Title: Dr. The Viking's current ramblings: Dark Side of The Moon page 35
Post by: Dr. The Viking on 06 January 2012, 01:39:19 PM
I've plummeted into a barrel of GAFDOZ... and what better way to start it off than to create some unique (uniqueness being their most flattering feature) aliens - the Walnusians!

A bit unsure about the painting of them but purple would look nice perhaps.

My desktop is rather crammed at the moment... the small spot in the corner is where I paint everything!

Great idea as well. Purple sounds like a nice color choice, maybe with some yellow spots here and there?

I agree: without some sort of ivory colouring, people might not realise they are teeth.  Save the odd colouring for instantly familiar shapes of face and mouth.

I especially enjoy the irony of the paint shelves I put on the wall behind the lamps.. once a year I put all my paint on them and then after a day or two of painting everything is back to normal and the room feels comfy again.  lol

Shouldn't they be armed with whips?

No no.. See these are the ladies of the Walnusian court.  :)

In my scenario Kalle Blixt, lesser known brother of the Danish Jens Lyn (http://pegasus.dk/uploads/komiklex_200/015243gnzuuirepojbuuzu.jpg), will be summoned by the Walnusian high court to investigate the disappearance of all the women. Surely the evil Dr. Zoltron and his raygun has some part in it.

I'm planning to do some Walnusian police/enforcers and a king also. Just need a bit more fiddly bits to do it. Some culprits would perhaps also be nice.
Title: Re: In space no one can hear you laugh!
Post by: Steve F on 08 January 2012, 04:53:05 PM
Sadly, these are probably too perishable to build the Walnusian enforcers around them:

I like the pastel color scheme (reminds me of my daughters Easter basket from grandma last year). Seems appropriate for princesses. Great floating eyes too.

I try to clean my painting area of paints after each 'major' unit is complete.  Doesn't last long but looks good for awhile. :)

I ffinally got some painting done:

The beginning of Cygnus Robot Legion, which will be featured in Episode 1 of the Adventures of Kalle Blixt.

This entry breaks two of the rules I had set for the project: 1) All Bob Olley miniatures (part from my own) and 2) No rip off colour schemes..   ;D

I thought a lot about how to paint them and I simply realised that I thought the standard metal scheme from Hydra Miniatures was brilliant. So metal it had to be.   o_o

Now on the work bench is Cygnus (in a Dr. Doom inspired attire) and his loyal robot guard.. Stay tuna.

I got some Olley trolls and ogres that will be wild men from some planet and live in a cave. Preferably Planet of The Dinousaurs which I also have to make.

Thanks! Well I'm a huge fan of Bob's (well his work anyway) and I've always been wanting to do something with the stuff he's put out over the recent years (scrunts and whatnot)... so I expect scrunts to find their way into this too. Love the little daxes he's done too.  lol

Well other than The Robot Legion of Doom it will be all Olley from here.

Well I'm not working my behind off doing this.. organic chemistry ate my baby! But I'd still like to post a little just to keep the idea alive.

Since this is a WIP/conceptual/painting thread I feel OK about not posting paint all the time.  lol

Here are the Ogres I mentioned. I'm thinking a proper blue/coloured job would give them the hint of Trek needed for them to be cave marauders on some strange planet that Blixt will set his feet upon. They're always looking for fresh meat.

These 'stirges' were a must. A nice alien natural wild encounter on Planet Z. I imagine they'll be on the same planet as the cave marauders.

I decided that mr. Blixt should have a side kick and this old space pirate will be it. Not much to say other than that.

I found this ray gun! Now that has to be perfect for retro sci-fi evil overlord plans, eh?

Oh yes and finally I've also been doing a bit of scratch building and I hope to present a finished piece soon!:

Haha oooh okay! Cracking job you did too. I really like your take on the Lost Legion.

I thought your comment was ironic in that I have yet to show a single painted GAFDOZ mini (although several minis of other makes have made it to the thread) yet.  lol lol

Wait...is that masking tape covering the hole in the washer?
Good grief, that's brilliant!

You know - that's the exact comment I made in 2004 when I saw a guy doing it to the bases of his undead warhammer camels.  lol

Masking tape indeed. People seem to have all sorts of worries that 'it won't be sturdy enough' and put green stuff on instead... but I may be a peculiar fellow in that respect as I never put my bases on pointy sticks, thus minimizing the risk of penetration and the bases being scandalized. Hmm this sounds soo wrong.

The eyepod is coming along nicely... I don't even know how it's going to fit into the story. I do know however that I will present teh game as a serial of three episodes. And the players get to dice to see what goes on in each. Everything will be pretty random so first you probably roll 'what happened', then 'who did it happen to' and then 'who did it' and so on.. So each sometimes a walnusian will be kidnapped by an evil robot and Kalle Blixt will come to the rescue. Other times a robot will be kidnapped by a Walnusian and Kalle Blixt will once again have to sort it out.

A bit like the old encounter table from Rogue Trader, only worse.

Metal terrain is a good idea.

Yeah! I'm thinking that I could do it... Although terrain for each faction was not part of the initial plan. BUT - if I'm going to have a project run for 2 years it should be manageable.

I'm tempted to include a lot of old print cards in the scenery too. Or something similar. Maybe it's a bit over much. It's when it's wrong it's right.  lol

I would finish all the figures/gangs first. Then if the inspiration is still alive, go for terrain parts.

I think I might have to get another one and take the plume off and paint him up the same way as the first.  ???

I imagine there are lots of opportunities for moding the miniature.  Crest, open right hand, staff. Lots of stuff.

Perhaps a personal guard?

Well... it might not be a 'find' as much as yet something I found.

But it will be mightily useful for me as Kalle Blixt's rocket ship!

It a cheap playmobil (for even smaller children) rocket.

I was a bit surprised to see that the model I'll be using for Werner Blitz (Klug Pluton) was rather large. But OK - Werner will be bigger than Jens and Kalle then. Maybe he'll shrink when I paint him..

And now here's a piece of music to fill the intermission, happy weekends!

Post by: Dr. The Viking on 22 May 2012, 05:25:05 PM
Work work work and I get nothing done!

I'm trying to finish a lot of stuff for a lot of different games as always.

Firstly I'm working on a Gloire project.. a pulpy one at that.

So here's: Athos, Darthos, Aramthos and Pathos - the three + one musketeers helping out Don Armando in our continuous story line.

A few of the personage I'm also adding. The next scenario will hopefully feature all or some of them. Especially the girl.

And where's musketeers there's bound to be cardinals guard also! Everyone knows.

At this year's Horisont convention I'm presenting a small skirmish called 'Don Diego Did It!' with the lovely miniatures from Boothill. Ideally I'll figure out how to make burning miniature torches and give the game a summer nightly feel.

And lastly I'm still rummaging around the pirates theme...

... getting ready for Åcon

And vikotnik is bringing goblin pirates so I had to retaliate with a mystical crew also  lol

Other than that I'm working on a new presentation game that I hope will strike the same chords as my Vikings vs. Owlbears did. It'll be called Attack of The Vegan Cannibals and the basic story is this:

Just a mile out of town a vegan cult was having a lovefest to celebrate Mother Earth. But by some evil trickery their punch bowl with vegetable juice was infected with a flesh-to-plant turning bacteria that suddenly turned them all into horrible cadaver like vegetables!

All their inner hatred for mankind and the way it treats living creature and other vegetables overcame them and they set off to avenge their brethren in the local township.

So the basic game is something about a group of ad hoc investigators and some goverment cover up guys battling it out trying to find out what happened to the vegans. The goverment will try to cover it all up (doh) and the investigators will try to single out the source of the accident. And of course both sides will battle living trees, vegetables and fruity queens along the way.

What'd'ya think!?  o_o

Today I'm thinking that if they don't already exist some one ought to make LAF coffee mugs! I'll buy two!

Bright yellow flowers seem a little out of place for a voodoo queen, but they look good!

What you might want to do is to get a balance between 'real' and 'fantastic'.

At real vodou ceremonies, the dominant colour is white. This is then accented by a small addition of colour – which colour that is depends on the vodou spirit being honoured.

For example, here's a photo I took at Fete Gede, which is the Vodou feast of the dead. The colour of the Gede spirits is purple:

So, just a hint of colour on a base of white should capture the mood.

Hope that gives you some inspiration!  :)

Admit it, the only reason you painted flowers was so you could ask that question!

Really nice work. I quite like the flowers. Don't you think that the space marine is a wee bit over powered for a game with pirates?  lol

Phew!

Åcon has come and gone. Too fast in my humble opinion. I'll share with you here a brief overview of the convention.

We had 128 m2 of tent set up this year all courtesy of Castor on this forum. There were some 15 participants in all through the weekend. We had Barbara The Barbarian and loads of beer chilling in a Hello Kitty pool.

Thursday:
Thursday night we had a deranged game of "Røvede Stationsby" in which the Death Lords had arrived on Earth to eliminate the planet's only meteor laser.

The Death Lords wanted to use their meteor slingshot to pulverize the Earth and then use an intergalactic vacuum cleaner to gather up the mineral cloud afterwards.

To aid them in their quest they'd animated the entire local museum, which was at the time displaying a selection of the world deadliest inhabitants through time: Mammoths, romans, cavemen and dinosaurs!

Opposite the Death Lords was the usual rowdy crowd of police, swat and the fellow-townswoman of 50 foot size and some private contractors called The Tiger Force.

And here are some photos... while they may not look the part the fun that was had more than made up for it:

Saturday
We also had a wee pirate game that featured vikings, dwarves in leopard skin hats, goblins and pirates!

Phew!

We also had a wee pirate game that featured vikings, dwarves in leopard skin hats, goblins and pirates!

Here the dwarves and the crew of Sir John Glutton Smythe are fighting out his birthday at the local inn

Actually that is a picture of the Dwarves fighting Sven Flækskalle and his Viking crew. I did not take any pictures of the barfight with sir John Glutton Smythe I totally forgot in all the chaos and mayhem.

And also Jaay my first post and me out of lurkdom.

Here's a few photos of the game, featuring a few of Thorbjørn's mini's and terrain, plus a few of LAF's other members.

End game start up:

A mighty fine idea! We should all do and get together in one giant battle. Ze Germans will roll cheap rum barrels over the border to make sure everyone is in a piraty (is that a word?) mood  :D

So on the workbench this week are new citizens of Røvede:

First I'm making 6 Star Trek conventioneers... or are they? Maybe they really are time travelling Klingons?

And secondly three vampire kids that are going to hang around the play grounds of Røvede.

More interestingly the second coming seems to have come and gone... or at least lost it's momentum. Jesus arrived in Røvede during 1989 and found the place so horridly depraved and depressed that he gave up and moved into a flat over the local grill and bar - "Røvede Bodega & Grill". He changed his name to Jens Christian Snedkersen and now goes round town searching for beer with his good eye closed waiting to lead an uprising against Stein Bagger - the ultimate evil ruler of Røvede.

And lastly there's Elvis... who's toting guns and throwing grenades in his music shop in town center as he's been since he fled the spot light in the seventies.

I've also begun work on the first of the tanks of the Python corporation. A terrorist organisation hell bent on throwing down the rules of law and installing anarchy instead. They'll be attacking Røvede in force at the next Åcon in one year.

OK... now.. this is a bit of a painful post for me to write, because I really love the Killer B miniatures and the whole idea behind their games. And I wish the best for the guy doing it all.  :)

On the same page I actually paid £10 for a nice and shiny rules book from them. And here's where things get ugly I think.

Having read the rule book and being a bit 'hmmm.. maybe it'll all work when I get it on the table' I had set up for a game of Kalle Blixt vs. The Robot Master

I had invited Dr. Zombie over so we doctors could examine the inner workings of this new specimen.  8)

Here are some shots of the setup:

Overview of the luscious jungle.

So what was wrong?

Well for starters. There are things that are missing.

The rules do not mention what turn sequence is used... what table size is 'standard'... how much terrain the author thinks works.

The rules refer to a 'charge' - but nowhere does it say what compromises a charge. And it's even rather important as the figures charging get a bonus... AND the figures being charged get a penalty.

There are more such weird omissions throughout the book. One of the better is 'to the rescue' - a cool special move that your hero can make to save another figure. Only problem is the rules don't explain how it works. Only that the figure is saved.  :-X

First there's an attack phase and then a 'to the rescue' phase. Nowhere does it say if figures that died in the attack phase are eligible for saving later. But we ruled that that was probably the idea.   ???

Then there's the set up or layout of the book. For instance the rules for fighting are written under the introductory review of the stats... under the 'brawn' stat. Now this might make sense to some, but not to me. I'd like a paragraph called 'combat' or something and have all the combat rules in there.

The example armylists include units that doesn't feature in the book and wrong points costs for units listed just above the example. Now this is not a big thing at all. But it signals to me that very little in the way of proof reading was done.

AND on top of that, what about the rest of the rules. Well this is purely subjective in opinion (I think the above is more objective in nature) but even here the game totally fails to me.  ::)

First off every figure has AP - adventure points. Even the lowest minion has to keep track of how much he moved and how many points he spent. In the example armylists there are some 30-50 figures on each side and I just don't see how keeping track of that many figures would ever be fun. Just a lot of work.

Shooting seemed like it was almost impossible to hit. You roll 2d6 and hit a target based on the range band you're in. For example at long ranges a rifle will hit at basic 8. A shot costs 2 AP.

A standard shot - Unaimed - gives you a -2 penalty... for one  AP point more you get a +2 aiming bonus. Now is that a total of +0 or +2? I said 0 Dr. Zombie said +2. After playing a little finding that it was impossible to hit anything I went along with +2.

OK so the list of modifiers goes on. If you moving, that's -1, if your target moved that's another -2, if he's obscured that's another -2. The terrain we used made and the fact that we moved a lot made it -7 most of the time and -11 to hit heroes as they are more difficult to hit.

This in my subjective opinion coupled with the fact that the basic figure has 4-5 AP and you can only move 4cm/AP makes for a very very slow game. A minion moving flat out over good ground will move 16cm. And be impossible to hit.

Next once you hit something it automatically dies almost. Most things having just 3-4 Life Points and the standard rifle dealing 1d6+1 damage no matter who you are.

Close combat is not to my liking either. When I read the thing I was confused but thought the idea that the hero could fight off a group of minions easily was cool.

However as was disclosed by our game you move in one phase and initiate a combat in the next. So if you go first you can never attack a target that doesn't want to be attacked, because it gets to move after you and then just moves away... when the attack phase comes you're not in basetobase and can't iniatite anything. Clumsy.

Maybe this is where the missing charge rules are meant to do something. (I sincerely apologize if this is all down to a mistake on our behalf of not finding the charging rules).

So all in all, my verdict is that GAFDOZ is a rules set that has some great ideas for what should be in a retro sci-fi set. Rules for setting traps, sacrifing henchmen, red jersey troopers taking hits for characters and so on.. but the execution is sooo poor that it seems inaccessible to people like me (in fact I think modern physics melt next to this).  o_o

I'm not a power gamer or anything of that ilk, but this left me thinking that it was possibly the worst rules I have ever played.  :?

As mentioned earlier though I love the range Craig has build and I love the whole idea of retro gaming. But I just have to write this as I did spend the money... now to make amends I will go to the KillerB site and order Rukbat and some more stuff.  :D

KillerB should stay focused on miniatures and skip the rules. I don't know about the new supplement they have out, but I hope that it's compatible with other rules and mainly just a narrative.  lol

Hehe thanks. Well in my world the rules are meant to make the game fun, and not obstruct the story. If they can handle that I think the rules are good. But I just didn't find that these particular rules were capable of not rendering our story defunct.  lol

So I'm basicly just saying that I'm not going to use these rules for my presentation of my retro sci-fi project at Horsiont next year.

Seeing the topic title I thought you had been to a new theme park :~}

Shame about the rules. Have you sent your comments to Killer B?
They might appreciate feedback.

Jungle rocks look good, but how about more vines hanging down the vertical surfaces? That wouldn't interfere with standing figures on the flat, should be relatively easy to do (perhaps just green or brown string?) and would allow figures more chances to climb up or down (with a chance to fall).

Wow that looks amazing! It looks simple when you show it like that. Thanks for the step by step.

I liked the looking for the plaster bag half way through lol the number of times that type of thing happens usually when I am holding something else together hoping it will stick.

Thanks!

I did get a bit more work done to the chimneys but I'm not finished painting them. I tried to set up a board though and I think it looks OK.

Here's a photo with Jesus and some cowboys from Hell for scale

I like the red hue to everything. I'm going to try and find some yellow rocks to act as sulfur too. And obviously the board needs a big central volcano piece.

Something like this would be cool also:

I think you can get coloured glue sticks for hot glue guns, some with glitter too.
I've seen things (trees? aliens?) made using hot glue on a wire armature, maybe that might be another option?

The small tealight fake candles are often in UK pound shops in the autumn (firstly amongst the cheap halloween decorations and then later amongst cheap Christmas ones). I think last time we got them (for a school performance of Beowulf!) they were about 5 or 6 for £1.

randomly flickering LEDs can be bought from  Zinge   (http://zinge.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=57)
they can be used as "throwies" (just taped to a button cell battery). more on that here (http://www.evilmadscientist.com/2011/does-this-led-sound-funny-to-you/).

I've been wanting to buy some for a while to create flame markers with the Flames of War smoke and flames set, but keep putting it off .  ::)

Nope...while it's a spoof (I think), there really is a song by that title.
First verse:

Drop kick me, Jesus, through the Goal Posts of Life.
Don't kick me to the left or the right.
Kick me straight through the up rights.
Drop kick me, Jesus through the Goal Posts of Life.

Imus in the morning featured it as part of his Right Reverend Billy Sol Hargas's First Church of the Gooey Death & Discount House of Worship from Del Rio, Texas: Gold Buckle on the Bible Belt.

I'm actually in a complete western mood right now. Having just watched Fistful of Dollars with my two eldest boys. Wow they took it in like I don't know what. Everything was Baxters, Rojos and the Man with No Name the next two days.  lol
I think my father would been proud... he tried hard to get me into all that when I was a kid, but I didn't buy into it... not until now!

So, I don't have any cowboy miniatures and I don't even know what scale I want that show in - I'm thinking 17mm as that would be manageable... but we'll see.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWZf_RBcB_Y&feature=related

In the absence of cowboys, I dug out some old GW chaos stuff and started fiddling with it:

This will be a Chaos Chariot.. Imagine armour plates, a long fecking spear that they wield together or something and then we're rolling.

And this will be a Tzeentch sorceror on a flaming lava turtle floating through the Never with a billowing trail of smoke behind it

Hehe. Black Sheep! Are we going to force Andym to make that for our game?  lol

It's from the tubes you get all sorts of pasty food in.. mayonnaise etc.

Whenever we finish a tube like that in our home I cut it up, clean it and flatten it. Store it for future projects.

I had to go with a flat area in the middle, so there would actually be somewhere to put miniatures!

What on earth is that pink stuff on the death-roller sheep-bird? It looks really odd, might be a nice texture to paint over...

Loving the clouds. Very cool!

Hehe I know that feeling.  lol

Here's a couple of miniatures that I hastily tried to finish yesterday for a game, that I wound up cancelling because I was falling asleep while standing up when the evening finally came:

I can see that I need to go over the metal areas again and the head of the Witch King too... forgot to paint the nose and pick the teeth out.

Snow white is as done as she's going to be. I think she got it thoroughly.

Two things:

1) Firstly I've started a new thread to document the endeavours of Dr. Zombie and I while we campaign with Skulldred.

It's here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=44767.0

2) Secondly. Craig of KillerB games wrote me that he'd read what I'd written about GAFDOZ. And summa summarum he'd refunded my money and taken my comments with him. Boy! Now that is customer service. I protested against the refund but now I've decided to go and spend the money at Killer B's store. Only thing holding me back is that I have to check the basement first to see what I haven't bought already. ...
Even if I ain't gonna be using their rules I'm still using those lovely Bob sculpts! Everybody go buy something from them now!  lol

Knuckle Duster 28mm Old West miniatures review:

They're awesome.

Here are some size comparison shots:

Old Glory, Knuckleduster, Dixon, Knuckleduster, Boot Hill, Knuckleduster, Reaper

Slightly off Boot Hill (as the modern 28mm representative) and Old Glory (as the O.G. representative) but spot on with Dixon and Reaper.

I love the sculpt of The Man With No Name.

Title: Re: Dr. The Viking's current ramblings: Prussian tanks!
Post by: Dr. The Viking on 08 September 2012, 08:54:22 AM
OK so I'm back at VSF for a moment.. spurred by the Triumph and Tragedy rules that promise to invigorate our game after it died in the hands of the last set we used.

T&T is at once tactic and fast... and not cluttered up in nonsense. Thumbs up. In retrospect I don't know why we tried the German rules lastly... if anyone should be able to deliver a set of good rules it should be a German!   ;)

In our VSF setting Prussia and England is not at war as such. They have a general mistrust of each other but they don't fight a land war in Europa akin to a world war or something. It's strictly war by proxy in the colonies of Asia and Africa.

But as things are getting hotter I thought the Prussians would start to employ factory like conditions to their armour production. Steam tanks have proved to be the way forward and the reknowned scientist engineer Udo Frank has designed a new tank that makes up for it's lack of speed in it's ease of construction. It is the AX-VII:

The production line. Welding teams are coming next to install wheels and cogs.

More of the concept. Not a prototype but just a general image.

The locomotive mechanism

The plans must not befall the British and secrecy is of the utmost importance. The Prussians hope to launch a never seen before brutish strike against the British and once and for all knock out the Empire.

But they’re unpainted..and I've thought you’re that guy here who hates pics of unpainted stuff..  ;D

I would never stoop to the point of expressing hate about my hobby. My feelings are a bit more controlled, I think.  lol

I prefer pictures of nicely painting or partially painted miniatures above pictures of unpainted miniatures for sure.

Terrain on the workbench, I think, is quite nice to see in the nude first and then in paint in one of the appropriate boards later.  :)

The mountains look great.

Thanks. It's all inspired by the revered Major General Tremorden of course. Not my idea at all in fact.

I've gone and misted them with white spray paint now, but I think I'll give them a proper airbrush instead as the mist left me a bit 'hmmm'-ish.

At the mountains of madness!!!!

Love them mate, I really like that they look like stage props. You could do a Wild West town in the same way!!!

Haha! I'm going Mexico, so don't think that's going to happen.

I actually did take some, but they turned out completely crappish. So I just have to figure out how to do it properly. Bear in mind that this is my Work In Progress thread, so nothing is done yet. The inf still needs to get their guns painted and the shields too. And some black in their eyes.

As I'm almost living on the breadline these days I'm trying to get some use out of old crap I've had lying around.

This week it's some old WW1 Brits that I almost certainly will never entertain in a proper game of World War 1... so I chopped off their heads and added some more humorous ones and they will now do as sci-fi light infantry for my Korus Vultor army.

I'm not much of a sculptor but in 15mm I think the slightly comical look adds to the overall.  lol

Yes, I'm sure the Americans would be thrilled by the prospect...  ;)

In all seriousness (blatant misuse of a word, nicht wahr?) though I did contemplate orange too. Brownish jackets and khaki trousers. We'll see.

I'm liking the thoroughly rewarding feeling that is 15mm... completing entire miniatures in a matter of minutes!

I must say that Jonas has a point with the white. Even though I would be playing the bad guy again the. But perhaps that was settled the moment I made the light infantry wear pointy face-mask-hats .

In Spain, during Holy Week, you see processions filled with people dressed up like the pix above every year... It's quite a spectacle!

Anyway, I'd certainly avoid orange hoods, as I think at that scale it'd look like they are wearing traffic cones...  lol

Man! Those papal Christian people are some real lookers.  lol

OK so today I lined up my dinosaur collection and took a picture. I know that most people on this planet are into dinosaurs, and a lot of you probably have your own collection and thus can relate.

I'm not going to take pictures of the 15mm scale ones I have as they're, well... 15mm.

First up is a herd of Tricera... let's not get into detail with the suffix there. Suffice to say that recent developement in the field has shown that what was thought to be different species (protoceratops and triceratops) are all the one and the same. I'm taking it one step further and saying that anything with 4 legs and horns goes into the triceratopii category.

As ever I present to you a new WIP... I hope the point got across earlier that this thread is exclusively for work in progress. Finished business will get posted in the relevant folder later.

I think I'm suffering from miniatures fatigue at the moment. I have so many projects and so little time. And even though I enjoy sitting by myself painting stuff and not really gaming, I'm beginning to feel slightly annoyed by looking in my cabinets and seeing hordes of painted stuff that I've never used.

Also lately I've started gaming a bit with janner of LAF Medieval fame and it really got me thinking that what I want to do now is have some games and stick to one genre (or three at tops) for a least half a year.

It seems the first pick will be Dux Brittanarium. We've ordered starting forces and now we're basicly just waiting for them to turn up...

Dr. Zombie and I did have a good thing going with the Skulldred campaign, but the rules were not really suited for our almost roleplaying like approach. I hope the campaign is not dead, but it seems the good zombie has been drowned in work...

OK, so, I have been trying to paint a bit also. Second World War II. Yeah! It's been quite a while but I used to game I Ain't Been Shot, Mum! quite a lot back in 2009 and earlier. This time it's 28mm Russians. Been lying in my store for ages... and now I will paint them! Damnit!

I've tried to speed up painting by using drybrushing and other crappy techniques for the initial steps. I'm not in the illusion that I would be able to paint a force in top standard and live to tell... I don't want to tire myself doing this.  ;)

Haven't done the eyes yet, and won't do so until I get an optivisor. I tried one in Germany and I'm not ever going to bother painting eyes without one again...

No issue! Just not an RPG.. or really a campaign game. More of a competitive  Songs style battle game. Quite OK.

Think perhaps GW LOTR would suit my gaming style better.

Thanks for the motivation!

That unicorn is definitely going on my list.

I'll probably bring the game to Horisont 5 as well. With a setup of sorts... and a new set of boards for the ground. Needs to be more purpleish I think.

It was either this or the board the depicts a battle going on in a brain. I might still need to do that as well though. Jut can't store the thing in my car yet.

OK now I'm bummed... turns out that the fancy paint I bought doesn't even begin to cover the fancy lines I did on the buiwdins!

Look:

Shriek! Aaaargh the horror!

I don't know what I'll do... maybe some poly!?

I've had the same problem with using biro to mark out cork buildings, no matter how much paint you put on it seems to leak through. Try painting them over with PVA (wood glue) first see if that seals them.

I'm afraid that biro is indelible ink and you won't really get rid of it any time soon. The best option is probably to sand it all back and mark with a pencil (and use a pencil from now and ever on).

We have this problem at work, especially with youngsters out of uni who seem to want to mark everything with a bloody pen and find out their mistake afterwards.

Pva might work but it'll still leak through after time.

Of course, if anyone has the ultimate solution then I'm all ears but we haven't found one yet (apart from the sanding).

cheers

James

Hmm... I think I'll try using alchohol. It solves most problems it seems.

I gave in and read quite a few pages of this.  You truly are a genius, a totally bonkers, mad, loopy genius but a genius.  Crazy, crazy Viking.

I hope he came with a friend, we don't want him being lonely. Perhaps he could be friends with ironman, and red skull?

That's a beauty of a PJ Crazy Viking, the figure is right up my alley. I just don't know what his role will be in the fluffy pink clouds. Will he be protecting the pegasus people from the dinosaurs?

That's some very nice and effective shading there. Black is difficult, I  find. It is easy to overdo it and make it look grey.

Thank you sir. I find it easier to paint black if you highlight using fleshtones instead of whites/greys. Courtesy of PappaMidnight.

On this one I think I did actually use greys though... doh!

Oh well - on with the rambling: I've been meaning to make a mat for my African gaming. I went to the DIY and bought the 7 tubes of sealant and a partridge in a pear tree, scooted home and poured it all over the cloth I'd bought as well. I'd bought a tube of liquid pigment as well to tone the sealant.

To my horror I discovered that I'd bought GREY sealant. Damn. So I skipped the idea of making an Africa mat and made one of the Moon instead.

The reason the felt mat is brown... is of course that I thought I was making an African mat. In retrospect I should have gotten a grey one for the Moon.

Now I don't really know what to do with a moon mat, but I guess I have to make some craters and a nazi moon base as well now.

A naughty German space base sounds like a corking idea. Don't make it like the one from the film though  ;)

Working on this at the moment. It's a daemonologist... inspired by old warhammer fluffery.
