-
Thanks for the kind words fellas!
Finished the last Footsore saxon for now. Also did up another Warlord-base for him for SAGA. You really want big bases for your SAGA warlords, but I also like not having my minis locked into that base size, so I got these 50mm circles with 25mm cutouts from Warbases. Very handy I think.
Thoughts?
-
As long as the outer base of the sabot is nicely modelled, like yours I'm all for it. 8)
-
Brilliant!

A second update for today, as I also finished these V&V irish command and hearthguard. This is my first experience with V&V, and I am somewhat unimpressed. To begin with it took a solid six weeks and an email reminder for them to even send me any miniatures at all. Secondly, the minis are super fiddly (something I very rarely complain about), as each mini is 6+ pieces of somewhat soft resin. I even ended up having to replace all axe hafts with 1mm plastic rod. Design is very nice, material pretty bad and assembly really annoying. Don't get me started on the 100 year war pack I ordered and how sword, hand and handle are three separate bits.
Here is also a size comparison with a Victrix viking:
-
Wow! Those Irish look amazing mate! Your work paid off.
-
If you're in the UK, I highly recommend Mezzers Miniatures for V&V stuff. I ordered over the weekend and the package arrived on the Tuesday.
The minis are very fiddly though.

Alas, I am in Sweden. I've found that Stronghold Terrain in Germany have them as well for us EU residents, but to be honest I will probably stick to other manufacturers for the forseable future. If I am to get any more Dark Ages stuff right now, my first priority will be the remaining Matt Bickley-sculpted Saxons from Footsore, and beyond that probably Victrix's Normans.
-
Oof, sorry to hear you had such a rough experience there! I've heard the V&V figures are notoriously fragile as well, so good call on replacing the axe hafts. It's a shame really because the sculpts themselves are great
You've definitely made the best of a bad situation though, really nicely done with the painting, the cloth highlights especially are top notch!
-
Fantastic paintjob! :-*
I mostly order directly from V&V and it does in take around 4-6 weeks to arrive in Belgium.
I quite like the figures, but they do take time to assemble.
Keep up the fantastic work! I am looking forward to see you paint the other beautiful Footsore Saxons sculpted by Matthew Bickley and in the near future the Victrix Normans!
-
Looks good. I like to put a bannerman on the my base with the warlord, along with maybe a musician or favorite dog.
Mike Demana

-
Nice job on the warlord and archers.
The base insert is a good idea, but Warbases' decision to center the smaller base leaves too little room for other interesting bits -such a standard bearer, companion animal, or fallen foe.
Excellent work on the Irish axemen.
My only complaint about V&V is that the detail is closer to true scale than what you see in many minis. As a result, it's a bit too fine for my taste. I prefer details (chainmail links, belts, satchels, pouches, buckles, sheathed knives, etc) that are a bit exaggerated in size. The larger bits are easier to paint and show up better at a distance. Overall, I think Victrix does a better job than V&V of balancing realistic looking proportions against the need to paint and display minis.
With that said, I own dozens of V&V minis -most of which are going to find their way into my Pagan Rus warband.
-
Thanks for the comments everyone!
In regard to banners with warlords, I agree that it looks quite nice but I struggled with transporting these big bases with banner poles sticking out. The lower large base is less visually interesting, but it looks good enough and is so much easier to transport.

Use rare earth magnets to hold the bannerman's arm to the torso. This will allow you remove the banner and arm for separate storage while transporting models.

Well, been a while, but I finally got to play a game of SAGA! We played Age of Vikings and just the basic Clash of Warlords from the book. I played Norse Gaels versus my opponents Vikings.
First time trying the Gall Gaedhil mercenaries, and they sure add a good punch to this force. I ended up winning a fairly decisive victory, leaving only my opponents Warlord on the table by the end of turn five.
No game shots I'm afraid, just my army line up. Used a combination of my Irish and Viking models.
-
That's a handsome warband.
I had hoped to use Gall Gaedhil with my Irish at Adepticon in March, but it looks like mercs will be disallowed. :(
I've never used the Norse Gael board. How is it?
-
Shame your experience with V&V was sub-par. I have a couple of their figures, and while I did have to add a brass pole for the banner man, the sculps were excellent, and I've often considered future purchases from them.
Resin is a bit hit and miss though. In general I am not a huge fan, but you can work with it.
That said, your warband is excellent.
-

It's fairly one sided, with no defensive abilities at all. They do have some neat tricks, like shunting fatigue over to levy, allowing you some solid threat range on your fighting units.
Maniac: The sculpts are great indeed! I was mostly frustrated with the assembly process, but with the benefit of some time, I may consider getting more of their minis as they are very good looking.
-
Glad to see this thread back! Looks like you had a good time. Love that warband.

Oof, yeah, it has been a minute since I did anything in that style. I think it is a base of Scale75 Black Forest Green followed by drybrushes of S75 Sherwood Green and either S75 Autumn green or possibly P3 Thrall Flesh. The tufts are either Army Painted or Gamer's Grass, I just used any lush green tufts I had lying around, trying to get some variation of greens.
-
I might need to grab one of those oathsworn barbarians...with the shield swap she looks like she'd work well as a character for one of my projects.

Just plain black there. I usually do my edges black, unless the minis are going in a movement tray.

Just a small update to this thread. Earlier this winter I forgot how much I disliked assembling V&V miniatures and ordered a few more sets through Stronghold Terrain.
I've gotten around to painting up two sets of Irish Slingers. Sculpts are nice as usual with V&V, but the I found the faces a bit plain. Paintjobs are fairly quick and dirty, but should do just fine on the table.
-
They look mighty fine to me.
-
Small update here as well today. Hoping to do some more Viking age stuff alongside my Rohan project this summer, including fleshing out some of the mercenary options from Saga Age of vikings. To that end I have put together this small unit of Shieldmaidens. Models are Stronghold terrain with a Hasslefree leader.

I have those miniatures but they are cast in resin by Brother Vinni.
http://www.brother-vinni.com/shop.htm#!/Spear-Ladies/p/116507099/category=14147797
Are they licensed copies?
-
@DavidJ, no idea but I imagine so.
Heres how they turned out anyway. Not my best photography, might try to get a better shot at some point.
-
Gorgeous! I love the color choices!
-
I have around 30 Brother Vinni's miniatures (I doubled up on one order) and some more in the post. They are very well sculpted and, being resin, are quite easy to convert or improve with Victrix leftovers.
Mine don't look quite as good as yours ... but I'm happy with them :)
As MaleGriffin said, your colour choices are great.
The Hasslefree figure turned out very well, that's one I don't have!
-
Well, it's been a few months so time to revive this thread I guess.
I at some point recently grabbed the last pack of V&V irish slingers, some nice old geezers to complement the young lads above. While painting these I also went ahead and painted the four slingers I got as part of Footsore's Welsh kickstarter. I will use these as Irish and stick to archers in my future Welsh forces.
Getting close to the point where I have replaced all the original Irish kitbashes in this thread with models that did not exist when that project began. Just need to make some WGA/Victrix slinger kitbashes.
-
Those look great! I like the sense of motion in a lot of the sculpts, not a lot of figures really capture that effectively.
Just curious, are the models fairly durable? Some of the parts look delicate and I would be terrified of breaking them!
-
Probably a bit fragile. The V&V resin has some flex so it is more durable than it looks but parts are thin. The Footsore minis are metal, mostly I'm concerned about the released sling which may bend.

Right, going to be quite a few pictures on here, so let us get on with it. Managed to finish a chunk of models in the last few days, which gets a couple of projects to the stage where I can show a load of photos.
First, I finished this load of slingers, four Footsore welsh and four kitbashed WGA/victrix plastics. Painted as Irish to join my SAGA irish force.
This means I have 24 slingers, composed of V&V resins, Footsore metals and a few plastic kitbashes:
And those 24 levy slingers finish a project I never really set out on, which is to completely redo the irish army that started this entire thread. When I began making my irish force four years ago, there were few decent irish minis on the market and I wanted to do a plastic kitbash. Since then, we have been treated to Victrix entire dark age range (excellent source for kitbashing), WGAs decent plastic irish, V&Vs irish range and Footsore's welsh range sculpted by Matt Bickley.
As a result, my irish force now looks like this:
Rather than like this:
It seems every single mini except the original Warlord has been replaced. So I decided to raffle off the original army to my gaming club. I am keeping the original Warlord though, so as you can see in the "old" photo, there is a simple WGA plastic Irish warlord. I painted this guy up with the purpose of raffling off an all plastic army.
Secondly, I've also managed to get started on a Welsh SAGA force using Footsore miniatures. The core is the kickstarter from earlier this year, but I am supplementing with some more Matt Bickley sculpts. Rather than source Welsh minis that do not share a sculpting style, I am aiming to make this a 100% Bickley force, by supplementing with his Saxons as well as some Antedilivian Islemen. I figure there will be overlap in styles along the eastern border.
Here's what I have so far:

Really impressive forces here!
The bright blue accents on the Welsh colour scheme are a really nice touch as well!

Thank mate! I felt like the rich elite fellows needed a bit of pop.

Brilliant work! 👏🏻
-
Agree with the others, that’s a very nice looking force. Lots of subtle details in the mix, too!
-
Fantastic to see your Footsore Welsh; I haven't seen many painted up outside of Footsore's shop. I have the knife men and archers primed and in the queue so I find your work motivating.
-
Very generous of you to raffle off an old army mate - you may have given me an idea for some of my stuff in fact.
Loving the new additions; oddly I've never played against Irish! Hope to remedy that some time.

It is a fun way to make space on the shelves. I fear my club mates may think I'm a little bit insane as beside the irish I raffled off 6 pts of Epirotes (hated playing the faction, never finished painting) and my old Lannisters which is roughly another 6-8 pts in SAGA terms. The thing is that indie games like these are almost impossible to sell in Sweden, beyond possibly these few club mates, and for spare change if so.
-
Couple more Welsh units done, getting closer to a playable force now. I will initially play these as Cymry Welsh from Age of Invasions, even though the sculpts are more 10th-11th century. The simple reason for this is that cymry get foot hearthguard without javelins, which I had nice miniatures for from the kickstarter. I will eventually paint up some mounted and javelin-equiped hearthguard and run the Age of Viking standard list as well.
So, five hearthguard. Four are really Saxons, but i figure cultural overlap. I prefer to have matching Matt Bickley sculpts over being a stickler for trouser length. The last is a bonus mini from the kickstarter. The previous set having one lad with a dane axe has bothered me a bit, so this gives me eight hand weapon and shield lads.
And then my first javelins for what is a javelin focused faction in SAGA, eight warriors. These are a mix of the different Footsore packs with javelins and spears. I've done plastic javelins and shields on most of them as I prefer that to metals. They need at least eight more stick throwing friends, maybe more.

These are some very nice figures, with great paint jobs, but then that is what we have come to expect!

Very dynamic. It's a great collection 8)

Nice looking force. :-* :-*
-
Excellent.
-
Fantastic figures! Some of the most life like I've ever seen!
-
And some more... The sculpts on these are great, but the casts are not as good as I would like. Not a candle to Claymore for example. Bit dissapointing really, and makes them a bit less fun to work on.
Still, eight more warriors done, I now have something of a playable force. Next up, and last for this, eight mounted hearthguard and a mounted warlord.

They look quite good - nicely dynamic sculpting and I like your paint jobs!
-
Looking brilliant! I love Matt Bickleys dynamic way of sculpting miniatures, and they work a charm with a nic epaintjob like this.
I agree on the casting quality though. I think it was a bit of a rush to cast everything for Kickstarter backers (I am one of them)...but there a lot of flash and unfortunately a good bit of fudged up faces (especially those wearing helmets). Its odd, because normaly I find Footsore castings to be quite good (even though Antediluvian, doing some Matt Bickley medievals too, is a whole lot better)
-
And done! Managed to finish the last of the Viking Age welsh with hours to spare in 2022. I have already complained a bit about casting quality of this range of miniatures, so I will just quickly point out that horses have been swapped for plastic horses from Victrix gaul cavalry set. Fortunately I had used up the riders from this kit elsewhere and left the horses. Some carving and sanding and riders were able to fit on the plastic horses. Javelins and shields and also plastic, from Wargames Altantic's Irish sprues. I couldn't resist giving the Warlord the spiffy commander shield from there, probably incredibly historically incorrect.

Well, new year and new project. I was very much inspired by Koyote's and Knight-captain Tyr's excellent Pagan Rus projects last year and had an eye toward something similar. When I started my Rohan project I knew I would have a lot of victrix foot troops left over and so this project is a step towards using some of them.
I've also been playing a lot of Mount & Blade II Bannerlord this last year (as mentioned in my fantasy thread) and one of my two prefered factions to play is Sturgia, very much a Rus-inspired culture.
So with that in mind I decided to get started. It seems the Pagan Rus in SAGA is a relatively elite force, prefering hearthguard and warriors over levy, so this might be quite quick.
These last few days I have managed to kitbash a warlord and four hearthguard, using a variety of Victrix and even Wargames Atlantic parts. I see a lot of Rus figures have mustaches rather than beards so I even used an anglo saxon body amoing the vikings. Also a dacian body and some cloaks. What do you think, does it work?

The green stuff work is seriously impressive. That Cossack hairdo on the warlord is top tier.

I agree! 👍

Brilliant job!
Looking forawrd to see the rest of the warband together!

Thank you! Started a little painting today, another eight hearthguard will be recycled from a retired Black Duns unit (one of the projects in my fantasy log), so no conversion pictures there. Once the hearthguard are done I need to built 24 warriors and then I am planning a multi-purpose mercenary unit. I have been meaning to make a unit of javelin armed woodsmen for my Rohan (again, in the fantasy thread) representing Mirkwood woodsmen, but they should also work as some baltic scouts.
-
Right, here we are. Took a couple of weeks but I managed to paint the hearthguard, including their repurposed friends who have previously been Oathmark humans. I've taken some inspiration form V&V minatures' design on their Pagan Rus when converting these, going for some helmet spikes and some feathers. Then I have just gone for some wintery themes with a bit of fur around helmets and shoulders, probably very fantastical but another visual cue that they are not vanilla vikings. The colour scheme is inspired by the Sturgian faction in Mount & Blade: Bannerlord. Warriors will be more gray and less blue.

They look pretty hard to me.
-
Great work! 👍
-
With the twelve hearthguard built I started on 3 points worth of warriors. There was only a single old Black Duns figure that I wanted to recycle for this project, so I had to build 23 new ones. I've used a majority Dacian bodies, even two of the Bastarnae barechested bodies, plus a few Vikings and a couple of bodies from the Dark Age archer kit, especially the slinger bodies that I had spare anyway. You can make some nice dynamic poses with those.
Because I am using snow on the bases I want the minis to reflect some colder temperatures. I tried to do some scarves as a homage to the Sturgian soldiers and spearmen, but didn't like how they came out, so I've gone with mostly cloaks and some fur. Minis with hats have fur rims added on. In the Osprey volume on russian middle ages there are some pictures of Rus in long open coats, so I sculpted a pair of those as well, but they are a lot of work, so only a few.
I've gone for more old short swords, axes and seaxes as I don't want them to look too professional. For shields, I am thinking a mix of square shields (borrowed from my Oathmark humans) and rounds. Ideally I could split my big warrior units into a round shield unit and a square shield unit on the table.
What do you think?

And while I slowly paint the warriors I kitbashed the last component of this force, eight mercenary troops with Javelins. When working for the Pagan Rus they represent baltic woodsmen paid to scout for the main force. In SAGA terms that means they are Guide mercenaries, with javelins.
I've used bodies from Victrix Dark Age archers and Vikings, and heads from those kits plus the Dacians. I went for beards, long hair and if possible bandanas to give them some distinction from my other hairy fellows. For arms and weapons I've used Fireforge's Almughavar kit, with those lovely chopping knives, and supplemented with some javelins and shields from Victrix norman cav and WGA's Irish kit. A real frankenstien to be sure.

Real frankenstein minis, for sure.
But really good job too ! :-*

Very nice kitbashing.

Got the Warriors completed. Leaning more towards the quick and dirty, but it will do for gaming. Ended up going with a mix of square oathmark shields and round shield from Victrix. This way I can differentiate units on the table.

And with my Rhudaur hillmen finished, it is apparently time to embark on SAGA project #3 this year. Could not resist the Victrix late romans, and while I was drawn to the british for modelling reasons, their gameplay in SAGA seemed poor at best, so I went with me second favorite option, the germanic people. Going to be using these as both visigoths and saxons in SAGA.
Here's what I assembled for my first batch to be painted:
What do you think?
-
...and I changed my mind. Inspiration and desire to paint are key to my productivity, I am not a planner. Was not feeling the germanics, so I went back and stripped of some greenstuff, plied off some heads and rebuilt the figures as Romano-British. The Briton force is considered somewhat underpowered in SAGA, but on the other hand, due for a buff when the next FAQ comes out.
So six foot hearthguard from the armoured kit:
And 11 warriors, from both the regular unarmoured sprue and the command sprue in that kit:
What do you think?
-
The figures look great to me! I’m looking forward to seeing the painted versions when you complete them- your colour choices always suit the figures well.
-
Nice work so far- I look forward to seeing them painted. I might have to get a couple of those kits: some as Britons and some as Germanic types.
-
Spent the day building more Romano-British. The Victrix kits continue to be absolutely lovely. For the army, I am envisioning a british warlord returned to Britannia after serving in the roman army. He brings with him some veterans, some mercenaries and a desire to carve out a kingdom of his own. His clan makes up the bulk of the force. Conveniently this gives me an exuse for both some more Roman and some more germanic features in my army.
So warlord with a banner bearer plus companions. The warlord and banner will go on a sabot base once painted. Mostly from the armoured late roman command sprue, though the warlord head is from the unarmoured roman command sprue instead. I just loved that boar crest plus plume.
12 briton warriors, pretty much straight from the unarmoured roman sprue and command sprue. Two future unit leaders got the two facemask helms from the armoured command sprue.
And finally, a unit of roman deserters. This is a mercenary option in Age of Invasions, and they are essentially regular infantry that due to their mixed equipment can make a ranged attack per turn. I decided to model two bows, a pilum and two darts in the unit to represent this.
What do you think?
-
Couple more builds for the Britons. Painting is under way and should have something to show soon.
First, another four hearthguard as I had the figures, may as well build them. Small conversions with getting the rolled up cloaks (what are these called in english?) onto some figures that normally do not have them.
And then a bishop, a mercenary hero in Age of Invasions. My quick research indicated that clerical vestments were in their infancy in the 5th century, and that clergy were known to break the ban on fighting in battles for various reasons. The hero stats in SAGA indicate an armoured figure as well, so I decided on a more noble appearance and then just a staff with crucifix to indicate his religious authority. Cleary he figures family and power are important enough to break some rules and heads over.
What do you think?

The figures in the last few posts all look quite good, they definitely should make a great post-Roman British force. I’m looking forward to seeing the units as they are painted!
-
First set of warriors painted and based. Waiting on transfers to do the shields.
I decided on a limited palette for this force, with red as the focal colour. Inspired a bit by the masai, another people known for their plaid game.
Basing is rugged fields by geek gaming, and then a mix of green tufts.

Sweet. Ambrosius would approve!

And some mercenaries got completed as well. Had some LBMS transfers left from when this was going to be a germanic project, and couldn't let them go entirely to waste.

-
Good work. TY
-
Vortigern would approve!
-
Plugging away at this little Arthurian project. First up, finished the second mercenary unit, a squad of Roman deserters. In SAGA terms, these are plain warriors with sword and shield, but have a special rule to reflect varied equipment, allowing them a once per turn ranged attack activation. I decided to model this by having a variety of weapons in the unit, but still making sure each figure had a large shield (their second distinct rule).
And then assembled/kitbashed 12 levy with sling. Staff slings to be specific as I liked the idea, though some of them were a pain to assemble. Four connection points is at least two too many to deal with. Had to rummage thorugh the bit box for some heads as well to get variation, so we have a bit of gallic, anglo saxon and irish representation in this romano-british unit.

These are nice, and I like the blue on the Rus. 8)

Awesome job on the mercenaries, they look suitably businesslike!

Fantastic work! :-*

Bit more work done on the britons. These are the same warriors shown previously, but now with shields as I received as shipment of Victrix transfers today. Looking forward to making some serious progress on this project now.

Had a productive day yesterday, finishing the paintjobs on the other 12 briton warriors and built a few figures as well. That means I am done with painting warriors for this force, most of what is left is now hearthguard and heroes, which should be fun. Speaking of hearthguard I also received the final kit I needed, Victrix late roman cavalry, and build six mounted hearthguard. Gave them all face mask helments as the kit had enough of these for the unit, and did a little bit of greenstuff work to sort of cloaks.

Really nice work! I love the Victrix Late Roman range- some wonderful kits.
-
Thank you! Such a nice range indeed, the armoured infantry are the highlight for me but all of it is really nice.
Finished the levy today, starting to incorporate a few more speed paints into my routine which really helps. Tunics here are speedpaint and then two quick layers of drybrush for example.
What do you think?

And the foot hearthguard are completed as well. Victrix armoured late romans is a fantastic kit for sure, so it was fun to paint these even though they probably will be sidelined for cavalry most of the time.
What do you think?

And foot command done. Warlord, his two companions which is a unique feature for the Britons in SAGA, and a banner. Warlord and banner will go on a sabot base in the future. The companions did not initially have any cloaks as there are none for these bodies on the sprue, but halfway through painting I felt that they were not cohesive enough with the force, so I sculpted some. Fortunately nothing got messed up and I am quite pleased with how they turned out.

Thank you! You can see some evolution of my basing in this thread, from the painted sand and tufts to the premixed flock mixes from Geek Gaming Scenics. Really recommend these as they are very easy to get looking good, and it's quite fun to select different mixes for your projects.

And the hearthguard cavalry are done. These painted up much quicker than I expected, with a lot of detail on the horses and tack. Quite pleased with these, and I think I might be getting closer to figuring out my new light setup for photography.

Haha, yeah, I started painting just over a month ago. So far, we're are 10.5 pts painted, but half of that is hearthguard.

Superb :-*

really lovely results.
-
And here is a mounted version of the Warlord and his companions. Seems I didn't post pictures of the builds for these, but the warlord has the upper body cut from the Unarmoured Command Sprue, while the companions just have heads from the command sprues. The companions use one part of the two-part cloaks on the cavalry sprue, but I used greenstuff for the lower part as I didn't like how the bit fit.
-
And a little surprise update for my Irish. I bought this Gripping Beast figure, he's intended as Ulf the Quarellsome, on a whim. The sculpt is lovely, but the casting was pretty bad. Things did not fit together and the weapons were awful so I swapped them for some Victrix plastics by just cutting off the original hands and gluing some hands from the Norman cavalry set in place.
Will just use as a regular Warlord for my Irish as I am not huge on the terribly unbalanced legendaries in SAGA.

Great stuff here, inspirational!

As I was looking through the Age of Invasions book again the other day, I once again happened to read the Scotti old friends, new enemies. This is a variant of the Age of Vikings Irish faction, using the irish battleboard but with some different equipment options. Notably the Warlord can go on a chariot, and warlord and curaidh can me mounted with javelins.
I also realised that I happened to have exactly three Victrix late roman cavalry left from the Britons, and that I had a chariot lying around, so mini project started. So far I've built the mounted variants:

Was able to get the scotti warlord and curaidh ready for a little game day at the club today. Very much enjoyed playing the Scotti variant in SAGA, as the mobility of the warlord and curaidh give so many more opportunities for the warband. I also was able to run my favourite mercenaries, the Roman Deserters, and they are super solid with the Irish battleboard. So fun all in all, at least for me. My opponents were not quite as impressed....

...and starting anther project, for the upcoming SAGA Age of Chivalry (100 year war and related conflicts). Going to paint these quite generic so they can play several of the factions.
Figures are a mix of Claymore Castings and Perry.

Thanks so much! :D
-
Took a moment this morning to build a few more pavisiers, as my Claymore figures wouldn't exactly make a full point for SAGA. Somehow I got my units mixed up an made four when I needed two, so after lunch I came back and built yet another two, to get me to 20 pavisier warriors, or 2.5 pts in SAGA terms.
Initial four with the Claymore figures. As you can see they match quite well in size and style, and even though Claymore is meant to be Crecy and Perry Agincourt, they blend well enough.
-
And got the first unit painted. I had several knights already in progress from an old partially abandoned project, four partially and one fully painted Claymore french knights, plus a started John the Blind figure (with the generic helmet to make my own noble rather than John himself). I added their Count Alencon and a 3D printed Portugese Knight by Reconquer Designs that I had assembled but not started. These took me a little while as I am not the biggest fan of painting such bright colours.
The idea is that they are generic enough to serve as a number of factins, such as Gascones in english service, French, Navarrese or castillian on either side.
I will probably go back and add some dirt to the barding, and lavender tufts on the bases.
What do you think?

They look great mate- I don't know whether to mention this or not but in Heraldry you cannot pout a "colour" on a "colour", nor a "metal" on a "metal". One can put a "metal" on a "colour" and vice versa .
Colours:
Red = Gules.
Blue = Azure.
Green = Vert.
Black = Sable.
Purple = Purpure.
Metals:
Argent (silver, white)
Or (gold, yellow)
It get's a lot more complicated than that!
Hope that helps?

lovely figures

Great work mate! 👍

wonderful painting.

Thanks guys, much appreciated!
If anyone followed my Game of Thrones project, I had a period where I got really into civilian figures for the setting. Most of the Claymore figures going into this project have been taken from that old project, but I also happened upon some 1st Corps Camp Follower figures and bits that had been sat unpainted since doing the original lot of civilians. I based them up on 40mm rounds with the idea of using them as objectives for SAGA.
Here's how they've turned out:

I think they are a great idea and well executed

Adding civilians like that for objective markers looks great.

Very nice work. Possibly some variation in the liveries on the shields (They don't appear to be coats of arms unless taken from a couple of centuries earlier?)

Just going with what my limited patience can manage to freehand really...

I went all in on Footsore's Welsh kickstarter a while back, and ended up with just about 6 pts of viking age welsh for SAGA, plus an assortment of rougghly high medieval figures. Some have found their home in my Sludge Free People force, and the last few have been in a box for quite a while. I was not terribly impressed with the quality of Footsore metal figures, so I am not planning on buying any more. As I was looking through the box of kickstarter leftovers I happened upon these four, who Footsore label "poor knights". I figured they could serve in a pinch as welsh adventurers/mercenaries in my 14th century force, even though their equipment is a bit outdated.

They still look great even if you're not impressed.
What was the issue with Footsore? I love their Dark Age sculpts but stopped buying in 2022 after repeated issues with casting quality. The same issue? Or not so keen on the Welsh sculpts?

I dislike the metal they use, I believe with quite a high lead content, and the casting quality it gives. The sculpts themselves are excellent.

And I managed to finish a couple more figures with hours to spare before travelling for New Years. After struggling with my first lot of 100 year war soldiers, I decided to paint the next lot in retinues instead of SAGA units, so a couple figures from each troop type, all in the same colour scheme. First retinue out are in my commanders scheme of red and yellow quartered.

This lot adds a second mounted Warlord figure, the lovely Camino de Santiago special figure from Stronghold Terrain. Sculpted by the fellow behind Reconquer Designs. An older, pious noble. He has walked the path of Saint James, and displays the cross to show his virtue.

Four pavisiers, two perry, one claymore, one antediluvian scot who got a surgical transplant of some plastic Perry arms:

And then some Perry plastics, three mounted Warriors (in SAGA terms, not sure what the historical designation would be for these)

And three levy crossbowmen. I used some bodies from the English archers to reduce the amount of armour on these:

great stuff as usual! really like the color scheme on these...!

Another small viking age (or earlier) Irish interlude. Built some Irish characters in older style armour using Victrix late romans. The warlord on chariot is an option in the Scotti variant list from Age of Invasions, so migration rather than viking period.

Thanks guys!
Today, just a small update on the 14th century force. If you are not part of the SAGA community, the Age of Chivalry expansion is still quite a ways out. There is no release date yet, but one of the authors estimated in an interview this summer at the very earliest. So, I have plenty of time to work on that force and it will not be that big a priority this early in the year. I just need to paint enough figures to test Blood & Crowns at some point, but I think I am pretty close there.
Now if you have followed my projects for a bit, you know that I am a big fan of Claymore Castings and their range. Going all the way back to my Game of Thrones project I've bought almost all of their new releases as they have come out. Today I just have a little hobby update, assembling some things, new and old.
First all four of their new knights, which come with foot and horse versions. Absolutely love these. Claymore has intended them as speciic personalities from the 100 year war, but I'm going to be going with other heraldry for these. I used a plastic Perry lance rather than wire, as all my other figures use plastic spears and lances.
And secondly, some bits and pieces. I dug up their Black Prince figure, and since my force is partially themed around Spain and I happen to have a bunch of suitable archers, I could in fact play his force in the Castillian civil war. May as well paint him in other words. No use for King Edward however, so he got a headswap with one of the very fancy great helms from their modular Knight kit. Potentially a cool warlord, maybe a flamboyant free company leader. Had to do some greenstuff to fix his aventail. I had a spare knight with no horse, but a V&V resin horse, so quick fix there. The horse archers holding horses got assembled on bases that could be objective markers. Finally, one of their two packs of skirmishers. Not sure these will have a use in SAGA, but if they do I can happily buy the second set they offer.

They look fantastic! Lovely dynamic poses, can’t wait to see them painted ;)

I love what you've done with your Britons. Excellent GS work as well.
I wasn't really too excited about Age of Chivalry until I saw your Claymore Castings minis.
-
The figures look great! Thanks for showing them!
-
beautiful paint-jobs.
-
Lovely.
-
Got another 12 archers painted, 8 claymore english and 4 footsore welsh. I had just thought to use these as archer levy for the factions that can take them, but I easily have the figures needed to play the English faction, in which case they are warriors rather than levy.

I think they look great as always! Love the grubby vibe :D
-
Completely agree, they look excellent. The colour palette you used really suits the figures.

With Age of Chivalry still pretty far off on the horizon, I've been distracted by other projects. You'll find my small greek project in the ancients forum, which I managed to finish just in time before receiving an order including Victrix's new saxon figures.
Already last year when I started working on their late romans I fielded the idea of a multi-purpose germanic army that could play using Saxon, Frank and even Visigoth battleboards from SAGA Age of Invasions. That project took a wrong turn and ended up being a small band of romano-british instead, but with the release of the saxons I decided to revisit the idea. Inspired as always by koyote's lovely work and thorough prep I did some reading on the parts of the norse sagas that are considered completely mythological. I figured if the minis can be jutes, they can also be geats and swedes. I happen to live in västergötland, the land of the western geats, so that of course appeals. I then stumbled on the character Hervor, daughter of Heidrek, a shieldmaiden who commands a fort in the Myrkvidr. Mirkvidr simply means dark forest and there is no clear relation to any particular area today. So that is the theme settled, a mixed germanic force of geats, jutes and even some goths, with a forest basing theme.
I had previously bought a Gripping Beast Ragnar Lothbrok, and made him a commander base as a potential leader for this army (at least until a find a nice shieldmaid commander)
And last night got the kits pictured above. I first built a Warrior from the saxon kit, and put down some bits for his base:
And then tried a kitbash of Victrix bits and the WGA goths to make a levy with javelin:
What do you think?

It seems like a great project, I am looking forward to seeing updates as it progresses!
-
Oh yeah, this is gonna be good! :-*
-
After a little bit of a longer building session tonight, I've got two points assembled.
First, a point of sword and board warriors. Pretty much straight from the Saxon kit, plus two Goth heads:
And then a point of javelin levy. Wargames Atlantic bodies, Victrix heads. Arms are a mix of both.
-
Good to see how well the WGA Goths mix in with Victrix. I'll be adding some to my collection.
-
Brilliant!
I’ve long admired and been inspired by your work.
What faction will this warband represent? Germanic People?

Brilliant!

Thank you! From my Middle Earth projects I've come to really appreciate a force that can be used for multiple warbands, so I am planning on building enough heathens to be able to play as Saxons, either regular or Germanic Pagans, Franks, Visigoths and even perhaps even Vikings. The Vendel finds from near Uppsala includes helmets very similar to the Sutton Hoo helmet, so I believe north germanics ca 6th century would be quite similar in appearance and the shieldmaid Hervor that I mentioned was said to command a force of goths, despite being I think jute or geat herself.
-
I wish that AoI Saxons could take javelin Levy and/or HG cavalry. As such, I'm going to build my Jutes so they can be played as either Saxons or Germanic People.
It is also my hope that the pending AoI FAQ will give the Saxons some love. It's a pretty good board, but feels a little weak. A few little tweaks could go a long ways. Fingers crossed.
-
I was about to start this post with "Nothing painted yet", but I realised it has been all of two days since the figures arrived so it should not come as a surprise.
Most of my hobby time today was spent kitbashing germanic archer levy from Victrix Late Roman and Dark Age archers. Some of the dark age archers have leg wear that seems a bit more norman or even high medieval, so I was only able to source a couple of bodies from what I had left there. The late roman archers donated the rest. I ended up using the late roman short bows, even if the dark age archer short bows perhaps would be more appropriate. It was simply easier to use the arms that went with most of the bodies.
I also couldn't quite resist having a play with the armoured Saxon sprue, and built this banner bearer:

Really like what you're doing here and giving me a lot of ideas for my own Early Saxon warband. I've used the Gripping Beast archers but not overly impressed with them to be honest. Victrix archers have either been built as singers or converted to warriors with the exception of the ones in hose which will be used for a 1066 project. Late Roman slingers/archers are on the to buy list though I'll probably use bows from dark ages set instead. Seeing what you've done with the WGA Goths though I'm going to pick them up to provide some Saxon archers.

The WGA goths will do nicely as archers too! In fact if I didn't have spare Victrix archers, I would have probably done that. I've started painting the javelin lads, and I do understand the people that prefer WGA to Victrix in that they paint up very quickly and quite nicely. I still prefer the detail on Victrix, but it is satisfying when a mini comes together quickly without any fuss.
-
Victrix will always be my first choice.
-
Banner bearer looks great! I’ll second WA as well, the detail is good and they are much simpler to knock together than Victrix.
-
Had the day off today (thank you worker's movement) and decided to organize a small event at the club. After some drop outs due to real life, we ended up being only three players and I only had a single game with my Britons against Franks. Now last time I faced these franks they destroyed my Ostrogoth rohan. They have some great abilities to activate lots of units and get really cheap bonus attack dice. Combined with a player who has an incredible knack for making way more saves than he should it felt like it was going to be an uphill battle.
Instead, as I marched up and prepared the Briton defensive abilities, I was able to make incredibly good trades. Losing 7 warriors to take out six hearthguard on the first charge of the game, having a unit of sling levy batter some Frank warriors over and over again due to solid cover, and finally shooting his warlord to death. I played the scenario better, and the increasing advantage in numbers meant there was no way for the franks to catch up on points.
And then in the evening I managed to get somy hobbying done. I have started painting the javelin levy, but it'll be a bit before they are done. In the meantime I did a bit more assembling and kitbashing.
I decided to designate the two fanciest figures from the armoured Saxons sprue as heroes and made them a warlord sabot base as well.
And then combined the remaining four with two armoured late romans to make six hearthguard.

Looking great. Really shows how well the Victrix sets can be mixed as I wouldn't know which were the Late Roman figures if I didn't have them myself.
-
Agreed on the Victrix. I’m in the middle of a fantasy force that mixes light Saxons, Vikings, Norman crossbows and Hoplites, the only issue was that the Normans have no necks (so I had to improvise) otherwise it all went together very nicely.
-
Always good practice to have some pre-made rolls of greenstuff from which to cut spacers in those situations :)
-
Good thinking! I actually used a bit of sprue lol
-
Another little build update today. I built another version of the banner bearer chap from earlier, this version is intended as a personal champion. I also picked up a Shieldmaiden Commander by Stronghold terrain. I think she will do nicely as Hervor, who I mentioned earlier.

Fantastic! Can’t wait to see everything painted up :)
-
Finally finished a first unit, been distracted by both illness and other little projects. Uniforms are of course not historical for this time period, but I do like to have my forces a bit more coherent. To that end I have picked out red and blue as my primary colours, supported by brown and gray. As these are levy their colours are very muted, the warriors will be a bit brighter and the hearthguard even more so.
For the bases, I mixed up a custom blend of Geek Gaming Pine Forest Floor, Krautcover Kodama Woods and some leaf scatter from Green Stuff World.
What do you think?

The bases look amazing! Really nice work ;)
-
I like them too. While it is true that uniforms were not used, I like the limited colour palette you used. It isn’t over-regular but will still help a bit to identify the unit during game play. The bases do look good. Do you do anything to use the basing mix, such as place the larger bits before adding the finer mix, or do you just put the glue down and dunk the base in the mix? I’ve never used a premix like that, so I’m curious.

Thanks mate! I was converted to the gospel of the base mix last year, and you can see it used on my Rhudaur and Rohan in the fantasy thread, plus the Britons and late medievals here. As you can see on last page, I glue down any large items such as twigs, rocks, sculpted details and paint them during the painting stage. I then paint the base itself dark brown just so there is no risk of light colours shining through. Put a layer of glue on the base (strongly recommend Geek Gaming's basing glue, it flows well, grabs well and dries quick compared to PVA) and then just dunk the base in the mix. Shake of excess. If you want, you can seal them. Geek Gaming sell a specific sealing glue as well, but I usually don't bother with more then my spray varnish.
-
Awesome, thanks for the information about your technique!
-
Posting mostly just for documentation, another 8 germanic warriors built. Starting to do a bit more kitbashing with the kits now, and will probably have to do a good bit more cutting and fixing on the next lot. Managed to fit a viking head and a head in full aventail from the armoured saxons on these.

Very good. :)
-
Really enjoying your process, keep on posting!

Great stuff- very fierce looking ;)
-
They do have bags of character.
I just wish they’d render the fur a bit differently. And tone down the exaggerated folds in the tunics.
But overall, very tempting. (Except I already have a metal early Saxon army lol)
-
... And tone down the exaggerated folds in the tunics.
Seconded... I still love the kits though. :D
-
I've gotten quite distracted by swamp orcs recently, so this project is moving slowly. However, I did pick up a few metal figures (Footsore and Gripping Beast) from my local dealer and had a little fiddle with some parts.
This is Gripping Beast's Saxon Banner Bearer, a nice but slightly rough sculpt. I replaced the head (couldn't find a face in there anywhere on my cast....) and gave him a hand with a spear. Both Victrix bits of course. If he turns out nice once the paint is on, he might serve as a personal champion. He is quite the tall fellow so will not be dwarfed by the Victrix figures.
-
As mentioned in the post just above, I did grab a couple of metal figures. I've now converted them a little bit to suit my tastes better.
From left to right there is a Footsore Saxon Warlord, quite a nice model really. Just got a plastic spear. Then Footsore's Guinevere. A lovely figure, I just didn't like the small shield and the cricket bat of a metal sword, so I swapped her hands for plastic and used some greenstuff to cover the damage. Then the Gripping Beast Saxon Banner Bearer from before, just a little bit of greenstuff to cover the gaps between mail and fur. Finally Gripping Beast's Briton Banner Bearer. Again converted to champion instead of flag holder. He came with a scenic base that I discarded. Lovely sculpt but typical of GB the cast is a little meh. Could be crisper. He will join my Britons, so who knows when I get around to painting him.

Finally a bit of an update on the great heathen project of '24. I had intended to batch paint these in small groups like I did my greek hoplites earlier this year, but building and collecting got the better of me and the first batch ended up 25 figures large. Mostly Victrix unarmoured Saxons, with some Viking and Goth heads, reinforced by a trio of shieldmaidens (two from Stronghold, one Bad Squiddo). Then a couple of heroes, a personal champion made from Gripping Beast's Saxon Banner bearer. I've named him Gregor, also seen here posing next to Ragnar Lothbrok. Then a pair of shieldmaid leaders, one Stronghold again, the other Footsore. Finally Footsore's Saxon warlord, who I got before really deciding on which figures to use to lead this warband. I fear he will be a shelf warmer more than anything.

Thank you! Not sure if I mentioned it before, but beyond bark for the rocks, twigs, tufts and some 3d printed details the basing for these uses a mix of flock blends: Kodama Woods from Krautcover, Pine Forest Floor from Geek Gaming and some leaf scatter from Green Stuff World.
-
Masterful work! Brilliant brushwork!
-
Lovely! Great to see everything painted up at last, love the warm palette :-*
-
Great addition, i like how you use potentially rather strong colors like red and blue and tone them down so it doesn't look like a Dark Age Circus :)
-
Thanks everyone, glad you enjoy following this project. This update may seem a little silly after all the heroes I just finished painting, but as I started painting the plastic warlord (pics a couple pages back) I felt more and more unhappy with the build. The scale armour body is nice but the pose is a little wonky and the head with face mask looks a little uncanny valley. I ended up building a new iteration using my favourite head from the Victrix armoured late romans. A bit of greenstuff fur to give him a bit of a stronger profile as well.

As always, I am easily distracted and hop from project to project. I'd recently decided to shift the colour scheme of my 100 year war collection to all red and gold instead of the medley of colours I had started with. The other day I picked up some foot men at arms from the shelf and decided to get some painting done on this project. Here is the first result, including a pair of sabot bases to give me options for foot warlord when using these for SAGA. Painting knights with a lot of armour and a few bright colours is nice and fast.

Those look very sharp, the red and yellow palette is a classic!

They look fantastic! The commander especially, really nice sculpt, and a great scheme too :D
-
While I was at it, I went ahead and started on any remaining foot knights I could find. (one eluded me by having fallen on the floor, he is now found and going through a head swap). Lovely and quick to paint with all that steel. These are the remaining three out of Claymore's recent named characters release, as well as their Black Prince figure and the foot version of Stronghold Terrain's Camino de Santiago knight. You can find the mounted version of him earlier in the thread. The mounted Claymore figures will follow soon.
Plus a little group shot. I will never need all of these for SAGA, but I did notice that one of the Spanish lists for Blood & Crowns has unlimited access to foot men at arms, so there is that.

-
Lovely work as always! Particularly like that bareheaded one, really nice job on the face there ;)
-
Excellent looking figures!
-
Nicely done knights!
-
Couple of more knights finished. I think this is it in the partial plate department for now.
First up is the set of four named characters on foot and mounted that Claymore released last year (I think). Lovely minis. I think these are done by their digital sculptor, and really show the best of what can be done in that way. Super clean and lovely details. Claymore's casts are also impeccable, big kudos to their casters.

I entered some of these into a paint contest ran by SAGA Thorsday, but needed to add another figure as I had already started one of them before the contest was announced. That ended up being this kitbashed Claymore knight on resin horse:
And finally I finished my conversion of their King Edward figure. I had no use for a helmetless and crowned figure, so attempted to swap his head for a spare one. I ended up not being happy with my effort at sculpting mail aventail, so instead he got a greenstuff cloak. I think the drapes and folds are some of my best yet.

great stuff.

So back in July as I was painting up my various Spanish knights, I also noticed that 3D printer Studio Historia was offering Ezipion miniatures in 28mm scale. I had been wanting to check these out for a bit but they were designed for 34mm and not many licensed printers available. I had previously bought a mini or two from Studio Historia and know that they print in good quality and with a relatively durable resin. I ended up buying a couple of different sets of mostly knights labeled Late Crusaders. Printing and delivery took a good six weeks or so, but prints were good and breakage minimal.
Here are the first painted figures, the set of Late Crusader knights on foot, plus a Lay Knight to make an even ten. I went with the cross of Saint James as a homage to the crusader label on these guys.
(http://i.imgur.com/gNmzjTv.jpg) (https://imgur.com/gNmzjTv)
Here is a comparison with my converted cloaked Claymore knight:
I also bought a hero figure. He is meant to be Radu I of Wallachia, but I will just use him as a generic spanish/navaresse nobleman. I have the mounted version as well.
And finally the historically dubious pot-de-fer. It was supplied both with a stack of small cannon balls/bullets and an arrow, and I went with the balls as it seemed to make more sense. Supposedly there is a cannon entry in the upcoming Age of Chivalry book for SAGA, so I will use this mini as that.

Dubious, maybe. But the Rule of Cool definitely wins out here. :)

Everything in that post is by Miniatures Ezipion, a 3D sculptor. I bought prints in 28mm scale from Studio Historia in the EU as I don't 3D print myself.

Amazing figures and an amazing paintjob.

Thanks for that Ogrob. I've just checked them out, and I think I might be placing a small order in the near future :D

Finished the rest of my Ezipion purchase; the mounted versions of Radu and the late crusaders.

They look badass! Very animated :)

Nice addition to the spanish force, great paintjob as usual.

A quick little unit of what SAGA would classify as Warriors with Heavy Weapons. Mostly Perry Agincourt french, some bits from the english kit too.

blimey, what fantastic figures and paint-jobs in posts 300-314 (the page above this one as I'm seeing it).

Been away for a few days, but came back yesterday and managed to finish a couple of sets of infantry.
For my 14th century force, I painted another 12 pavisiers to bring my total up to 20. I've entered some of them in a shields-themed paint contest, so decided to freehand a design. Ended up doing all 20, including the 8 I had painted several months ago:
And then also finished up the last (for now) Victrix Saxons for my early germanic force. Some bits from other Victrix kits in there just for some variety.

What do you think?

I think they look brilliant! Love the freehanded shields, how long did those take you?

Thank you! I did the shields over two days, but mostly that is drying time. I did the quartering with base colours, wash and then some tidying up. Then the freehand took probably better part of an hour.

A little sneak preview of the next project that will appear. Couldn't resist some of the new Victrix knights.

Victrix are excellent, hope you enjoy! My two recommendations would be to carefully check what parts are meant to go together (I see a lot of people not understanding the two-part dane axes in the Viking kit, and even sometimes people building figures with double elbows as the kit has two different styles of bodies and arms) and to keep in mind that the spears are very thin. The viking kit has probably the most fragile spears of any Victrix kit, later releases are a little thicker and thus more durable.
-
Got another five built, so that is two out of three sprues done. Really love the dynamic poses you can get with these, and they sure do look like proper heavy cavalry.
I've decided to go with all hand weapons for ease of transport. It occurs to me that couched lances would be ok to transport in my foam as well, but hand weapons will just be a little more durable. I guess they are on a second charge and all the lances spent.

No, but I generally game at a club and have to transport my figures there.

Not a bad work on the knights. Because of the fur, they remind me of CrossTeutons, or will they be something else?
-
The lost clan had not been seen for many years, not since the cursed forest swallowed up their ancestral keep. But as war threatens the land, they appear once again out of the forest. Drawn up, battle ready, on the frosty field, silver horns silently calling to war.
So, little bit of fluff reveal as I finish the first unit. I had in mind to build a polish army for SAGA and the theme for these was a bit of an iterative process. The horned head you see on the warlord figure caught my imagination a little bit, and I started conceptualising something of a Green Knight and polish mashup, a little bit more of a fairy tale take on knights as opposed to strictly historical. I was also a bit inspired by Naomi Novik's books Uprooted and Spinning Silver which are a sort of fantasy fairy tale with some inspiration from polish myth and legend. I also wanted to paint a mostly green army as everything else this year has been in red, yellow and blue.
I found a version of a clan coat of arms from Poland, the clan itself dates back to roughly the 12th century. The clan arms were two silver arrowheads on a red field, but there was also a variation used at some point in time with silver on green instead. I changed it a little bit to two crossed arrows as I found the arrow head design a bit too abstract.
So with that, here is the first finished set of figures for the Lost Clan from the Cursed Forest.

Thank you! As you can see from the description above I've not gone very historical with these. The cloaks are from Victrix's upgrade sprue which also features very Teutonic style helmet decorations. I like how they look, and had in mind to base them with a bit of snow so the warm cloaks make sense. Using less ostentatious heads for my regular knights, including this one sort of fantasy-Russian greathelm that came on the sprue. I think it suits the vaguely polish vibes to have a little bit of eastern influence.

i really didn't. I think it took me almost a week to post the picture of the first builds. I think the painting took me a good part of two weekends, but I also built the warlord and the next five knights while painting the first six.

Thank you! Spotting that helmet did a lot for settling on the theme for the force.

There is a lot of potential in Victrix minis. I am waiting for foot knights and maybe I'll do small, historically (in)accurate project from borderland between CrossTeutons and Poland.
One of the characteristics of polish coats of arms is, that most of them have white devices on red field. In more fantasy than historical setting, changing red for green and keeping it as a dominat field color seem ok, if polish medieval vibes are important. However crossed arrows looks too generic IMHO, especially that polish heraldry use a lot of uniqe, weird symbols of unknow origin:

They’ve just arrived and I can totally see how people go wrong here. Also, I had expected them to come in a box and was disappointed they didn’t but I suppose that keeps costs down, and they are a good price indeed.

I would go with 3 crossed lances personally as Jelita is very recognizable Polish coat of arms (if not very green in nature:P
Green is rarest color in Polish coats of arms but it was there, not sure if that early. You can see one green on the linked page but most popular would be some variant of Tromba -with differently placed 2 or 3 drinking horns.

Apologize to Ogrob for imposing my visions. Looking at his work, I started thinking too much, what I would like to do with the knights :P
@AWu
Symbols that I chose, are the oldest coats of arms. Were probably used in prechristian Poland (not as heraldic devices, but to mark territory or properity). In my mind, it make more sense to use old symbols in fantasy setting.
I agree that there are other pretty cool devices, but they are much younger. Legend dates "Jelita" to battle of Plowce 1331, "Trąby" are from late XV c.

Would love to see your take. I appeciate the information provided by you both as well. Certainly I have cherry picked to fit my vision and story as opposed to making something closer to historically correct. I think a set of victrix knights in authentic polish heraldry would look fantastic.

Ive ever don 15s. Boleslaw Rogatka and his retinue, but its more Silesian branch than traditional Polish.
I am yet to move them to 28 when Barons War knights will be released (I prefer the Footsore look and sale to heroic Victrix)

Is that freehand on 15mm? Incredible!
I finished assembling the last sprue of knights. Having 18 in the kit allows me to build 4 full points of hearthguard, plus a warlord. The spare figure got a Fireforge lance and I made a quick banner from paper.

That warlord is amazing. I really like the freehand leaf work on the horse's barding/caparison.

I've spent most of the weekend building and bashing figures.
For Polish warriors I decided to go with Victrix Normans as base. I might need these for a tournament and can't chance waiting for Victrix or WGA to release 13th century sergeants. We've not even seen previews of mounted sergeants yet. Instead I decided for a maybe slightly more archaic look, but good enough for me. As I also grabbed Victrix Pagan Rus set I used some of the heads from that set to give an eastern flair to these.
Why do I have a Pagan Rus set then? Well, as I was contemplating expanding the polish collection to something playable (and being tempted by various sales) it did occur to me that a single set of the Rus would allow me to kitbash a full infantry army. I already have a set of kitbashed Pagan Rus for SAGA, and don't particularly enjoy playing them so no sense rebuilding that faction. A faction that I do like though is the Age of Crusades Pagan People, a faction that represents the various baltic pagan tribes that resist the northern crusades. The Rus kit is definitely close enough to build some of these. However, the faction does need a lot of bow warriors, so I had to dig into the bitbox. Fortunately I had some dark age archer sprues with plenty of arms left. I also scavenged a few other bodies to increase the number of figures without mail to better work for SAGA.

A very well kitbashed force! I like the concentration on axes and spears as primary weapon. It seems like you are missing some quivers at the archers or are they just at the back of the bodies? And not sure if some other kind of bow would have fitted better to them, like the one by the Late Roman Archers. I am however not versed well enough with history to say if those are a good historical fit. And you have had probably just the Dark Age Archers at hand.
Has the new Rus set been "easy" to kitbash with the DarK Age archer arms or did you find it difficult to get natural looking poses with them?

Thank you! The axes and spears are indeed a deliberate choice. The archers all have quivers, plus daggers and axes in their belts. As they are warrior-class in SAGA, I've made sure they are a bit more kitted out than normal levy archers.
Good question on the bows, but I'm sure either style would be appropriate depending on how far east or west these particular pagans live.
Kitbashing the Rus and DA archers is a medium difficulty I'd say. Some arms and poses are very straight forward, others require some greenstuff. Having cured dowels on greenstuff in various thickness from which to cut wedges is very handy as some arms need to be adjusted in length to look natural.

The third army in this Eastern European mega-project will be Lithuanians. Unlike the poles and the pagans, this army will to a large extent be 3D printed. I've not received the prints yet, so will have to wait to show those. Instead this is the last (for now) kitbashing post and a bit of a homage to the sprue of bits.
When I decided on the Lithuanians, or Eastern Princes as SAGA calls them, the 3D options were missing suitable ranged levy figures. The Eastern Princes have two variants, Lithuanians who can only field bow levy, and Russians, who can also field crossbows. Even though my figures will mostly be Lithuanian, I decided to also build some crossbows.
For bodies for these I ordered Fireforge Game's Russian City Militia. I had seen Captain Blood kitbash some of these years ago and the sculpts look nice. You have to be prepared for Fireforge roughness however, and I am unsure if the resin will take primer well. I have washed them twice in two different soaps and will try the varnish trick before priming. On my shelf I had half a set worth of Victrix Norman Crossbows, and being Victrix there are plenty of crossbows in there. I used these, plus some Rus and Viking heads to kitbash these figures. These also needed the most extensive greenstuff work out of all conversions.
And for the bow levy I went for something a little simpler. I had a few sprues of Wargames Atlantic goths left, and these have incredibly versatile generic bodies. Mikai's comment on bows reminded me I should have some Late Roman bow arms left, but could only find a single sprue. I was able to supplement with some bow arms from the Dacian kit as well. Again, heads are mostly Rus, but I also used two late roman heads with fur hats.

My absolute favourite is the a little bit fat guy with crossbow. Gives the whole warband some better touch if there also some well-fed persons beneath them. I assume you did it already, I hope they have all some handweapon at their back, axes and clubs and such ^^
It's interesting to see how well one can kitbash everything together with some more greenstuff at hand. The little pelt fur parts are a nice addition. I think a little touch more of those would improve it (the fat guy has enough money to eat, surely he can afford something here ;D).
Personally I somehow dislike to work with resin models. I have only a few ones for special characters (two trolls, some few dogs) but avoid them at my standard troops. It's the feeling like I break them when I try to work at them. And having bought some Fireforge Dwarf Wizard for my brother also made me realise that they are a bit a pain at gluing the parts together.
The Wargames Atlantic Goth set is an unexpted but well made choice for the bowmen. My problem with products by different companies is always the look of the mail because they are all doing it slightly differently. Using the "just wearing cloth" sets to mix up the troop range is a good idea. And the Goths work well for your purpose.
I was able to supplement with some bow arms from the Dacian kit as well.
That's another good fit which hasn't come into my mind although I have some leftover bits of the Dacian kit around here too. Gives a bit more variety to them since it's a longer bow. Gave me also the idea to rework some archers of them to do that switch, good thing you mentioned it!
[...] and being Victrix there are plenty of crossbows in there. [...]
Now if any of the plastic miniature companies would do sprues just with the bodies, so that I can kitbash all my leftover arms and heads, that would be nice :D

tell me about it, I have so many Renaissance Ogre arms and heads...
-
I really should get on with painting, but I did some more kitbashing instead. Just as I had initially planned on using some medieval sergeants for polish warriors, I had planned on picking up WGA's peasant levy for well, levy. The polish are one of few SAGA factions that get spear and shield levy, which can be very cost effective and thus dangerous. They will not kill much, but they will kill more points than they lose.
However, it occurred to me that I had a box of Oathmark light human infantry on the shelf that could work just as well. I built a test figure, and then quickly set about assembling a full unit. I kitbashed them with various Victrix spear arms, mostly Saxon and Rus. Heads and belt daggers come from the Oathmark kit. One of their nicest I must say.
What do you think? What shields should they get? I have plenty of Norman kite shields, and of course the square ones that come with the set. Or simple round dark age shields?
-
Nice.I agree that the Oathmark Human Light Infantry are very useful for kitbashing. The quality of the plastic sprues, in terms of the sharpness of detail, seems to have really improved over their earlier releases. The sculpts are pretty nice. The hooded heads have been really useful for a number of my kitbashes. They also seem broadly compatible with Victrix arms.
Kitbashing is so much fun these days with all the plastic sprues that are now available for these historic periods. I've also got some WA Peasant levy on order!
-
What do you think? What shields should they get? I have plenty of Norman kite shields, and of course the square ones that come with the set. Or simple round dark age shields?
Excellent work there, well done! I would give them dark age round shields, as then they could fit in with a number of SAGA forces if you needed some extra warriors.
-

While I agree with Rossco2 that Dark Age round shields would give you the option to let them fit into various different factions if needed I would either go with some teardrop/Norman kite shields to fit your polish levy visually a little bit to your polish knights or alternatively go with the square ones to fit them with your other polish warriors (at least I understood it such that your Rus kitbash resembles polish warriors). Any choice fits though, difficult to go wrong here ;)
For a levy group I would give them more axes and maces as secondary weapons to their belts. Otherwise a fine kitbash!
-
I received a long awaited parcel of 3D prints today which has allowed to me to finish assembling all the figures and units for the Eastern European mega project.
To reiterate, this will be three separate armies for SAGA Age of Crusades, but as they will share some bits and pieces and I will also base them the same.
Polish with the green knight theme, these are built from the Victrix medieval knights kit, plus the Victrix Norman-based kitbashed heavy weapon and horse warriors, and the Oathmark light human kitbashed levy. They may also need a unit of archers, in which case I will build them from Oathmark light humans as well.
Pagan people, a faction that can represent various Baltic, Finnish or maybe even Sami pagan tribes. These are built almost entirely from Victrix Pagan Rus kit, plus some other Victrix bits like bow arms and the odd Saxon and Viking body.
And then the main event today: Lithuanians, or rather as SAGA calls them Eastern Princes. This faction is divided into a Lithuanian and a Russian subfaction. By model choice I am going to Lithuanians, but may field them as Russians as well because it allows slightly different equipment options in game. Previously I have shown a unit or archers, built from WGA goths, and a unit of crossbows, built from Fireforge Russian militia.
Today I received a number of prints, as said, mostly by Black Knight miniatures. 12 mounted nobles, 12 Samogitian axemen, 12 soldiers with hand axe and shield (well, 11 unfortunately, one body was missing) and some tanners to make objective markers. Also a Slavic commander by Reconquer designs, and a medieval wagon by Northern Crusades.
After a couple of hours of assembly, the Lithuanian host looks like this on my paint desk:
I am currently working on adding details, a driver and baggage, to the wagon. Everything else is pretty much ready for primer.
-
I keep telling myself (and others) that I don't need to do any more building before I get on with painting. However, while painting is under way, the weather had other plans. I can't go outside to varnish or prime anything else at the moment, so I have allowed myself a bit of kitbashing. In fact, I have one update per army in the triple project.
For the Lithuanians, progress on their Wagon. In SAGA terms, this is a baggage wagon that serves as a bit of distraction for the enemy and protection for your troops. I've bashed together a TerrainCrate horse with a 3D print wagon, two WGA goths and some greenstuff to make this:
Then for the Polish, a simple job of some levy archers. These are straight up Oathmark light humans. Since I will have a unit of levy in the army list, I thought I may as well build the bow option too. I will probably use these less than the spear and shield levy, but useful in the right matchup.
And for the Pagan People, the biggest job, six kitbashed hearthguard on horses with javelins. I had to rummage through all my sprues and bits boxes to find legs, bodies and horses for these. Bit of green stuff fur to pagan-ify them.

Good luck lol

Lovely work! Really nice greenstuff on the hearthguard, and hard agree, bashing things together is much quicker fun than the slog of painting.
-
That said, I have soldiered on with my painting. I had to leave things in progress and await varnishing weather, but a few days ago things cleared up. Once that was done I had to do my basing, which I finished for all three of these units last knight.
So all of these are for my Age of Crusades polish. Victrix Knights, and then two sets of norman/rus kitbashes. When Victrix makes foot and mounted sergeants for their medieval range, I may go back and redo these units to have a more western style medieval army. For now though, the kitbashes will work just fine.

All in all a lovely group, nice work! There is something about the colour combination at the green with the padded cloth which makes it looking odd for me, can't really explain it. I am not good at colour combinations so I orientate on online tools. At the one I use most times it's a fine analogous colour to the green one, so it's fine, like I said, I can't explain it:

Another entry mostly for the sake of completeness. A small delivery today, and I managed to find time in the evening for some assembly.
First, four Rus mounted warriors by V&V miniatures, to use with the Lithuanian hearthguard. Added some flags left over from the Lithuanian nobles. These will just add to the numbers, if I should ever want four points of Hearthguard for the Lithuanians. V&V are, as always, a little fiddly, but these sculpts were quite nice, not too many parts, and the resin spears even half straight. They also match my Black Knight lithuanian nobles very well in size, as you can see in the second picture.
Second, Stronghold Terrain's Crusaders with longswords and a crusader banner. I added these to my long ago purchase of Crusaders with heavy weapons pack, to make this unit. They might serve as Western Knight mercenaries. I found their scabbards to lack definition and detail, so replaced them with some plastic bits. I will likely give them plastic shields as well, as they are intended to carry a shield on their back.

And finally, I saw an interesting army composition for the Polish which needed a few more melee levy than I had already built. I only had six Oathmark bodies left, so I pressganged some Fireforge bodies into service. This lot has arms from the Oathmark light humans, but Victrix heads.
What do you think?
-
Looking at the last picture now, I think I will go back and make something from WGA Goths instead of the Fireforge minis....
-
Lovely folks you gathered here. The left Fireforge mini fits in well but the right one sticks out a bit.
-
Thank you! I kitbashed up a pair of alternate reinforcements from Wargames Atlantic goths, with Oathmark arms and Victrix heads. The WGA cloaks are a little strange fit, but this way, all figures in the units will have cloaks.
What do you think?
-
The bodies fit better. The head of the right guy might not fit in well in regard to his beard (although its a pretty beard, so a reason to keep it). Otherwise I would perhaps only suggest to do one or two weapon swaps so you don't have the same arm pose with the same weapon.
-
Good point. That axe arm is annoyingly difficult to pose. Might play around with some hand swaps before priming.
-
All right, I actually finished a whole load of figures the other day.
Photography waited until today, because I was waiting on a package containing a pair of A3 books of backdrops by John Hodgson. His kickstarter last year got delayed a whole load, but they finally arrived and look very nice. I picked one out from the ruins book and had a quick shoot of some Poles.
Spear levy - I see these as a sort of City Militia rather than ragged peasant levy. A little cleaner and better dressed, just not that great at fighting.
Archery levy - same as above really.
Then a pair of mercenary heroes for the Old Feud scenario - an advisor and a soldier. I could easily use these for multiple factions.
Some objective markers - a set of 3D printed tanners:
And some baggage markers, more 3D prints plus some farm animals from Warlord:
I reckon I will experiment a bit more with composing backdrop and maybe some scenics for photos in the future.
What do you think?
-
The figures turned out very nicely indeed - I really like the colour scheme.
With regards the backdrops, and I am not a photographer by any stretch, so only saying what I am seeing in a constructive way - but they seem a little muted in comparison to the figures. Maybe other commenters can explain how to make changes to "blend" the figures and backdrop better?
-

It looks as though the light is shining on them and reflecting back into the camera.Tilting the back drop slightly should improve the look
-
Yeah, I have a bit of glare from the light. Will experiment and see what can do.
-
I mentioned earlier that I was missing one figure from the Studio Historia order, the 3D printed Lithuanians. They graciously offered to send a replacement, so I took the opportunity to order a couple of more figures.
First this lovely (and huge) Warlord figure from Black Knight. It was a newer release, I just missed it with the previous order. Will serve as a horse+javelin warlord for the Pagan People faction, together with the kitbashed javelin hearthguard I posted a few weeks ago. I replaced the 3D printed weapons as they were a little bent and I struggle to get hot water to fix 3D resin.
And then I threw in a set of 10 lithuanian soldiers. It will allow me to field 20 shield warriors, which is a number I often arrive at regardless of faction.

Yep, you were quite right. Just swapping the hands around makes a bit difference.

Couple of days ago I was looking over my collection of sprues and noticed that I had a lot more Perry Agincourt left than I had really thought. Couldn't quite get the idea out of my head that I could quickly smash together another 100 year war army. I ended up building a warlord, ten knights on barded horses, six foot knights and 16 infantry. This force will also inherit 16 mounted soldiers from the Spanish, as the Perry sculpts I used don't match all the 3D prints I've been adding.

Probably run these as Brittany in SAGA, any suggestion for a cool scheme? I don't quite fancy ermine, but perhaps the inverted ermines?
-
In between kitbashing all those Perry figures, I also managed to finish some Castillian knights. These are Reconquer designs lovely figures, including the Henry Trastamara figure. I got the version without sculpted heraldry so he could be a generic noble.
One of the knights is less heavily armoured in a gambesson, and I ended up with two copies of this body plus two horses sans caparison (thanks to Studio Historia for sending me more figures than I had ordered), so these can nicely represent lesser nobles. In SAGA terms, they can join my warrior units, or as in the last picture, the four Claymore knights also riding unbarded horses, to represent the mercenary unit "Foreign Men At Arms" from the Age of Chivalry book. They are a sort on in between hearthguard and warrior.

Love them. :-*

First Lithuanian unit finished. A point of bow levy kitbashed from Wargames Atlantic Goths plus Victrix late romans and rus. I also added a 3D print, a Samogitan Huntsman by Black Knight miniatures.
Painted using only the paints in the new Army Painter John Blance sets. I've not gone for a grimdark style, but quite enjoyed the challenge of a limited palette.
Technically not quite finished, as I need to add snow to bases. I will do that in a larger batch later, or it wastes a lot of material.

Very effective, superb.
-
Nice looking unit - looking forward to seeing more
-
Second set of Lithuanians finished. These are Lithuanian Warriors by Black Knight miniatures, 3D printed. Will use as Warriors in SAGA.
Again painted with a limited palette using the John Blance paint sets. I allowed myself a skin tone in addition, as it seemed like such a waste of paint to constantly be mixing up an exact shade that I already had in a bottle.
I am considering also allowing myself a brighter silver to highlight the armour, but then they will look quite sinister and intimidating like this.

Really nice Lithuanians Ogrob!! The dark metal certainly suits them.
As for your Brittany warband, Wappen wiki has several different heraldries you could use. After all it's a warband, not always the Duke himself. [url]https://wappenwiki.org/index.php/Duchy_of_Brittany[url]
-
Thank you, very useful!
-
Are the barded horses Frieforge with Perry heads?
-
Yes. The heads are pretty easy to fit, but the riders a little trickier. I cut down the saddles, bent the rider legs into place and then used plasticard to make a basic saddle.

Last weekend I travelled down to Lund for my biggest saga tournament yet, the SAGA World Cup. 48 players in 12 teams was a little bit bigger than my previous record of six :D
I was captain of the quite casual Team Sweden. The Lund players have more tournament experience, but were hosting. We just managed to assemble a team of four from Gothenburg and headed down with no ambitions. Three of us played almost completely new factions. I fielded my Polish that you have seen in this thread.
Over the course of the weekend we played one of the German teams, a Polish team and the Austrians, Hungarians and Portuguese.
I went 2-3 over the weekend, with wins against Spanish and Ordenstaat on the Sacred Ground scenario. This revolves around holding three pieces of terrain on the centre line, and the Polish are very capable of winning a punchup in the middle. I lost to Pagan People, again on Sacred Ground, and Saracens in Old Feud. In both of these games I've been able to identify mistakes in planning and execution that if fixed could have lead to a different game. I'm happy with these as learning opportunities.
I was also destroyed by Mongols in Tale of Challenges. They are absolutely terrifying in a scenario that does not require them to hold fixed positions. I had essentially no chance. The mongol player obliterated every opponent he faced over the weekend, so I suppose I can't be too unhappy, but I do think the faction needs another look in the next FAQ.

And a tiny bit of hobby today. I received some 3D printed figures by Medbury Miniatures, printed by Direforge in Spain. The minis are Medbury's Scottish Hobelars, and look very very nice. Sculpts are crisp and characterful. Perfect for mounted Warriors in Age of Chivalry. Prints are also nice and clean, but I did have one misprint that I feel the seller should have caught. Still, a minor issue.
3D printed spears are always terrible, so I spent some time replacing them with metal hafts, or just swapped for some plastic hands with maces and an axe from Victrix normans.

Congratulations to your two wins! Sounds like a tournament with joy and lessons you have learnt :)
The scotish hobelars are nice, looking forward to see them painted. I thought that Medbury is also doing them in metal or did you want them to be in resin? I also thought you would go for a spanish faction for your Age of Chivalry warband, so I was a bit surprised, might have missed some info bits though o_o

Thank you!
On the resin: as an EU resident, I have to pay import VAT and handling fees on non-EU orders. I will try an order from Medbury at some point, but I probably want it to be around 100 pounds to minimize the impact of the handling fees on prize per miniature. Direforge, which I ordered from, seem to use a very nice resin with good detail. I even dropped a figure on the floor with no damage.
On the choice of figure, there are two things. One, I need quite a lot of light cavalry, especially for playing Castille. I want my figures to match decently in size and style with my Claymore figures and my other 3D prints. The Perry horses I have are honestly too big and look silly next to the Reconquer and Ezipion knights. There is nothing on these figures that scream Scottish, they could just as well be French, and therefor just as well be northern Spanish without Muslim influence. Hopefully Reconquer will release some Spanish light cavalry at some point soon though, so I can add some.
Second, the army is morphing more into a generic 14th century army with a bit of a Spanish theme. I have a lot of figures already that Castille can't legally use. I am perfectly happy using these figures for other factions as red and yellow is pretty common.

Yes, I forgot about the import from the UK, was only thinking of the material. I feel you as a fellow EU resident. Everytime someone suggests a new company here and I look it up I cry silently in agony when I see that the company is sitting again in the UK :'(

I've been eyeing these minis myself for my planned AoCh Scottish schiltron warband. They won't be played in every game, but it's always good to have the option during deployment.
Last year I ordered metal Medbury Vendel minis to field as AoI Saxon HG. The sculpts and casting quality are excellent, but compared to Victrix, Footsore's older ranges, and Gripping Beast, the Medbury Vendels are puny, even for historicals. To me they look closer to 25mm scale than 28mm. They are not just shorter than these other lines, its that they look so skinny and have small heads. I suppose that they would scale well against GW's LotR model line, but against Victrix and others, Medbury's metals look like 12 year old boys.
You likely dodged a bullet by having them printed.
With regards to scale, how do your printed hobilars compare to mounted Victrix minis? If they scale well, do you know if the printer increased the size of the prints?

Ok, here we are with some size discussion. I have so far not asked any printers to rescale anything, but bought default sizes. The size of these Medbury scottish seems consistent with Medbury vendels I have from a different printer, so I had assumed that they are default scale.
Medbury next to a Reconquer knight printer by Studio Historia. The reconquer horse is probably the smallest I own. Strangely I have some Reconquer light cav printer by Stronghold Terrain, and they look to have a little bigger horses than this:

Thanks for this.

And back to the Baltics we go.
I finished this chonky boy, the Lithuanian Warlord by Black Knight miniatures. I gave him a tear drop shield, as I plan to use that shape for the Pagan People part of the army, and keep the lithuanian pavises for the Eastern Princes part of the force.
I also finished these Crusaders on foot by Stronghold Terrain (I guess Brother Vinni again, these are metal and sold under ST's name). I imagine these as some sort of Swedish adventurers or mercenaries. These use the John Blanche paints heavily, but not exclusively. Could be used as Western Knight mercenaries in SAGA for example.

I do share your love for the old tactical rock! In fact, i often have to consciously avoid adding them I have so many command bases composed that way! lol
-
Really lovely warlord, a nice job!
-
Speaking of tactical rocks, here is a foot Warlord on one. This is a Victrix kitbash, body from the Viking command sprue with head and sword from the Rus. The shield is the same metal shield I used for the mounted Warlord on last page.
And another unit of Black Knight 3D prints, his Samogitan Axemen. Eastern Princes lithuanians have access to heavy weapon warriors, so perfect for those. They can also serve as Borderer mercenaries, which can be good with the Pagan People board.

Very nice work. The guy front and center in the second picture looks like a medieval version of Lord Humungus from The Road Warrior.
-
Little bit more progress this weekend. Managed to finish the wagon that I showed earlier. One of the more unique features of the Eastern Princes faction is their ability to bring a supply wagon into battle. I am not sure how good it is, but for now it is a half point unit that generated SAGA dice, which can be good in itself. Based on wagon rules in Age of Chivalry, I suspect it might be nerfed in the future. Still, a fun modelling opportunity.

Finished the third and final warlord for the Lithuanians. This will be the warlord figure for the Eastern Princes faction, as they can only field a mounted warlord, and he doesn't get javelins. Bit of a kitbash: a 3D printer Slavic mercenary commander by Reconquer designs, but on a Perry medieval horse, holding a plastic lance from a Perry kit as well, but with a 3D printed flag from Black Knight miniatures Lithuanian Nobles. A lithuanian pavise shield nicked from the previously posted mounted warlord, also by Black Knight.

Only piece to be constructive on is that the poor dog is quite well camouflaged into the base. But that might just be in the photos.

That's a centerpiece for the warband for sure! Impressive miniature! :-*
-
Thank you both! You're quite right about the dog LazyStudent, I'll think about going back and adding some brighter tones to it.
-
Getting some work done every weekend. This time, a decent size group of Hearthguard with Heavy Weapons. These will come in handy for the Pagan People, where they can effectively teleport between forests.
Figures are simply Victrix Rus and a few bodies from the Viking command sprue.

They look great! You?re really cranking units out, really nice work :)
-
Another little delivery of 3D prints arrived today, this time from Stronghold Terrain.
The main reason for my order is these men-at-arms on foot by Reconquer Designs. I went with the open face option on these, Reconquer does them with visors down too. I will use them as Foreign Men at Arms, a mercenary unit in Age of Chivalry. They are warrior quality troops with hearthguard level armour, so having their faces showing is a nice way to differentiate them from most of my foot men at arms as they tend to wear visors down or great helms.
And then another set I had been eying for a while, Reconquer's slavic heavy infantry. These are part of a release of heavy moor infantry and intended as mercenaries. They will join my Lithuanians instead. I gave two of them swords by Black Knight, a bit chunkier, to match my earlier Lithuanian infantry. Hopefully I also have enough pavises to equip them with that.

Those are very nice figures. Looking forward to seeing them painted up.

Got completely side tracked. I am going to be demoing some SAGA at a local convention in a couple of weeks with a friend. We had been planning Age of Vikings and Age of Chivalry, with the classic Anglo-Dane vs Vikings matchup, plus French versus English for Chivalry. However, after a few games with them we've come to the conclusion that the English are a bit tricky to play and the French if given mounted knights can probably wipe out several points worth right from the start of turn 1 if deployment is not done well. So had to rethink that plan. Still want to demo AoCh, but perhaps a more even matchup. I also don't really want to risk my 3D prints at an open demo convention.
So to that end, some inventory was done in the sprue pile, and I turned up several sprues worth of Perry WotR english, European Mercenaries and late 15th century men at arms. I set to building, and this was the result:
A point of men at arms in full harness, two points of warriors (english bill, but surely they can be continental too, and the two pikes will be banners)
And then while I was at it, I used a load of arms from the Agincourt knights set to kitbash a point of more skirmishing warriors too:
For the demo, I will probably use the scottish in France option for these, but in the end I think I want this collection to represent several continental factions, such as HRE, Hussites, Condottiere and perhaps even Swiss. To that end, I will need a bunch of pikes, some pavise and some crossbows, plus cavalry of course. That will all come later.
Any suggestions for a nice colour scheme? I prefer to keep one "army" in one scheme, rather than a perhaps more historical approach of different retinues or companies. Considering a black and gold scheme.
-
Hurray lol
-
Had the weekend to myself, so managed to finish these Lithuanian Nobles as well. 3D prints by Black Knight miniatures in case I hadn't mentioned before. I still have four of these left to paint, including a pair of more leader-looking fellows, a banner and a hornblower.
Should have enough painted now to try out the Lithuanians in SAGA, but not sure when I will have time. Need to soldier on with the Perry plastics to get redo for convention demos.

They look wonderful. A nice warm image.
-
Bouncing between projects here, but I will try to stay on Age of Chivalry until the Easter weekend when the demo games are happening.
Last post on building Perry plastics was scrounging from whatever I had left from old projects, mostly Sludge kitbashes. I ordered another pair of kits, one War of the Roses English and one European Mercenaries, and started building out the force the other day. For the demo game, I just need a leader, four knights, two more billmen and some archers, but for the whole 15th century project I am planning on building a lot more. These boxes should in fact give me all the infantry I need.
From the 72 infantry bodies (+1 spare on the old sprues) in the two kits I plan to build the following:
18 pikes
6 bill
12 crossbow
12 bow
8 handgun
2 banners, 2 musicians
12 pavisiers (spears+pavise, will need kitbashing)
With some banners and commanders I can field up to 24 warriors with pikes or regular equipment, plus the pavisier option tends to be limited to max one unit for most factions anyway, so I will have plenty of the for SAGA very important warrior class troops.
So with that plan in mind, I had a bit of a build session today and assembled the following:
Warlord (European mercs commander with a head from the mounted men at arms), plus the six additional billmen to bring me to 20.
A banner bearer for the warlord, they will share a sabot base, and four additional knights (aka hearthguard in SAGA) on foot. Decided to use all four barbute helmets from the European kit, as I love how they look.
And finally 12 bowmen. I need these for the demo, but don't imagine they will see much play otherwise. Most factions rely on crossbow levy. I might use them as English archer mercenaries. I used some heads from Oathmark light human infantry for these as I didn't want any helmets for the levy.
What do you think?
-
Nice kitbashes and good use of the different sprues. Certainly makes an interesting set of figures.
-
Chugging along with building the infantry for this force. Only pikes, pavises and command figures to go now.
I quite enjoyed the Oathmark heads on the bow levy, so did the same thing for the crossbow unit. Stuck to the less armoured bodies on these as well to further reinforce their peasant status.
Handgunners however are Warrior-class mercenaries, so these fellows have proper helmets plus swords and bucklers ready to fend off any attacker.
-
It is a really well working kitbash, a good idea with the Oathmark heads on the levy! How big are the Oathmark heads compared to Victrix sets?
-

These are from the Light Infantry set, very close in size, perhaps a smidge bigger but also with a bit better definition in the details.
-
And another little kitbash. Victrix arms on Perry bodies to make melee pavisiers (I know this is a debated question, but the SAGA authors have gone with pavises on melee troops to a greater extent than crossbows). Fortunately a spear is a spear, so the dark age weaponry shouldn't be too obvious on the figures.

-
These are so great kit bashes - shows the versatility of the Perry figures with some different arms or heads it really can change the look of them
-
Thank you fred!
In between building all the infantry I could possibly think of, I did manage some painting. In fact, I am nearly done with the demo force, which is a good thing since the convention is less than 10 days out.
For the colour scheme, I went with a green and yellow scheme. Not going for any particular historical heraldry, just something that looks nice. I prefer to paint a uniform paint scheme over a multitude of colours, so I will go with variations of green and yellow across the whole force. There is a lovely dark green and a warm yellow in the Army Painter John Blanche sets, and they figure heavily here. Unlike the Lithuanians, I am allowing myself to use other colours as well.
I finished these 20 warriors with standard equipment - aka billmen.
Plus four hearthguard with standard equipment - aka men at arms on foot.
I also bashed together some command figures, these will allow me to flexibly change the size of warrior units regardless of equipment.

I think they look great! The yellow and green palette works well and I like the variety in the unit. It looks battle worn to me.
-
Really good work
-
Well Done. They look great.
-
The yellow scheme looks brilliant- almost puts me in the mind of Averland from WFB. Absolutely love the halved helmets on the men at arms, it looks awesome :)

They ended up scratching an old Empire itch for sure. Not intentional, but a happy coincidence.
-
Nice job, lovely colour scheme!
-
Steady progress, which is a good thing since the convention is only a week out. I have in fact managed to finish the 4 point force to demo with.
I freehanded a banner for the warlord, which I am quite happy with. They are on a sabot base, and I also have a 40mm sabot that can take just the warlord figure.
And the bow levy. Really pleased with these and how the head swaps worked. For these I did both the green and yellow a little bit more muted, with olive tones for the green highlights and mixing ochre into the yellow.
And then another kit arrived, some Light Cavalry. I had a long think about how to build everything I wanted and how many kits I needed. Fortunately I found four old light cavalry in my projects box, two of them still on sprue, and two half started (look them up in my Game of Thrones thread ;) ). The later needed new arms and heads to be servicable. With these four extra, three boxes will give me everything I need.
I built six warriors on horse. I will use as many of the scandinavian kettle helms as I can, just for the local connection
(https://i.imgur.com/GSgd9AM.jpg)
And then two test figures for the mercenary unit Lombard Lancers. These present a little conundrum, as they are Warrior-class, but with elite armour and barded horses. I need them to be visually distinct from my hearthguard, so I don't want to just use Perry men at arms for them. My plan is as follows: The slightly armoured horse heads rather than the fully armoured ones, no plumes. Light cavalry bodies, and the heads with the Italian turbans. All in all, this should make them quite distinct. I may also paint their armour forge-blackened rather than polished steel.

Making the most of a week of Easter holiday, and have managed to finish another three units and build the last infantry for this force. Just waiting on cavalry boxes to arrive to finish everything.
First, the Brutal Barbute squad. A point of regular Hearthguard on foot. These use mostly bits from the two command sprues (Europeans and WotR infantry) plus one body from the foot Men at Arms sprue.
Second, a unit of Brigand mercenaries. I built these just intending them as more warriors, but compared to the Billmen I feel the perfectly capture the skirmishing nature of the Brigand mercenaries. They struggle with heavily armoured opponents, but excel at bringing down a fatigued target. I painted these in a more muted version of the colour scheme, with olive and dark ochre.
And another mercenary unit, the Foreign Men at Arms. I think I mentioned earlier, but just like the Lombard Lancers these are Warrior-class figures, but with elite armour stat. How to make them stand out from regular hearthguard on foot? I've gone for different helmets, with open faces, lighter armaments with just swords, plus a different colour scheme with forge-blackened armour and a scheme that leans heavier on the green with just a yellow accent on the chests.
Finally, I've cleared out my infantry sprues and built a block of 20 pike. With the command figures earlier I can stretch this to 24, which should be plenty for several factions. That means I've built all the infantry I have planned for now. Depending on what comes up in play, I may want to go back and add more pike and/or more crossbows so I could see getting another European Mercenaries box.

Thank you, but I think my game will not be the most visual. A small 4-point demo, 33 figures per side, with fairly minimal terrain. I'll try and take some pictures of the other games put on by our club, there should be some pretty cool terrain on display.
-
Me thinks your warlord should be called Jordan Love! 😉
-
The Levy, swords men, harth guard, men at arms and command stand all look great! 😁
-
All looking fantastic! huge props to you for building and painting it all so quickly :)
-
Thanks fellas! More to come, Easter is normally a productive time as I get a nice long holiday off work.
-
Another little build update. Managed to get hold of a couple of boxes of Perry cavalry, both heavy and light. Spent some time today finishing a pair of mercenary units.
First up are the Lombard Lancers. I already mentioned these I believe, but they are Warrior-class but with elite armour and barded horses. In order to tell them apart from regular mounted men-at-arms (hearthguard in SAGA terms), I settled on the following: light cavalry bodies but with barded horses, and heads with the very italian barbute and turban combo. Their horses also have the plainer head armour, while the true elites will have fancy plumed and armoured horse heads.
And then the Foreign Men at Arms in their mounted version. Again, warrior-class but with improved armour. For these, I've gone for men-at-arms bodies, but completely unarmoured horses. I also used all the bodies I had with jupons plus helmets with visible faces. Finally, like their foot version, they have a little lighter armament as most of my cavalry will be holding lances.

I like these additions, you have been able to have a theme with each group, whilst keeping the individual models different.
-
Thank you!
Another little bit finished today. A few banners and musicians that can be used to extend the 20 billmen or 20 pike into two units of 12 if I need the strength.
And a unit of 12 pavisiers. Most factions are limited to one unit of these so don't need as many as the pikes or bills.

Cool! Where did you source the spear arms?

Victrix, mostly the Rus and Late Roman sets as they have more full length arms.

Final day of Easter holidays. I ended up not running any demo games as I've been dealing with a cold for the whole week. Just bad enough to not want to talk to anyone, but mild enough to carry on with hobby.
Finished the Handgunner mercenaries. They get blackened steel armour which will be a bit of a signum for mercenary units. As Warriors, they also carry swords and bucklers to signal that they can put up a fight in melee.
And some levy crossbows. Muted colour scheme and Oathmark heads like the bow levy posted earlier.
And slogging on with assembling cavalry. I've done 50 of the 64 planned now.
Eight mounted men-at-arms, with some Barbute heads from the European Mercenaries. Two of them stolen from previous projects, hence the paint remnant on there.
Eight mounted warriors - using lots of kettle helms for these as I love the look. I quite enjoy that the Perrys in the light cavalry kit suddenly have a reference to scandinavian troops, completely absent from their other kits.
Eight more, using some Victrix arms to make really light looking cavalry. In the back row, two future banner bearers using Oathmark arms.
And finally another mercenary unit, Mounted Crossbowmen.

Oops, guess I forgot to post this mounted warlord conversion. I cut the torso off the same body I used for the foot warlord, and used some greenstuff to extend the coat over his hips. Some horse armour from the Agincourt set for this version, but I will also build a version with plate barding later.

Victrix, mostly the Rus and Late Roman sets as they have more full length arms.
Thanks

Great looking cav, and dig the infantry mercenaries
-
Fantastic cav! Love the conversions as always.
-
Thanks guys!
Speaking of cavalry, here are the Lombard Lancers completed:
And a bonus Knight on foot. This is a hero mercenary with some fun abilities. I gave him some fancier black armour to distinguish him from my other men at arms on foot.

Blackened armour looks sick! The lancers are awesome as well :)

The high contrast between the bright yellow and the blackened armour is great!
It is a classic contrast. i used it on my Francesco Gonzaga vignette (in 2011???);

-
Thanks everyone! I had considered a black and yellow scheme for this force first, before settling on the yellow and green. Nice to hark back to that with the black armour on mercenaries.
-
Now, did I really need more kits for this army? Maybe not, but I couldn't resist picking up another set of European Mercenaries. I'll get back to what I am planning to do with those, but for now I built another four men-at-arms (hearthguard in SAGA terms) with barded horses. These all use the lovely barbute helms from the European Mercenaries command frame.
As I've been building my heavy cavalry, I decided that there was not enough variation in poses with the lances. Only one of the three bodies I use even has a matching arm with couched lance, the other couched lance on the sprue is for the bodies with livery coats, and I used those in a whole nother unit. So I want back and changed all my heavy cavalry to wielding hand weapons, giving much greater variety in poses.
Here is the whole set of barded heavy cav:
And then I quite quickly finished the other mercenary cavalry unit, the Foreign Men-at-arms. These were painted to match their foot versions which I posted earlier. A quick job, just some speed paints for the horses, but turned out pretty good I think.

You are doing a great job! There are a lot of inspirations which can get picked up at your thread. And the high pace of your work is astounding o_o
-
Thank you!
Bit of a milestone today, I finished building the last of my cavalry figures! I now have everything built from the initial plan, and plenty to play with. I think I will try to hold off on building the last set of European Mercenaries, and try to play a bit and explore what I want to do with them before comitting.
Last eight Light Cavalry, two with Victrix arms, a hornblower with an Oathmark head, and five regular light lancers. Some of the heads are from the European Mercenaries command frame as well.
And then my mounted Warlord with barded horse. Same conversion as the regular mounted version.
To show you just how much cavalry I ended up with, I had to clear out a whole shelf for just cavalry as there were too many horses to share space with the infantry:
-
Looks badass! Great conversions as always, looking forward to seeing them painted.
-
With Easter holidays over, progress has slowed but not stopped. Managed to finish the bases on the mounted warlord and hearthguard today.
Even though they do not have the barded rule, I have gone with a bit of armour on these horses just so that at a glance you can tell them apart from any Warrior class figures. When I get around to painting the elites with plate barding, I will probably do the barding in green and yellow, again to help differentiate figures from each other.
-
They look rather nice - the green and yellow colour scheme is very effective
-
As said, pace slowed a bit and this next unit was the fiddliest so far to paint. Mounted crossbows built pretty much straight from the Perry light cavalry set, maybe some European Mercenary heads. In SAGA terms, this is a Mercenary unit, so most of them have got the solid green jackets and cheaper blackened armour that most of my merc units have.

Apologies if this gets a little bit long and rambly. The plan is to talk a little bit about a tournament I hosted yesterday, then another little rant about the state of my 14th century Castillian force, and finally a little painting update on said army.
Yesterday I ran the fourth iteration of our club SAGA tournament, which we call the Holmgang. This time around we went with Age of Crusades and Age of Chivalry, as Chivalry is the newest book and most of us want to try it. It pairs relatively well with Age of Crusades, so allows players to participate even if they did not have Chivalry armies done yet.
We managed to gather six players for this one, which is the best so far. Five Age of Chivalry players and one Age of Crusades - 2 Germans, 1 French, 1 English, 1 Condottieri (me) and 1 Milites Christi.
I played the Florence version of Condottieri . I had one pratice game before the tournament and quite enjoyed them. I won't go into detail on the games here, but in short I beat the Milites Christi by out-gridning them and managing to snag an objective halfway through the game and sit on it. I then lost to the Germans - I made a tactical blunder early and threw away a unit, and then we had a very even grind for a long time. Eventually the germans broke my line and the game was over. Finally I drew with the french. He nearly ran me over completely with some insanely hard charges (very french, he brought only knights in his list) but as the units grew fatigued I managed to claw it back and we ended in a drew with almost nothing on the field.
Now, about the Castillian force. If you have been following this thread you know I have had a lot of Claymore Castings figure for a long time. I started gathering and painting some of these as soon as Age of Chivalry was announced, without really knowing what was coming in the book. I grabbed whatever figures I had at the time and started painting with some enthusiasm and no plan, and I think that lack of planning has come back to bite me a little bit.
See, I am not very happy with a lot of the figures I have. I started with the plan of stripping down the Claymore figures I had at home, and supplementing them with Perry. First issue arose in the stripping, in that I didn't do a very good job. Looking at the repainted minis now, they are lumpy and bumpy as they have paint stuck in a lot of recesses.
Second issue is that several 3D designers especially started releasing very nice looking figures for the 14th century. I don't 3D print myself, but with brexit and customs fees making orders from UK companies prohibite, buying 3D-printed resin is starting to be the second best choice for minis after hard plastic kits from large enough companies that I don't have to deal with additional fees and customs myself. Problem is, a lot of these 3D printed figures do not match Perry very well. Horses are smaller, kit is clearly from an older period.
So, where does that leave us? Essentially here, this is the state of my Castillian army after I remove the figures I am dissatisfied with:
My intention is to continue to fill this up with resin figures. I took advantage of a sale at Studio Historia, so more should drop in by mid to late summer. The army will be almost all 3D prints, with maybe some cast resin from V&V and if I have enough things I want from Claymore I may buy some more metals. I am also not sure yet what I want to play them as, but perhaps Castille or Brittany (Bertrand de Guesclin fought in the Castillian Civil War, so fits with the theme). I feel thematically they could also be French or English (mercenaries/allies for either side) but having seen them both in action they are quite one-sided. The English are quite weak in SAGA, the French are strong but if the charge fails to win the day, you will be ground down. We'll see. There is always the Free Company list, which I have played and enjoyed.
Anyway, stark contrast between this mess and my well-planned late 15th century Perry force. Speaking of Perry, what happened to the Perry agincourt figures that got kicked out of Castille? Well, they come together with some other old or odd projects to form quite a tidy little loaner army:
You can see some of the Breton knights I built this year, some Castillians, some old Game of Thrones figures and other odds and ends. Not all of it is completely painted, but it will form a nice selection for me to offer out for demo games.
Finally, I promised a painting update. Taking a little break from painting green cavalry, I managed to finish these Scottish Hobelar figures from Medbury. To me they will work just fine as generic light cavalry in any 14the century European force. They lack some of the unique features of Spanish Jinetes, but Reconquer did just release some of those, so there might be more light cavalry coming.
And my favourite sculpt of the group:
What is next in this meandering medieval thread? Well, the SAGA Thorsday podcast is running a challenge to finish warbands over the summer, so I think I will aim to finish the green and yellow army. I have some piked, some knights and a lot of light cavalry to get done there.
So, if you made it this far, what do you think of it all?
-
Looks like some mixed results with your Condottieri, giving you some more insights at that advantages and disadvantages. Otherwise it reads like an enjoyable event :)
And don't badtalk your older miniatures and painting so much. Yes, it was quite a mix you threw in here which made me sometimes wondering about the broad range. And you are probably the only one who was able to even take such a look at them to compare them to each other in more detail. It's normal that some are then not going to be seen in the same good light as at the beginning of your tour. In aftersight there is always something which could have been done better but that's the journey at this hobby, you simply improve with time.
For us however you created plenty of various troops with a really nice painting scheme within a really short time frame. Pumping out armies like most of us would wish to be able to do. Not sure how many of your posts I have bookmarked to take some inspiration from little details you did.
Having them at little demo games without the constant fear that someone breaks one of your most lovely painted figure is a good choice for them. There will surely be people being happy to field them into battle :)
-
Looks great! I have to agree that the leap 3d printed miniatures have taken recently is incredible- I don't think there was anything like this level of quality widely avaliable five or six years ago. Looking forward to seeing where you take the collection next, and congrats on hosting the tournament :)
-
it all looks great to me. :-*
-
Second attempt at posting this, having a lot of issues connecting to the forum at the moment.
Foot men-at-arms by Reconquer Designs. Part of his 14th century collection. If you haven't seen his work, some of the absolute best 3D print designs you can get.
These will also be Foreign men-at-arms, the mercenary unit in Age of Chivalry. To tell them apart from my regular foot knights, they have open helmets and a mostly red colour scheme.
What do you think?
-
They look great! Love the stripe across the shield as well, adds visual interest without detracting from the model. And thanks for mentioning Reconquer, hadn't heard of the manufacturer before :)
-
Thank you! I have a big order of Reconquer's recent sculpts coming from Studio Historia, so you will see more for sure.
-
great looking knights/man at arms.
Your not the only one having issues if you see in the "about forum" section.
-
And here we return to the late 15th century. The SAGA Thorsday Discord channel is running a "finish your warband" challenge for the summer, so I decided to get my green-an-yellows done.
For this army, what I have left to paint is 24 light cavalry (some which have been started), 8 men-at-arms on barded horses, a Warlord on barded horse, and 20 pike. I think I may add some more pike to this as I have figures left on sprues.
I managed to finish the first unit of light cavalry today. Some of these are kitbashed with some Victrix arms to make spear-equipped coustillers. Apparently this is a more Burgundian style of light cavalry. Otherwise I have used a lot of the helmets that the Perrys identify as Scandinavian, so perhaps they are a little geographically confused. Interestingly two of these horses were painted more than 5 years ago for my game of thrones project.
-
Great work as always! Looking forward to seeing those pikemen painted, I'm sure they'll be very impressive indeed all together.
-
I decided to try to complete the heavy cavalry during June as well, as I thought they'd ne nice and quick to paint up. Then the plan is pikes in July and finish any remaining light cavalry in August.
I'll be travelling to family for the second half of the month, so the heavy cavalry were on a bit of a tight deadline, but I managed to get them done:
What do you think?

Oh that coloured barding is nice!
I’m going to steal that, sorry, can’t help myself😀
-
Thank you, go for it!
-
While I have pledged to complete my 15th century Perry figures this summer, I ended up making time to complete another set of warrior figures for my Lithuanian force. 12 of these are Lithuanian Axemen by Black Knight miniatures, and the other four are Slavic heavy infantry by Reconquer designs. I used swords and shields from Black Knight so the Reconquer figures would match my Black Knight figures a little better.
-
Vert striking. Well done
-
So as I was planning for a last game before my most regular opponent heads out of town for a few weeks, I happened to read some discussion on the Neopolitan subfaction for the Condotierri in SAGA Age of Chivalry. I have been using my green and yellow Perry figures mostly to play the Florence subfaction, which get pavisiers and the quite strong for SAGA melee weapon levy. The Neopolitans however get the incredibly rare levy on horses, and with a special rule that gives them additional attacks on the charge. I had initially dismissed this as a bit of a meme unit, but it seems I was mistaken. I decided to try them out, and seeing as I have a lot of free time at the moment I also decided that meant painting up all my remaining Perry light cavalry. In 48 hours. For one game, just to try out a unit choice....
Said and done, here they are:
A bit rushed here and there, but honestly I am running out of steam on this project and am happy to have them done.
-
They look good! How'd they perform in the game?
-
Pretty solid, though as a faction the Neopolitans are a little tricky to get to grips with. Very solid cavalry, but a distinct lack of options for dealing with enemies in terrain.
-
Hopping back and forth here between the armies, we return to the Age of Chivalry Spanish who will be getting a host of 3D printed reinforcements.
These are Reconquer Design's spanish hearthguard with dane axes or glaives, so more accurately a 12th or early 13th century offering, but I will use them as Gallowglass mercenaries for Age of Chivalry. I'm just not a fan of any Gallowglass figures out there, plus as already discussed, ordering metal figures from small British manufacturers is too costly unless I am ordering a whole army worth.
These will fit in well stylistically with the rest of the Reconquer sculpts that I already have. Plus, RD sculptor keeps showing new cool Spanish sculpts so I am sure there will be a lot more coming.
-
Great stuff! They fit the Gallowglass aesthetic well, nice thinking there.
-
My 14th century Spanish have been a very organic project for sure, with a lot of "ooh shiny" influencing what I buy and paint. Far less planned than the 15th century project that had a planning document from the get go. I've discussed remaking several units for this army previously, and this post will be a little bit of a look at what I have currently. You will see that it is quite an unbalanced selection of figures :D
The catalyst of this whole post and me spending some time taking new photos was this gathering of foot knights. I am already working on a few more, and this is simply a ridiculous number that will never be needed in SAGA:
I then decided to break them down by manufacturer. It turned out that the foot knight collection still has a lot of Claymore Castings metals:
But has been reinforced by 3D prints, these from Ezipion Miniatures - his Late Crusaders on foot, Radu of Wallachia and a Lay Knight on foot:
And some of the newer reinforcements, these Foot Knights by Reconquer Design. The hero is by RD as well, but sold by Stronghold Terrain under their brand, in their Camino de Santiago set:
And then we move to the mounted knights, which are now all 3D prints. These are Reconquer figures, plus the same Camino de Santiago character mounted. The two on the far right in gambessons will be fielded as mounted Warriors rather than hearthguard, poorer Hidalgos in less splendid armour:
Then the mounted versions of the Ezipion figures - Late Crusaders and Radu of Wallachia. When I took this photo I felt their yellow was very desaturated and dull compared to everyone else, so I went over the figures and highlighted their yellows with Army Painter Moonbeam Yellow which I have been using a lot since picking it up with the John Blanche sets.
Before:
After:
Then another Claymore holdout, a unit of Pavisiers:
And the surviving Claymore Knights - as these are on horses sans caparisons I think I will repaint their shields to the red with yellow beam design and use them as Foreign Men at Arms mercenaries.
Then my Medbury Miniatures Hobelars - the latest unit finished for this army (not counting the Gallowglass above). Didn't bother with a new picture here:
As you can see, a lot of knights, but a distinct lack of infantry and ranged troops.
-
Really impressive collection, especially considering the detailed paintjobs on each model- the freehand shields are excellent. And nice to see metal sculpts and 3d printed minis coexisting too! Proof that the latter doesn't have to replace the former, but can supplement an existing collection.
Looking forward to seeing where you take the project from here!
-
Thank you! For sure all mediums can coexist, for me it's more important that general proportions are roughly similar. I am pretty sure Medbury intentionally match Claymore quite well.
-
Wonderful painting and I love the thematic photos.
-
Quite impressive that you picked the two colours that are the most difficult to paint with
-
Thank you! I have tried several recipes for both colours through this project, as it has been a long-running one. I've now found some things that work quite well. I've mentioned the John Blanche colours from Army Painter before, and they are coming to good use for both the red and yellow now. For the red, over a white primer, I use Army Painter Fanatic Fiery Vermillion, then Bloodmoon Red speedpaint, and re-establish highlights with the Fiery Vermillion. For the yellow, again over white, I start with AP Fanatic Sunburst Ochre as a base, and then build up with layers or mixing to Moonbeam Yellow. Most of the time I do a sort of brown/sepia wash as well with Moonbeam Yellow to establish final highlihts after.
-
great colours...
-
We've had a heatwave for the last few weeks, so I found it hard to paint much, but I did finally manage to finish two sets from V&V miniatures. These are their English Infantry and French Knights, but painted of course for the Spanish-themed 14th century force. Hopefully they will get along despite their origins....
I already had two V&V french knights painted in this scheme, who did not get a group photo last page. You might find them in the big group of foot knights though. For completness, here are all the V&V knights:
And finally I also painted up this lovely sculpt from Claymore Castings. I had stripped it earlier but never got around to painting it:
What do you think?
-
Love it! That Claymore sculpt is gorgeous, very dynamic- and your paintscheme looks great on it.
-
Nice! Great looking minis those and nice paint job.
-
One more and then it looks like I am heading back to Lithuania for a bit before I have more additions for Age of Chivalry.
So this is a pack of levy archers. I have a decent amount of English Longbowmen from Claymore, but it feels a bit silly to use those figures as bow levy in Saga. I think I mentioned that I prefer the Breton battleboard to the Castillian. Both have a similar mobile play style, but Castille feels undercooked. They also lack access to foot knights and warriors, which can cause issues with terrain. The Bretons however only get bow levy, no crossbows, and you do really want some shooting.
To that end I purchased a set of Reconquer archers from Stronghold Terrain. They do a 12-man unit ideal for SAGA, I think pulled from a few different sets that Reconquer has labeled Spanish levy. Technically, they are more 12th or 13th century than 14th, but I think this is fine for a bunch of peasants with hunting bows. The one guy with a helmet surely dug out an heirloom from his great grandfather.
I decided to give these a bit more muted version of the red and yellow scheme too.
What do you think?

Nice.
-
Very nice. Quite like how you deepened the colours to make them look distinct
-
Agree with all the others - very nice. I do especially like the way the archers turned out.
-
Very nice! Good to have some more chaff to go alongside that mountain of knights :D
-
Thanks everyone! Quite happy with how the muted colour scheme worked on the archers, I think it's a good way to go with still having them match the army but not be unreasonably bright for what is really just peasants. For sure I have far too many knights and not enough chaff, especially for SAGA. Will be looking to expand this force with some infantry, some crossbows and some more light cavalry. Only issue is Reconquer keeps sculpting cool knights that I want...
-
I'd always wondered what those Reconquer archers looked like. Solid work, they fit your guys very well and the colours are great.
-
Thank you!
As temperatures have continued to cooperate through the week, I also managed to finish another Lithuanian unit. These are also V&V, their Mounted Rus Warriors pack. I just kind of like how the look, so they will join my Black Knight 3D prints as Lithuanian hearthguard. Having worked on other projects for most of the summer, it is a little strange to go back to the limited palette on these.

What do you think?
-
For the SAGA Thorsday warband challenge I had opted to finish my Perry late 15th century force. In June I painted the barded version of the Warlord and his knights, plus a first 8 light cavalry. In July I finished the remaining 16 light cavalry. That left only pikemen to finish in August, and here they are completed. All the painting was done earlier in July to be fair, but I did the basing now.
And with that, the green and yellow army is complete as originally planned. I think later I will try and take a picture of the whole project.
-
Great as always! Love the Perry mercenaries, really versatile kit- and you've crushed it with the painting as always, the dark green and yellow is really striking :-*
-
Nice work on those pikemen. You never disappoint.
Depending upon the 2026 Adepticon line up, my next project will include either Scottish pikemen or Macedonian pikemen (sarissa).
I really like your Spanish. The purple foliage is a nice touch.
The water feature on your warlord’s base is brilliant! Love the cattails.

Thank you! For the flowers, I was inspired by the lavender fields of Provence. Was there on holiday in 2019, lots of fantastic medieval hilltop villages. Had a hell of a time with the warlord base, I first used Woodland Scenics still water, but I poured it after having glued and set the flock, and the flock sucked everything up leaving me with a shiny mess. So I had to re-flock the base, and then did the water with UV resin.
When it comes to pikes, I joke a bit about having been assigned Flemish. My two regular opponents had had a chat one day and decided between them they quite liked Scottish and Swiss, which left me with Flemish - who of course seem to be the weakest of the three :D

Thank you! Great kits indeed, even for their age. Only thing I miss is sword arms for light infantry.

And here we are, army photo for the green and gold company:

Very impressive. The colour scheme works very well.

Well done. A lovely collection

Gorgeous collection!

Hell of an achievement. They look amazing. Is this one of your largest forces?

Thank you! For sure, it seems to have gotten quite out of hand. The Rohan force has more cavalry but fewer infantry, and the Black Duns have more infantry but less cavalry.

Your work is amazing. Thanks for posting all these pics and descriptions.

Yes, but not enough to scare fellow wargamers. ;)

Reinforcements for my Age of Chivalry spanish are finally on their way. After finishing the green and yellow force, and with long waiting times for 3D prints to arrive, I have been less motivated to paint (doesn't help that holidays are over) but I did manage to get some paint on these figures. They are kitbashed from Victrix Rus, Vikings and Saxons, and will be melee warriors for Pagan People in Age of Crusades.
I'd finished most of the Lithuanians proper, but I still have 30 odd figures to finish for the Pagan part of this project. Hopefully I find some motivation to get these done, but my thoughts have been occupied with new projects....

Very nice pagan rabble :-)

Cracking stuff mate.
I finally folded and bought some of those photographic backdrops. Blame you for that one lol

They are lovely. I am looking keenly at the new warm climate a3 book and how much it will cost to pay import VAT....

So, on the topic of those new projects I mentioned, here is the start of the next one. I had decided a while back that next project after finishing my Age of Chivalry armies and my Lithuanians would be another Age of Crusades army, specifically muslims. I want to build something that can cover at least two of the three muslim factions in Age of Crusades, and it wouldn't hurt if they could be used for Sassanids (from Age of Invasions, so technically pre-muslim, but those sound like details to me).
To that end I have been picking up some bits and pieces and the project pile as of this weekend looked like this:
As always, I have no original ideas and just steal things from Koyote and Knight-Captain Tyr. Koyote made great use of the Perry afghans for his Saga Muslims, and Tyr kitbashed a lovely Sassanid elephant from a Game of Thrones mini. I happened to spot these elephants for half price, so of course I had to get them. However, unlike both their projects, I will use Victrix muslim kits as the main body of the army (because they are available now). I will also use some V&V kits as I find they match Victrix pretty well in size.
Had some time today and did a bit of assembling:
Warlord, banner and a pair of hearthguard (V&V Muslim Command) - I had to replace some flimsy resin bits with plastic. North Star spears, Victrix moor swords and daggers (from the Norman kits)
A unit of Scout or Tribal Hunter mercenaries. A strange choice to start perhaps but I wanted to see how the kneeling bodies worked with bow arms. Perry bodies, Victrix bows:
A first point of regular melee warriors, Victrix and Perry kitbashes:
And I also built two regular archers:
I had planned to source all the archers I need from Victrix plastic kit, but I feel there's a limited choice of poses so I may grab some V&V muslim archers to add variety.
On the to do list is another two points of melee warriors and more archers. Also going to kitbash Perry and Victrix bodies with some javelins and some with heavy weapons to make Borderer mercenaries.I have to get Victrix heavy cavalry and make both hearthguard both with melee weapons and composite bows. I'll also use this set to kitbash with my V&V camel warriors to make a warlord and camel rider hearhguard for playing Muttatawi'a. When they release I'll get some Victrix horse archers to make mounted warriors.
A couple of weeks ago I made a test base to see how I want to base this army, which I am quite happy with:
However, I am in two minds when it comes to painting. One idea is to make a sort of alternative history african muslim force, like my Malakal force for Sludge. Orange robes, black skin. Perhaps an east african ruler who went on jihad instead of hajj. The other is to go with a more standard muslim/persian scheme and skin colour. What do you think?
-
I like what you are doing here.
The prospect of (bright?) orange robes with dark skin sounds good. Go for it. :)
Your test base is very nice, maybe with the occasional (dry) bush & the odd rock?
-
Damn, what a lovely new project! Always inspiring to look up your thread. Same goes fro the ones from Koyote, Tyr and Zac.
and Tyr kitbashed a lovely Sassanid elephant from a Game of Thrones mini. I happened to spot these elephants for half price, so of course I had to get them.
Thanks for mentioning where the elephants are from. I already wondered at Tyr's thread but couldn't make the connection to GoT. What is their size compared to the Victrix African War Elephant?
A unit of Scout or Tribal Hunter mercenaries. A strange choice to start perhaps but I wanted to see how the kneeling bodies worked with bow arms. Perry bodies, Victrix bows:
That's another creative choice! Wouldn't have thought of using the Afghan Warriors due to their time setting. They surely bring in some interesting poses!
Also, I would be interested too in orange robes with dark skin. Not sure if that fits well with your thoughts about a Sassanid force though.
-
They will be Sassanids in mechanics only then. It would allow me to field the elephants and some variation in play style.
I don't own any Victrix elephants any more, but at a guess the GoT ones are a bit larger, 25% perhaps.
-
As someone who loved your Sludge army, I think seeing more orange robed miniatures would be fantastic. The new warband is shaping up lovely.
-
Great poses on those troops. The army is going to look great on those bases as well
-
Thanks everyone! In regards to the bases, I am using some pigment powders to create colour variation rather than drybrush with paint. It gives a subtler look, a bit hard to capture with the camera.
I've assembled another point of mercenaries, this time Borderers with javelins. Borderers are rugged frontiersmen, at home in highlands and rugged terrain.
-
I went back and added some cork rocks to the bases of the Borderers unit.
Also built another point of regular warriors. Six victrix bodies, two perry.
And two archers (on the right). I do think the Muslim kit is a bit limited in archer options and poses, so I think I might pick up the two sets of arab archers that V&V produce. I will still need to make quite a lot of plastic archers, but it will add some much needed variation.
Finally, an issue I've not quite solved yet is how to build Borderers with heavy weapons. I have a lot of very large very fantastical two handed weapon bits, but something that fits with historical figures is trickier. This test figure uses a polearm from the Frostgrave Cultists 2 kit.
And looking at all these pictures I see a lot of mold lines that I've missed. I'll need to go back and clean quite a bit... Unfortunately I seem to have gotten a Muslim kit with quite prominent mold lines, sometimes Victrix are a breeze but not this time.
-
I completely missed that you're doing an "all-East" project as well. I'm tremendously tickled you also went with the ASOIAF elephants and can't wait to see how you paint them up! Are you planning to give them mahouts or howdahs? I found making the howdahs incredibly labourious, but you'll probably figure out a smarter way. I've found Sassanids by far the most fun to play; curious what you'll gravitate toward.
Really keen to see all this come to life. Interesting that the Victrix Islamics were heavier on the mould lines. Surprising, as they're fairly new. Do you plan to use their Islamic cavalry at all? I've been thinking of picking them up to kitbash into steppe warriors...
Excited to see what comes next.
-
These look promising.
The crouching archer pose is a brilliant idea. If I need to add more archers to my Islamics, I'm stealing that you idea from you. ;)
Love the test base.

One of the game stores I order from happened to have them on sale so had to pick the ellies up. I had otherwise planned to start with a more Saracen-leaning equipment lineup. I am thinking of just sculpting legs to make a driver and one or two seated archers/spearmen and forego the howdah.
I was also a little suprised at the mold lines, Victrix are often great in that regard but I have had some worse batches in the past. Not a disaster for sure, just a bit more work than I had hoped for. I have ordered a set of the armoured cavalry to start building hearthguard, and I'll get some of their horse archers when they release. I also ordered V&Vs two archer packs to give me more variety in the regular archer units.
-
A little kitbash update as I decided to make some regular warrior infantry with spears for the muslims:
And I thought I would give a little overview of where I am at with ongoing projects.
Age of Crusades Lithuanians/Pagan People - these are well under way to being finished at long last. Took a long pause to work on Age of Chivalry but have been getting some paint on what is left. I have 16 archers in progress, and 8 archers and 10 cavalry primed but not started.
Age of Crusades Muslims - this is the newest project of course, still very much in the assebly stage. Most of the infantry has now been built, but I need a few more archers. I'll be building heavy cavalry, both on horse and camels, soon and then I have to wait for Victrix to release light cavalry. I will start painting these after the Lithuanians, and possibly after the AoCh spanish.
Age of Chivalry Spanish - I thought I would work on these over the summer with a lot of 3D printed reinforcements but orders from both Direforge and Studio Historia have been massively delayed compared to my earlier experiences with both shops. At long last the Studio Historia package is in Sweden and should arrive next week.
Age of Chivalry Green and Yellow late 15th century - I need a snappier name for this army, any ideas? Either way, it is finished for now. Everything I planned and built for this army has been painted. I do have figures left on sprues and could expand with more foot knights and maybe crossbows with pavises, but not planning to do so at the moment.
-
So, here is a post I thought I would be writing in july. Back in late May and early June I took advantage of Studio Historia's sales and ordered a number of Reconquer Designs kits to start replacing some of the first units for my Age of Chivalry Spanish. I may also have picked up some more figures just because they are nice. I had anticipated a six to eight week turn around based on previous orders, but for whatever reason this one was heavily delayed. I guess the Reconquer figures have a lot of delicate bits and are prone to misprints. Maybe the summer heat caused issues as well. Who knows? Still, a package arrived this week absolutely stuffed with 3D resin. I've spent a couple of evening cleaning, assembling and getting everything ready for primer as I am told you should not leave 3D resin exposed to too much sunlight without primer.
So let's have a look at what we got, shall we?
First, the new version of Henry Trastamara of Castille. Reconquer remade this character, and the new sculpt is just oozing with presence. Accompanied by a royal standard bearer. I have gone for the version without sculpted heraldry on the caparison.
Funnily enough, around the same time Reconquer released a Henry Trastamara figure, Miniaturas Ezipion dropped a Pedro the Cruel sculpt. Pedro was the defending king in the Castillian Civil War, so I guess these two Spanish designers have chosen sides :D Unfortunately Pedro's horse arrived with only three feet and instead of fixing it I decided to use a spare horse from my earlier Warlords, the Camino de Santiago set from Stronghold Terrain. Photo is terrible, but as these are already heading into priming I won't be able to take a new one until painting.
I grabbed one more Ezipion figure I liked, a Castillian Knight. Here you can see I used some dry bush bits to stabilize horses that were sculpted with only two feet touching the base.
Here are Reconquer's Early 14th century knights. Not something I need need, but lovely sculpts. I used North Star plastic spears rather than the bendy 3D prints.
This is Count Ermengol X. I only ordered one, but received two and some extra horses from the Knights set so I gave him two different steeds and this gives me another two knight figures-
(https://i.imgur.com/UkNDpHk.jpeg)
In this picture, I only ordered Roger di Flor (centre), but received The Black Douglas (right) and Caballero Andante. Lovely sculpts all, more knights for the collection.
Eight light cavalry/jinetes. I gave some of them North Star spears, and the others some spare printed hand weapons. I didn't want them to look like they throw javelins as they lack this equipment option in Age of Chivalry.
12 crossbows. Why is one painted? Well, I had a misprint in the order but fortunately Stronghold Terrain had given me a crossbowman from this set when I bought the spanish archers. You can find him hiding in the back rank of that picture on a previous page.
12 halberdiers. These sculpts can be equipped with spears, halberds or hand weapons but I quite liked the printed halberds so figured I'd try. I received a ton of extra bodies from this set, so I may make a second unit later.
Some clergy. Not sure what I 'm doing with these, maybe objectives or Old Feud characters.
I bought several warlords more than I really need. This is Bertrand du Guesclin (left) and Henry Trastamara (right) with squires. I decided to make one on a 40mm base and one on 50mm so I can be a bit flexible depending on the terrain situation.
I also picked up Pedro the Cruel and the Castillian Knight on foot:
There is also a version of Bertrand du Guesclin ready to fight, and I ended up with two spare Henry Trastamara (these versions are with helmet, one in brigandine, one in surcoat)
Foot versions of the early 14th century knights:
Two versions of Roger di Flor on foot, plus Count Ermengol X:
And finally, appropriate to go with Roger di Flor, eight Almughavars. Technically a little too early, but these will make excellent Bidet mercenaries - javelin equipped light infantry at home in rough terrain.
What do you think, is the project log getting unreasonably long?
-
No blog is too long as long as it continues to entertain.
The figures are great and enjoy the project.
-
That is a heck of a lot of assembly.
And the project log is fine. No reason to not continue to post.
-
This is fantastic - I somehow hadn't seen most of these Reconquer sculpts. Can't wait to see what you do with them.
-
This is fantastic - I somehow hadn't seen most of these Reconquer sculpts. Can't wait to see what you do with them.
Most are recent releases, Henry and his banner and the light cav are from his June release. There are some lovely knights from August that I want to pick up too.
-
A small update, mostly for completeness. Studio Historia threw in a number of duplicated of the 14th century sergeants/spearmen. Funnily some scultps were duplicated more often, and others not at all. One of them I received five copies of!
Anyway, I was able to make up an additional 8 man unit without replicating any sculpts more than a second time. I decided to equip these with the variety of swords, maces, falchions and axes I had received.
-
While I did get a lot painted over the summer, it feels like I spent more time planning projects and waiting for orders to arrive. The big one was of course the Studio Historia order that finally showed up last week, but today I received the last two packages I have been waiting for. One from Direforge, ordered early July, and one from Stronghold Terrain, which to be fair I ordered just the other week.
Some more reinforcements for the Muslims:
And then from Direforge, a number of Medbury Miniatures. First, his Geoffrey de Charnoy sculpt. I think I will paint this to use as a Knight mercenary.
A couple more light cavalry. I couldn't resist the two knuckleheads arguing over directions to the next raid:
And finally, two sets of Pavisiers plus some command figures. I had planned to use these to supplement my Reconquer sergeants, but as Studio Historia gave me plenty extras there I have more regular Warriors than I need. Instead I think I will keep the pavises and replace my metal Claymore pavisiers with these. I just really prefer materials that don't chip during handling. To get a full unit of 12, max in most SAGA Chivalry armies, I added three more spare Reconquer sergeants. I also used North Star spears on these over printed spears.
-
Starting to get some of the 3D prints painted.
These are Reconquer's early 14th century knights, plus two versions of his Roger di Flor and one Baron Ermengol X. Decided to paint these in my mercenary colour scheme, as their appearance makes a nice contrast to the other knigths I have who are more mid/late 14th. Perhaps they are poorer landless knights still wearing old equipment, struggling for money or travelling to Spain as a form of crusade.
And then Almughavars. They will make excellent Bidets, terrain expert skirmishers:
Miniaturas Ezipion's King Pedro the Cruel plus the foot version of his Castillian Knight sculpt. A nice option for a warlord when I don't want a diorama base. He is on a 50mm sabot for flexibility.
What do you think?
-
Looking good so far. I like the way that the colour scheme allows both the units and the leaders to be readily identified but not appear to be too uniform between the actual units.
-
And we are back! I got paint on figures over the weekend:
8 Jinetes by Reconquer designs
(https://i.imgur.com/pMRCehO.jpeg)
Two Medbury sets; sergeants arguing over directions and a mounted command group:
They join my peviously painted Medbury Hobelars and two of Reconquer's gambesson-wearing knights to form my current contingent of light cavalry (warriors with mounts in SAGA terms):
What do you think?
-
I did in fact finish a few more figures over the weekend. Turns out painting light cavalry is a fairly long and tedious task with all their layers of cloth and armour. In between I put some paint on a couple of hero figures as well.
This is Medbury's Geoffroi de Charny. As I already have a ton of warlord-esque figures I painted him in my mercenary scheme, and he will do nicely as a Knight mercenary. One downside of 3D prints is I already managed to snap the lance on the mounted version and when I tried to drill the hand out to insert a new one it shattered. I should be able to replace it nicely with a bit from Perry's agincourt set so not to big an issue.
And speaking of Warlords, Reconquer's version of Bertrand de Guesclin with squire. A very nice figure in my opinion. I even painted eyes for the first time in a long time.
