Since completing my Gangsters “And Stuff” collection I have been working on my next 28mm project which was inspired by Firefly/Serenity with a healthy dose of Star Wars thrown in for good measure. The main focus of this layout will be an Eavesdown Docks-style environment with a wide mixture of races, cultures and technologies. Most of my spacecraft will be ships marketed with the Star Wars films plus a few from Star Trek, Space 1999, Thunderbirds and even the pig from Toy Story. My goal with this posting is to undertake something I have not been able carry through with in the past… an ongoing posting of the figures I will be using in this collection as I get them painted. I going to start with three spaceship crews all made up from Heroclix figures. I hope to have this collection done (figures, buildings, vehicles and spacecraft) around June of 2017… we’ll see. If you haven’t seen one of my layouts/galleries in the past and consequently have no idea where I will be taking this project, my Victorian city will give you an idea of the kind of project I am talking about. You can see the Victorian city at www.warin15mm.com/Victorian-Gallery.html

Great start to an ambitious project.
-
Have been following around to many boards and many projects, and I have to wonder when you need to change you 'nick.'
Hell of a lot of awesome stuff in 28mm; CASE IN POINT. :-*
Aren't you afraid of 'one true scale' backlash? lol
Doug

lol
It's true, awesome stuff. Looking forward to seeing this project develop!
-
supervike, I am confident that the collection will be completed... I've been pretty good at carrying through with that, but I seem to fall down on these efforts on my part to show the progress I am making in stages. Going to give it another try. The_Beast, I can't argue with you about the nickname no longer being a light on what I do. That's the reason I include "28mm" when I post one of my 28mm galleries or projects. That said I still love the 15s and 15s are my focus when doing military/historical collections, and after nearly a decade of being War In 15MM I'm just comfortable with it... backlash and all. Richard

Thank you Dr. I think this one will be good for some laughs... lots of crazy figures and spacecraft to work with, and I'm taking advantage of the eclectic nature of an Eavesdown Docks type of environment to bring in a lot of great stuff I couldn't find other places for. As envisioned right now this one will be two 5 ft. x 7 ft tables with at least 12 docked spacecraft, a small military base, a town with buildings by Monolith Design and Snapdragon among others, a spaceship interior as well as a Star Wars' style cantina interior, and every figures I can find any justification to include. Should be a fun ride.

That's the textbook example of "Go big or go home" :o Can't wait to see this project take shape.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did I read once that you don't game with these massive projects you create?
-
Dr. that is correct. I don't game, but in my defense when I began painting the 15mm military miniatures I believed I was going to be gaming. My reasons for not gaming probably hinge on one key negative and one very wonderful positive. The negative is that I just never found the right group of people. For me the necessary chemistry required the pleasure of the company you were gaming with (a lot of time was going to be spent together) and that probably involved some laughter. It also required the ability to get into the period whether history or Pulp/Adventure/Victorian Gothic (whatever). One of the reasons I do such detailed layouts is that I want it to feel right... maybe I just lack imagination so it has to be more real to draw me in. When a game just becomes rule books and dice I have no interest, and frankly that is what I saw time after time. Then one day I woke up to the realization of my wonderful positive... I love painting and building and designing the collections and while I am doing that (and it takes years from the collection to the completion) I am playing my own game and loving it. It's like I putting together a movie. Anyway, I just never got bitten by the gaming bug, but I found my bliss in doing what I do. Richard
-
Good start! And knowing your projects, this will be amazing!
-
A great start and I can't wait to see you finished results. Your work is totally inspiring. :-* I'll never come close to it (and I'm creating layouts for gaming first and foremost), but I've certainly been putting a lot more effort into the "look" of my tables since coming across your site.
-

Of course, my comment was a tease done in admiration; if you need your back covered during any 'backlash', we're here. I've yet to see even a hint, of course.

And there we have the disconnect. Of course, we've received bliss in seeing what you do.
However, there are those of who try, and fail. Haven't quit yet, mind you, but the ideas that don't get realized are a bit of an annoyance.
On the gaming side, though, I'm lucky to have those I enjoy being around and even losing to. ;)
Don't play a lot, but when I do, I cherish the time.
And we ALL dream of seeing your work 'in action.'

First laet me say I love your work :-* :-* :-*

I feel your pain. When I get asked why I dont just computer game I tell people its because I enjoy the social aspects of gaming with friends. I have been fortunate to find those kinds of people and so get to enjoy gaming with my collection. I have however gone years with out the joy of gaming as well.

This has always been a contention of mine as well. A miniature game should look good! This has been a goal of mine and so I to spend a good deal of time on the "set" as it were. (Mine tend to be much smaller however 3x3 or 4x6 table areas) Your work is amazing and inspiring. I do have one or two questions
First once you have finished a project and photographed it does it ever see the light of day again?
Second how do you safely store your buildings and the like? That has to take up a massive amount of room. :? Are all you miniatures stored in the wooden boxes pictured in few places and if so how many does it take to store your collection?
-
Thanks again. I really appreciate the appreciation. I've said this on postings of other galleries I've done but I think I can't say it enough here on LAF. The work of the members of LAF forum has given not only inspiration because of the great work that is displayed here but like Sunjester I have been encouraged by their work to put more effort into what I do... to look at things more creatively than I might have otherwise. So posting my projects and galleries is, I hope, some return on all I have received... plus your kind words make me happy. The_Beast, I never doubted the tease and as far as backlash goes I have only received encouragement for the things I do which is one of the wonderful things about the talented folks on LAF. My head movie on this space project is rolling and my paint brushes are brushing so I hope to have this project done by June so we can all see it... even though I have this vision or "movie" in my head of what one of these galleries will be, it is always a surprise to me when they come out looking as I have plan. In the meantime, I hope to keep posting the pieces as I progress, and I hope you will check them out from time to time. Richard

The first new crew I’m adding is composed of the Foundry Street Violence figures that make up the pack titled Hardwire Troupe. I really like a lot of the figure groups/packs that make up Street Violence and this one seemed as though it could form a tough little crew who were planning to “misbehave.” The second crew is an unlikely bunch who obviously come from a planet with a limited gene pool. A year or so ago I found five of the Heroclix Bouncing Boy figures in the five-for-a-dollar box. I had no idea how I would put them to use, but I loved the figure and for a dollar I couldn’t pass them up. When I began my space project I remembered the Judge Dredd figure Fattie with his round shape and supporting wheel, and decided I would form a Fattie-inspired crew. It wasn’t hard. I cut a connecting peg from a Lego block and used it as the belly base for the wheel. I cut a small square of Evergreen Plastic to sit on the Lego belly base and act as the divider for the Evergreen Plastic struts that supported the wheel. I then used wheels off little plastic cars I got at the swap meet for 50 cents each. The goggles are small pieces of plastic rod from Plastruct Plastic, the eye patch is Squadron Green Putty, and the weapons and equipment are from my odds-and-ends stash of stuff. The modified Bouncing Boys will probably crew my Toy Story Piggy Bank spaceship, but that’s for another posting.

-
Whoa, great idea.
I used a Heroclix 'Blob' for a fatty, never thought to use that guy. Love your bellywheel idea. This is going to be a pretty amazing endeavor by the looks of it...
-
Dr., thanks for continuing to play along with me. I'll try to keep it interesting or at least regular. I'm glad you like the Bouncing Boy crew. It's a little off the wall, but I really like it and it was fun to do... also a really nice little figure from Heroclix. I'm considering my options right now in terms of what to post next. I've been working on a group of the East Riding Corporate War figures that I really like and appear to me to be great figures for an Alliance or Blue Sun security team. Also, I fell in love with Alex Bews' Galaxy Council (I'm sure I'm not alone there), so I'll be working on ambassadors to such a council in transit through this frontier space port I'm putting together. My painting is in no way in the same league with Alex, but I love the idea so I'll take my best shot with them. I've picked up some of his Astropolis figures (great figures), Reaper, Warhammer 40k, Privateer Press/Warmachine & Iron Kingdoms, plus two Heroclix, and I was lucky to get the Jon Boyce Colony 87 beauties... big council. Anyway, hope you stay tuned even if its just the two of us. Richard
-
I loved the East Riding Corporate Wars’ Slicks and Corporate Enforcers the first time I saw them. They looked to me to be the perfect security team for either the Alliance or Blue Sun. As I said in an earlier posting Alex Bews’ “Galaxy Council” is an inspiration… absolutely a treat. With that as my inspiration I am committed to adding a group of ambassador figures (often in pairs) to my project… in transit through this rough, “frontier” port. My first pair of ambassadors is from Iron Kingdoms. I removed the dagger from the purple figure and added a staff taken from a Heroclix figure. The spacecraft is the first of about 20 I will be including in this collection. I found this one and all the others at the swap meet. It was in pretty bad shape, parts missing and covered with caked-on mud, but the potential was obvious and the price was right. It’s a big ship… about 27 inches in length. The ship is the Eagle 1 from the Space 1999 TV series.

I don't care if it were covered in sh....!
Well, you know. lol
NEVER turn down an Eagle!
As for the enforcers, prolly Blue Sun. Like the man said, the Alliance assumes that they're the GOOD guys.
Older I get, the closer to home those bouncing boys, especially with the added belly wheel, feel. :'(
Too bad I can't keep accepting how awesome your work is! :-*
Doug

Looking good.
Can't wait for your next update :)
-
I very much like the security team - they look very useful and very versatile too!
-
Yep. Nicework on the security team and the clean up on the eagle :) .
I noticed on one of the model kit sites I visit that your eagle, new in box, would be worth hundreds of pounds so you have been very lucky in finding it :)
Are you going to add engines on the back in the style of the original ones or go for something different?
You've an excellent little hobby blog going on here :)
EDIT - Here's the kit... 195 Euros:

Thanks to all for taking the time to write and for the kind words. Axiom and Inso, glad you like the security team. Axiom, as the man who gave us Colony 87, that is high praise for what East Riding has done. The East Riding Corporate War figures/security team are really unique, and I was determined to get them for this project the minute I saw them. The_Beast, I probably agree with you that they are better for Blue Sun, but I still have to flesh out how a lot of this layout will work. Inso, I have seen the Eagle for over $100 on eBay so you are very right; it was a lucky find. I got it for just $15. As I said it was covered with mud... I had to take it out in the yard and spray it with the hose for a long time to get it clean. It was also missing one of the large side panels, several jet funnels for lift, a few of the landing feet, the windshield for the cockpit... it was missing a lot, but it had all of that wonderful exterior piping and I'd never seen one before at the swap meet so I bought it. I've had it for several years now waiting to get worked on. I've never seen one again. New feet and funnels were cast in resin. The side panel and windshield (probably no wind in space) plus some small detail pieces were done with Evergreen Plastic. You are right about the rear engines. I found some good replacements (not the originals) at the swap meet this weekend so they will go one soon. Thanks again for writing. Hope you will stay tuned... plan to have more figures and another spacecraft up later this week. If I get the rear engines on the Eagle I'll try to remember to take a picture of that as well. Richard
-
I've always liked those Slicks, I have a few myself. I picture them as up-hive Necromunda House Delaque- bodyguards to the leadership of the house, distinct from the underhive gangers.
Great work on the ship too, I'll need to keep my eyes open for one ;)
-
Dr., when I posted my Africa Gallery awhile ago, you posted some pictures of you Col. Simpson that were absolutely wonderful. In fact, I went back to Eureka and purchased another one of Simpson's female retinue because I wanted to do one with an umbrella just like you did. That said if you have things you have done associated with this type of project or with figures you think would enhance what I'm doing, please feel free to post them here... I'd love another Col. Simpson moment. Richard
-
Inso’s posting about the missing engines on my Eagle gave me the motivation to get the job done. Really there wasn’t much to finishing it up… getting the spacecraft out of the cabinet where it is stored was the hardest part. Since I’m adding the new picture of the now finished Eagle I decided to include some space bugs I just finished as well. These are entirely a result of an inspirational work by Alex Bews entitled “Space Hulk.” While his bugs are nicer and his painting is the best, I loved the idea so I decided to make my own version using some Heroclix creatures that I got for 25 cents each at my Heroclix store (yes, I do have a Heroclix store… that’s So Cal for you) and a plastic wall I found in a pile of broken toys at the swap meet for 50 cents. I don’t know the names of the Heroclix figures because their bases were missing. I’m not sure how I will use the bugs, but I’m glad I have them.

I found in a pile of broken toys at the swap I don’t know the names of the Heroclix figures because their bases were missing.
The bugs look like 'The Brood', they first appeared as enemies of the X-Men.
-
Dr., that is what they are. The four on the ground are Brood Warriors. The one on the wall came with wings that I cut off and is probably a queen, but I couldn't find that same figure on eBay when I did my check. Thanks for clearing that up. Richard

Not to get too nerdy and space-button counter, but I think the model you have is the Mattel toy Eagle:
This one is approx. 30 inches long, as opposed to the MPC kit which is (a mere!) 22 inches. Also not easy to come by, so an excellent find.
-
Overlord, that is the one I have though mine required a lot of work to bring it back to a useable condition. The difference in length between the 30" you mentioned and the 27"/maybe 28" of mine is that mine was missing the rear engine assembly. Even covered with dry mud and missing lots of parts it was a beautiful toy. When I saw that the exterior piping was in perfect shape I knew that $15 was a great price, and that it could be brought back to a condition worth having. I got it several years ago, and I have never seen another during my weekend swap meet trips.

Paul, you are a very lucky guy. I would probably kill for this model. In the moment I saw auctions at ebay worth 195 GBP (stupid!). This model fits well with the Croocked Dice stuff and is perfectly made for 7TV. Hope to find one for a acceptable prize.
-
When I "borrow" an idea from someone I try to remember where I got it and give credit if I do a posting that focuses on that work. When I posted my East Riding Corporate Wars figures/security, I knew I had taken the color scheme from one of the LAF members, but I couldn't remember where I got it. Today I found out, and I want to say that color scheme I used for my long-haired Corporate Enforcers was taken from the work of Malebolgia... and much appreciated by me. Richard
-
Wow Richard, that is great to read. Thank you for the praise. Always humbling to inspire others and I must say your group looks excellent. I have lots of slicks primed, waiting for paintjobs...someday :)
That spaceship is epic by the way, perfect for our little miniature games. Too bad the eBay prices are ludicrous.
-
Malebolgia, I love your stuff, and when I saw that figure I knew you had captured the look I wanted for mine. Thanks again for the great work. Often the most difficult part of completing one of these figures is coming up with a creative color scheme, and you really hit it out of the part with that one. You're right about the Eagle. It is a wonderful ship, and I was extremely lucky to find the one I did at such a great price. I plan to some additional pieces tomorrow; hope you'll take a look. Richard
-
Most of the spacecraft I will be using with this collection were marketed with the release of the various Star Wars movies. The one that I am posting today is Slave 1 which set on the horizontal immediately looked to me like the perfect galactic freighter. I modified the cockpit windshield to make it encompass a smaller area and did a few other minor modifications… then I gave it a new paint job. Because I found it at the swap meet it only cost me about $3. I’m also including a picture of another spaceship crew that is once again composed of Heroclix figures which I simply rebased and repainted. The punishment trees are Warmachine. They seemed an appropriate element for a tough frontier planet out on the rim of the Verse.

Your project seems to get better and better with each new addition. Excellent, inspirational work!
-
The Mattel Eagle for $15! Oh you lucky man! No jealous at all. Not one bit ;)
-
Predatorpt, thanks for the generous words and for taking the time to write. I am really trying to post items as I finish them... I haven't been good at that in the past, but I'm really working at it this time. I tend to be a guy who likes to post the finished diorama-style layout all at once, but this time I hope to show all or most of the pieces as completed and then post the big finished gallery. We'll see; so far so good.
uti long smile, always great to hear from you. You are absolutely right about the Eagle... I bought it several years ago at the swap meet and have never seen another there since at any price nor have I seen any of the pieces of one. Change of subject: did you see my Gangsters "And Stuff" Gallery? Among the "And Stuff" portion are your Ghostbusters... great figures.
Richard

Love your stuff, but didn't see those! What thread is it in?
-
uti long smile, they are posted on the LAF Pulp page with the title Large 28mm Gangsters "And Stuff" Gallery. I posted about 5 or 6 sample pictures but if you click on the link to the gallery it is huge... about 150 pictures. I have your Ghostbusters (Paranormal Exterminators) in a street fight with Stay Puft and Gumby. I also have them fighting the paranormal in a sewer. They are part of my Gordon Institute For Archeology And Paranormal Study. Pictures of the large Gordon Institute campus, including some pictures of your Ghostbusters, are also part of the "And Stuff" element of the gallery. Hope you will take a look; I think you will smile. You can go direct to the gallery at www.warin15mm.com/28mm-Gangsters---Stuff.html

I'm always surprised at how rarely those racks of Menoth show up outside of War Machine. They fit so well in Grimdark and post apoc future, as well as general horror and fantasy settings. Guess they are kind of expensive, like many Privateer models.
-
Hobby Services, I agree. I think what I call "punishment trees" are great pieces, and I believe they will work really well with my space project. Richard
-
Amazing! Looked through that gangster thread but must have missed the link! As ever, brilliant work.
-
uti long smile, glad you gave the gangsters a look and enjoyed the gallery. Richard

I believe this spacecraft was marketed with the release of one of the Star Trek movies in 1994. It is identified as a Paramount Pictures toy. It’s 14 inches long and was particularly attractive to me because it had a bulk that made it a credible freighter. As is the case with all of my spacecraft, I got this one at the swap meet. It required no repair work other than a new paint job. Because the focus of my layout will be a frontier/rim of the Verse port, I thought it would be appropriate to have an assortment of “working girls.” They are from Heroclix (repaints) and Reaper. The land vehicles are swap meet finds. I have no information about the walker. The tracked vehicle is a 1989 Hasbro toy. The driver is from the Atlantis the Lost Empire command vehicle… goggles added using Plastruct plastic rod. I gave both new paint jobs.

While my plan for this collection is not limited to the plot line of Firefly and Serenity, that series and movie are central to what drew me to work on this collection, and central to that plot is the threat/fear of the Reavers. As far as I know the only company that makes Reavers is Sgt Major Miniatures who makes them under the name Space Cannibals. I picked mine up at Historicon in 2012… four packs of five figures each. Great figures. The space ship I have adopted as a Reaver ship is the Y Wind marketed with the release of one of the Star Wars films. The large versions of these Star Wars fighters can easily be made to look like multi-figure-crew ships… at least to my eye. As always, I picked mine up at the swap meet. Because it was in pretty bad shape when I found it, I got it for $1. It required some repair work but nothing too difficult given that Reaver ships have a pretty rough look to them anyway.(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3479_zpsmhqctgay.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3479_zpsmhqctgay.jpg.html)(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3480_zpshac8xqvi.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3480_zpshac8xqvi.jpg.html)(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3481_zpsqvy6j1pt.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3481_zpsqvy6j1pt.jpg.html)(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3482_zpsj5jyolen.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3482_zpsj5jyolen.jpg.html)(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3483_zpsvlilfv2v.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3483_zpsvlilfv2v.jpg.html)(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3484_zpsb25qq8ag.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3484_zpsb25qq8ag.jpg.html)(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3485_zps8mpbjgfh.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3485_zps8mpbjgfh.jpg.html)

Very cool, I wasn't aware of those figures. They look the part!
-
Brilliant stuff!
Although that Y-Wing looks in too good repair for a Reaver ship! lol
-
Your Reavers are spot on. Loving that big Y wing too. I always preferred the Y wing better than the X wing.
-
The Sgt. Major Reavers/Space Cannibals were a lucky find. And jamesmanto, I take a shot at beating this Y-Wing up a little more before the project is done... still needs some thinking to help decide upon the doable ugly. Thanks to all for taking the time to write. Richard

Between your swap meets (and a Heroclix store - seriously, an entire STORE?) and Eilif's thrift stores, I think Kentucky has some of the crappiest flea markets, thrift stores, and ... well, we don't really have swap meets.
Good jobs on all of those. I always wonder about the civilians and other 'working girls' when I see folks post them. Are they playable as a group, or do you intend to use them more as 'scenery' or obstacles?
Dave
-
I like civilians on the table. It helps it come alive to me. They can also be fun to paint.
I keep hoping that they can become part of the game as a moving obstacle or an objective or a source of Intel.
But usually they're just part of the terrain.
-
James I share your love of terrain and civilians for their own sake. In the Orange County area of Southern California there are still a number of really great hobby shops dealing with trains, models, and miniatures Arnie's Trains, Brookhurst Hobbies and Majestix for the Heroclix). But having a shop dedicate to Heroclix came as a surprise to me when I found it a year or so ago. It's doors are only open four days and for four hours each of those days... Patrick the owner does most of his business with on-line sales. The store has thousands of Heroclix singles ranging in price from 25 cents up. I think Patrick was once the world champion Heroclix player. In the last week my attention has been drawn to the Heroclix-like Wizards of the Coast Star Wars figures... some really great "civilian stuff there.
Dave this is where you will probably lose interest in what I do because this is where I tell you (are you sitting?) that I don't game. If you want to see where this collection is ultimately going, check out my recently completed Gangsters "And Stuff" Gallery (it's big... approximately 150 pictures) at www.warin15mm.com/28mm-Gangsters---Stuff.html

Not gaming isn't sad, at all. I like to think some of us are, basically, less serious model rail roaders. We have significant overlap with those guys, though they seem to be fascinated with what gauge train should fit on what gauge rail, and whether that building material was available in the 1930s based upon layouts etc...
We just like our spaceships and mobsters and castles and other cool things.
Also, does it count as gaming when I just keep building and painting stuff, but never actually throw any dice? Maybe 1 time ever 6 months I get to actually play. The kids do love to steal my creations and toss some Legos on them, so that's always good for me.
Regardless, always enjoy your posts and your projects.
Dave

Good summation, I don't play often enough to legitimately call my productions 'game pieces' :)
-
Dr. and Dave, good to hear that shouldn't feel too odd about not gaming. I have never hidden the fact, but I sometimes feel a little odd admitting that putting together these large collections and galleries is what I do, and that's enough for me. Tomorrow I plan to post another spacecraft, a couple more ambassador types, and a few more vehicles. I'm having fun! Richard
-
Well as long as you're having fun without disturbing the peace of frightening the horses it's good!
-
My knowledge of Star Wars spacecraft is limited so I am not certain that this one has a Star Wars background, but I believe it does. I was attracted to it because its box-like shape said freighter to me, and I like that. The two ambassador-style figures are from Iron Kingdoms. The only modification done on these is to the one on the right (in red). I got it at a great price because that figure’s arms were missing from the pack. I used arms from Heroclix figures as replacement. The vehicles, like the spacecraft, were purchased at the swap meet. Every once in awhile I find one of these little vehicles for 50 cents or a dollar and there is something about their shape that is unique and fun and that I believe will paint up in an interesting way… these were no disappointment.

I really like what you have done with the Reavers, as I am currently working on a Serenity project myself. To be honest I haven't been particularly impressed with the quality of the sculpts shown in the photos on the SMM website, they look pretty crude for some reason (their Mal in particular). But you have made them shine through. What were your feelings on them? Was the sculpting quality ok?
-
The_Baron, I really like the Sgt Major Space Cannibals/Reavers. There are 20 of them... 10 with guns and 10 with blades. If you have a close look at the ones I posted you will see that while all 20 are different poses they are not 20 completely different figures. I'm just guessing that there are probably 6 to 10 different figure types (bodies and heads) that are reconfigured to provide the 20 different figures that you get... I hope that makes sense. A few of the figures had mold lines that needed some cleaning and there was a little flashing on some of them, but nothing significant. I painted these figures black and then dry brushed the clothing, hair and armor so I was relying on the sculpts to provide the detail you see. The only thing I painted (as opposed to dry brushed) was the skin and eyes. I would buy them again. Hope that helps. Richard

Excellent thank you for the reply Richard, much appreciated! They certainly have an appeal to them, I might try a couple of head swaps with them so they aren't all moustachioed dudes with long hair, I think maybe some yelling zombie heads might look good also (think the Reaver who is in the serenity cargo hold after the mule crash). The only other option I could find for them would be to use the Mantic Plague zombies, but these would require fairly heavy conversion...
-
Nice use of the Runabout earlier in the thread; I've often thought the old Ertl (if that's what it is) model kit would make a good ship for 28mm gaming. I even asked a friend if he still had his but it has long since gone to the plastic graveyard.
-
tomcat51, that is the story of my spacecraft collection... it is wonderful (though often broken) toys that have been thrown away and found by me at my local swap meet.

I believe it's Mandalorian by the wings, and they've shown similar arrangements in both the Clone Wars AND Rebels cartoons.

When I began putting the pieces of this project together about eight years ago, I believed it would be composed of odds-and-ends figures drawn from a number of different manufacturers and very few that were purposely manufactured with Space as a focus. At that time I had a lot of Heroclix, some Sgt. Major and some Reaper, and some Privateer Press. Although I have a few 40K figures, my attraction to a Space collection did not and does not have a general Space Marine/40K focus. In the few months I have been painting this collection my awareness of what is in fact available has exploded. I have added to my collection figures from Colony 87, Lead Adventure/Astropolis, Disney Park Star Wars Collectors Packs, Moonraker, East Riding Turnkey (Mega Minis Sci Fi), Action Fleet and most recently Wizards of the Coast/Star Wars. Obviously I had a lot to learn. My next few postings will include repaints of the Wizards of the Coast figures.

I’m really enjoying these figures… nice sculpts, easy to paint, and they offer a huge variety of wonderful figure types to populate my space world/universe. I was hoping they would make the many-breasted Askajian, but no such luck. I’ve been buying Wizards of the Coast on Troll And Toad… excellent selection, great prices, and the service is excellent.

Dave, I always appreciate getting information about the toys I find at the swap meet. Thank you. Richard

Most but not all of the buildings that will make up my Space community/port are Sci Fi buildings from Monolith Designs. Two weekends ago I found a couple of domed plastic containers at the swap meet that appeared to me to have potential for repurposing into buildings that would work well next to the ones from Monolith. I used Duplos to define the entrances and covered both the containers and the Duplos with Squadron Green putty. Once the putty was dry I sanded the putty until it offered a texture that I thought was right for the buildings’ exteriors. When that was done I made doors from Evergreen plastic and painted the buildings in the color scheme I intend to use one my other buildings. Pretty happy with the results.

Duplo!
I like the irregular door pattern. I've never used Squadron, what is it like?
-
Dr., I love Duplos. When I scratch build buildings such as the pub and row houses I did for my Victorian collection I use Duplos for the inner skeleton and glue Evergreen and JTT plastic to the exterior to provide the detail look (brick, stone, wood paneling, etc). The beauty of Duplos is they provide a strong structure and perfect angles and heights, and compared with Legos (the more mature version) they are cheap. I get mine at the swap meet and even at the swap meet there is a big difference between the cost of Legos and Duplos. Furthermore, because Duplos are much bigger than Legos, they are much easier to use. For basing and the minor sculpting work that I do, I use yellow gray Milliput (the red and white box), but for simple fill work or for providing texture (as with these buildings) Squadron Green Putty is great. You can smooth it over a surface like the plastic containers, let it dry for a couple hours and then sand it to the the texture you want... good stuff. Richard
-
Those buildings are terrific. The textures are lovely. And the irregular shapes on the door look just right for sci-fi. I'd never considered using Duplos before, but now I see a trip to the toy store in my immediate future. I can see where the larger size will be a marked advantage for terrain building.
-
Dr. and Michka, here’s a picture of my use of Duplos in creating the row houses for my Victorian White Chapel area. I’ve also attached a picture from my Victorian Gallery of the finished row houses and pub I built using Duplo skeletons. As I indicated earlier Duplos provide a great skeleton for the construction of buildings… strength and true lines.

I continue to enjoy the great variety of wonderful figure types offered by the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars line of figures… the list of figures is huge and the sculpts are really very good. Finding these figures has caused me to rethink how I am going to focus the direction of this collection. While Firefly/Serenity remains a central inspiration, my port city will definitely be trending to the look of something more like Star Wars in terms of its population. Anyway, last night and today I completed work on three WotC Gungan on Kaadu(s). Really beautiful figures. I rebased and repainted them. The only modification work I did other than the rebasing was to reposition the lance arms on two of the figures to give the three figures a slightly different look.

Those houses based on Duplo are certainly impressive. That's a clever use of them.
Great little street scene.
-
Thank you for the house skeleton shot. I can't get over how many problems blocks that size will solve for my own building projects. So much easier then working with foamcore.
Last night I went looking for Duplo at the toy store. The prices were a bit steeper then I was comfortable with. So I'll be heading to Goodwill tomorrow. Yet another thing to look for when I go to the flea markets.
-
Some cool modelling & painting there. What manufacturer are the ladies of negotiable virtue plying their trade outside the Four Bells from?
-
negotiable virtue
That's a euphemism I haven't heard before. :)
Useful for politicians as well!
-
Genghis, thanks for the kind words about the buildings. The three women holding parasols outside the Four Bells are "Rotten Belles" by Malifaux/Wyrd. I liked the figures and elected to clean them up a little and use them as "ladies of negotiable virtue" rather than dead belles with no virtue at all. The fourth woman next to the lamp is by Eureka... she came with another lamp, but it didn't match the lamps I was using throughout my city so I traded her lamp out for one like the others I used. Richard
-
Ta. How hard was it to un-undead the young ladies? I like the figures, but am pretty rubbish at anything but the most basic of sculpting, the Eureka figure is a good pointer though.
-
Genghis, bringing the ladies back to life was mainly in the choice of paint. There were a couple of instances where a dress had slightly larger holes than I wanted so I put a tiny touch of Squadron Green Putty on the end of a toothpick, place it in the hole and then smoothed it with the tip of my finger... no talent required at all. They are really wonderful figures to paint. They are from the days when Wyrd's Malifaux figures were metal... probably still around.

Cool, I'll see if I can hunt some down to add to my VSF civvies. (And also probably serve double duty for some of my sci-fi gaming.)
-
Genghis, good luck with your hunt and project. Richard

This morning I finished work on a Ronto with a Jawa and a Dewback plus rider. The Ronto and Dewback are Star Wars Action Fleet figures. The Jawa is a modified Wizards of the Coast Jawa. I used the WotC Jawa because the Action Fleet Jawa is much smaller than my 28mm figures. The Action Fleet Dewback comes with a mounted Stormtrooper but because Stormtroopers will not be part of my Space collection and because the Action Fleet Stormtrooper is too small, I gave the Dewback with another WotC figure as its rider.

-
Nice work on the Ronto and the Dewback. The Dewback rider is especially good. I love the Action Fleet figures. Been using loads of them for my Star Wars projects for years now.
-
Nice work on these pieces.I have them and more.
Could you not use the small action fleet Jawa as a child?
-

Ok
I'm going to say it
That is genius!
Consider it stolen.
Thanks
-
Michka, thank you. I am a fan of your work. I think the Dewback rider worked out really well. I actually retained the bottom have of the Stormtrooper’s body, did a little carving and putty work on it and attached the upper half of a modified WotC figure to that. I just finished two Bantha using the same approach… lower half of rider Action Fleet, upper half of rider WotC.
Manic_miner, thanks for writing and the kind words. I hadn’t thought of using the small Action Fleet Jawa as a child.
steders, thank you. I think you’ll enjoy using Duplos. They make construction a lot easier for me, and the end product is very strong.
-
Brilliant idea using Duplo
-
uti, always good to hear from you. I’m not entirely sure how a person decides that scratch building needs to be part of their bag of tricks if they are going to get the items they want for their collections, but for me one of the keys elements to taking on scratch building was deciding the type of materials I could comfortably work with. I think because I grew up making models, plastic seemed to be a natural material for me to work with, and Duplos have really made my scratch building much better than it would have been without them. At this point my scratch building materials are pretty well established as Evergreen Plastic, JTT Plastic, Plastruct Plastic, Duplos (and some Legos), yellow-grey (red and white box) Milliput, Squadron Green Putty, Krazy Glue, Plastruct Plastic Weld, and bits of broken toys found at the swap meet.
-
I use lego and duplo mainly to make the boxes to contain the rubber when I make moulds - but for the same reasons. Strength of the interlocked corners and good right angled corners.
The wife builds stuff with my lego. I just use it for scaffolding ... :D
-
steders, thank you. I think you’ll enjoy using Duplos.
Hold on, are you saying I'm a baby?!!! I can use bigboy Lego you know!!
I've told a few mates about the Duplo internal structure and they all thought it was a great idea, I expect the charity shops will get hit pretty hard
-
steders, anybody can be creative with Legos. It takes a real man to make it happen with Duplos... and they're a lot cheaper!
-
I spent a couple days painting droids, lots of droids. Most of them are from Wizards of the Coast (R4s, R5s, protocol droid, med droid, power droids…) A few are from Disney Parks Star Wars Collection Packs. All of the BB8s are from the Disney collection packs, and all but one of the R2s and CP30s are Disney. Since most of the droids will be used in and around the town I based only a couple on “metal” floors to make them more appropriate for use in ships… I will be building a ship interior as one the later projects in this collection.(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3662_zps5mmdnwzl.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3662_zps5mmdnwzl.jpg.html)

I was very surprised by the large number of different droids in the WotC Star War collections, and most of the ones I wanted were $2.50 or less. I think I got my R4s and R5s for $1.50 each at Troll and Toad.
-
There are a few female variants of the basic 3P0 look out there that you might want to look into. I'm pretty sure that both Reaper and Bombshell each have one.
You might also consider modifying a 3P0 into C-3PX...
-
SotF, I haven't seen the Bombshell figures, but I did check out the ones that Reaper has, and Jeeves/Clockwork Robot is part of my collection... just forgot to include him/it in the pictures. There are a number of the ones that Reaper offers that are interesting: Automations, ALF24/Robot Assistant, and Marie/She-Bot, but WotC spoiled me in terms of price and look, so I loaded up on those.

With Bombshell, it's M4R1A though there are several others that fit the Star Wars theme...a few of which might need a bit of modification by way of cut the blade of a sword off and use a either a bit of wire or acryllic rod for a lightsaber since they have at least one not-Jedi and another based on Slave Leia's costume...

As I’m sure I have said before, this project is a little unique in that with most of my project the great majority of the figures used were purchased years before the actual painting began. In this case, while I have been putting the pieces together for about eight years, I have found most of the figures that will be included only since I began the actual work on the project. The Moonraker Miniatures’ Spacelords is one of those recent finds. The figures pictured here are from their Personalities line. They were a pleasure to paint and work really well with the Astropolis and Colony 87 figures I have recently added to this collection.

Nice minis! I have one of those, but till now didn't know what range he came from.
-
vodkafan, I'm glad I could ID the figure you have. Since I always hope that people who post figure pictures will ID the figures, I do my best to provide figure identification when I post... probably fail from time to time, but I try. Richard

While the Beyond the Gates of Antares figure line is of no direct interest to me in terms of my Space project, the Boromite Matriach was something I couldn’t resist.

For a couple days I’ve been painting Colony 87 figures. They are absolutely wonderful. The six pictured here represent one of the two figure packs. I should say that I searched the internet for pictures of painted Colony 87 figures. I didn’t find a lot of them, but I did borrow color scheme ideas from a number of the figures I found. LAF’s Alex Bews’ figures were a great inspiration. The original line draws were a great help too.

Nice work on some fantastic figures. I really like your porter and governor's wife.
-
Great output! I'm very fond of the Spacelords figures, and your set of Colony 87 figures is great! The varied paint schemes still work together very nicely.
-
Thanks to you both for taking the time to write and for the kind words. I have fallen in love with the Colony 87 figures and gave them my best effort. I'll be finishing the last of the second group of six today and plan to post those soon... probably tomorrow. Jon Boyce says he'll be coming out with the third and last set of six this year, and I am looking forward to adding those to the collection. I'm sure I've said this before, but when I began putting this collection together several years ago (the gathering phase of the project) I thought I would be building it around odds and ends of whatever I could find, but with Colony 87, Moonraker, Astropolis, a 40k oop genestealer and inquisitor and the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars figures my Space population has really expanded beyond anything I thought was possible when I began. Thanks again to writing. Richard
-
Some more very nice figures. I've just started painting some of my Colony 87 figures and am shamelessly going to steal the red hat on the Trader dude idea in order to add a splash of colour.
-
Your Colony 87 figures are great. I like how you get that velvety-looking texture on certain clothes.
-
vodka fan, the Colony 87 figures are wonderful. I feel lucky that I have the two sets (12 figures) that I have. I was actually nervous about painting them because I like them so much. LAF is the home of some wonderful painters, people who really know how to use a brush. I have come to love my painting style, but I fully understand that I am not really a painter. I am more a paint applier. I dry brush over a dark (usually black) base color, and I count on the lines of the figure/the sculpture to provide the character and depth to my paint application. What painting ability I have I use on the skin tones. My great contribution to the process is that I have become a pretty good dry brusher, and I take my selection of colors pretty seriously. Thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to write. I hope to have the last of the Colony 87 figures posted tomorrow. Richard
-
Here are the other six Colony 87 figures. Jon Boyce is planning to have the last “wave” of six figures available (kickstartered) this year. The picture of the single figure is the Oathpourer from Dark Age… beautiful miniature.

-
Excellent work on the Colony figures, I need to get on mine. The color scheme on the minister is particularly good.
That Oathpourer is a cool miniature, I hadn't seen that one.
-
These are great. I love the advisor too! How do Colony 87 and the Spacelords range compare in size?
-
Dr., I look forward to seeing your Colony 87 figures when completed. I'm very happy with the Oathpourer... has a certain Dune quality to it.
blacksoilbill, thanks for the kind words. I can't recommend the Colony 87 figures too much... wonderful figures. They are the same size as the Spacelords... look good side-by-side. I checked to make sure before writing this.
Thanks again to both of you for writing. Richard

Thanks for checking. I have Colony 87 (painting the priestess at the moment actually) and totally agree with your praise for them. It's the Spacelords I've been wondering about!
-
blacksoilbill, the Astropolis by Lead Adventure Miniatures are also great looking figures that go really well both in look and size with the Colony 87 and Spacelords figures. Richard
-
Yes, I teetered on the edge of grabbing them during the Kickstarter, but had already blown my budget last year. Perhaps this year!
-
blacksoilbill, the Astropolis are worth making a wish-list priority. I'll post mine soon.
-
I just finished painting my Astropolis figures from Lead Adventure Miniatures. They are great figures that have the same character feel as the Colony 87 and Moonraker figures… and fun to paint.

I'm jealous watching you tear through all these miniatures- because I have almost all the Spacelords civilians, Astropolis, and Colony miniatures you have shown- but unpainted!
I really like the commanding officers, and great idea putting the sitting robot on a wheeled conveyance. I was at a loss when it came to a way to use the little guy.
-
Cool! I still haven't put my hands on mine, I'm jealous! :)
-
I do get a little driven during these projects.
-
Great work on these!

Thanks Bill.

In putting together my Space project I am focused on giving that port/community a very diverse look in terms of population, cultures and technology. In keeping with that approach I am including the Lead Adventure Miniatures’ Post Apoc merchants. I love the look of the figures and I think they will be a great addition to the diverse look of that community. On top of that the figures are great… lots of personality.

-
Ooh. Those Post Apocalypse figures look great. I can totally see them standing around a starport.
-
Michka, thanks for writing and the kind words. Lead Adventure Miniatures makes some great figures and the post apoc merchants are some of my favorites. While having a different general look, I think they have the feel of the Astropolis merchant figures and will work well on the same table. Right now I am working on the entertainment figures for my cantina... should post them soon. Hope you will check them out. Richard

In putting this collection /the spaceport, together the look of Eavesdown Docks from Firefly and the Mos Eisley from Star Wars are what I hope to achieve. The Mos Eisley cantina is an essential element of that look and so putting together a cantina for this collection is essential. Throughout my work on other figures I have been working on the cantina’s patrons and most/not all of them are done, but it is only in the last week that I have completed the figures that will serve as the staff and entertainment for the cantina, and they are the focus of this posting. Music for the cantina will be provided by the Max Rebo Band and The Modal Nodes. I was thrilled to find that Hallmark ornaments made the three central characters for the Max Rebo Band back in 1999, and they are perfect for 28mm. All that was required was repainting and basing. The Modal Nodes are a different story. Action Fleet makes one of The Modal Nodes, but Action Fleet are very small figures… not an impossible modification, but far from easy. West End also made a Mos Eisley Cantina pack, but it was “true 25mm” and thus also small, but it did have two of The Modal Nodes and the bartender in its favor. I was lucky to find two of the West End cantina packs on eBay at $5 and $6 including shipping so I got both thinking I would probably ruin one of them in the process of modifying them up to 28mm. Luckily that wasn’t the case. All six figures came out of the modification process in good shape. The modification turned out to be pretty easy. I removed the heads and legs from the West End figures and kept the upper bodies with the arms, musical instruments and glasses/cups/mugs (in the case of the bartenders). I then gave The Modal Nodes new heads from Wizards of the Coast figures and new heads came for the bartenders from WotC and Heroclix. The legs are all taken from WotC figures. I added a little Milliput to lengthen shirts and hide cut lines plus with The Modal Nodes some Milliput was added to broaden the shoulders. Once the modifications were done new bases were added and the figures were painted. The Alien Exotic Dancers are from Reaper and those only required painting and basing. The robot waitress is a Disney Park Collection piece and also required only repainting and basing. The space-table games is a game taken from a broken Star Wars spaceship. The figures playing are slightly modified WotC figures and the tiny spaceships they are holding as game pieces are from Heroclix figures (name unknown… I got them in a 25-cents-each tub sans bases). The chess-like game board is completely Heroclix… game board, and players. I’ll be posting the cantina’s patrons in the near future.

These look amazing. I love your dedication to populating an exciting game table. I love the conversions.
-
Great work on sourcing and converting those cantina figures! And the alien dancers are brilliant! It seems that wherever you go in the galaxy, breasts seem to be universally popular....someone should do a scientific study
-
Fantastic. They're iconic characters.
-
Thanks for writing and for the generous comments. The cantina element of this project has been central to my thinking since I began collecting the pieces nearly a decade ago. It's a great feeling seeing it come together. The construction of the cantina interior will come late in the project (maybe in May) and will involve Legos, Duplos, JTT, Evergreen, and Plaststurt plastic as is the way of all my interior constructions. While painting the other non-cantina figures in this project, I've kept my eyes open for figures I could modify for use as the cantina patrons, and as I found them I modified them rather than doing them as a group modified and painted all at once. Consequently I have most of the standing patrons done. The seated patrons have been collected but won't be worked on until the structure is ready for them. I plan to post the standing patrons later today or tomorrow. Thanks again. Richard
-
Can't add much besides... Oh HELL yeah!
....someone should do a scientific study
I'll get right on that!

I’ve been working for awhile on the patrons for my cantina and finished the last of what I believe will be the standing patron figures… the seated figures will be done when I build my cantina interior. Most of these figures are modified Wizards of the Coast Star Wars figures. The modifications generally involved the removing of weapons from hands and replacing those weapons with plastic rod to serve as cups. Some of their arms were repositioned as well. The next largest group of figures used are Heroclix, and in addition to those is a figure that is part of the Disney Star Wars Parks Collection and another figure, Conehead, that I found at the swap meet for 50 cents (no idea what toy/game Conehead was originally part of).

From my perspective, one of the great attractions of this “Space” project is that it offered the opportunity for a great variety of populations/races, cultures, fashions, and technologies. I have long been a fan of some of the figures from Privateer Press (Warmachine, Iron Kingdoms, Dark Age), and I saw this as my opportunity to incorporate some of them into one of my collections as a crew passing through this spaceport on the rim of the Verse.

-
Those latest additions look like they fit into your sci-fi setting just fine. Did you have to modify any of them?
-
Dr, I think the only significant modification I did to these was done to the second figure from the left in the first picture. I replaced the edged weapon he was holding originally with a futuristic gun he is now carrying in a rather casual fashion.
-
Those PP figs look great: not at all out of place. Hooded rifleman and man in black from the second photo are my favourites.
-
They fit in very well. I have a couple of those got second hand, and as per usual I didn't know what range they were from, so thanks again for the ID
-
No question that Privateer Press make some great looking figures, and I was really happy to be able to work some of them into my Space project. Thanks for the kind words.
-
Privateer's also a good source for alien critters (especially Everblight and many Skorne warbeasts) and robots (varying from the steamtech 'jacks to the anime-styled Retribution myrmidons to the art-deco droids of Convergence). Many of the Retribution and Convergence models are perfect scifi sculpts with no mods required as well. And it's hard not to like Cygnar's various "lightning storm" models for suitably-crazed Mad Science practitioners.
-
War In 15MM, an AWESOMEly masterminded job as always, CONGRATULATIONS! :-*
I really like the clever way you are using Clix and Wizard's SW figures - people usually are a bit snob concerning them, but you got some really ace conversion/brushwork jobs there!
Looking forward to see your "spacey town" scenery! ;)
-
Hobby Services, thanks for the insights on Privateer Press... great figures, but I admit that my knowledge of how broad their offering is was limited.
Dinohunterpoa, thanks so much for the generous comments. I've probably said this before, but I'm not afraid of repeating myself when I say that at the start of this project/during the collection phase eight or more years ago, I really wasn't too deeply grounded in the kinds of Space-related figures that might be available, and since I wasn't really looking at giving this project a big 40k footprint, the Heroclix figures offered some options that I thought would work, and I am happy I brought them in... no snob me. But as I got into the actual painting and building phase of this project I found that there is a world probably should say universe) of great things coming on line or that I just hadn't heard of... Wizards of the Coast Star Wars, Astropolis, Colony 87, Moonraker, Privateer Press, Action Fleet, Victory Force and... This thing has really grown.

dinohunterpoa, my "Alliance" forces are AT-43... less heavily armored than space marines. I'm repainting and rebasing mine. I think my AT-43 "Alliance" force consists of 24 figures of which five are medical including two nurses. I love the shipping container hospital.

Pictures, pictures! :)
The container hospital is great indeed - as well as the nurses! ;D
I also like the Engineers very much - used them in an antarctic RPG adventure years ago!
And my UNA Steel Troopers (with the NVG heads) are the standard police force in my group's Cyberpunkish/Near Future RPG adventures! ;)

I have one mechanic with a wrench-like tool and one figure in an orange suit with something that looks like a hair dryer/probably a scope attached by cord to a hand-held case. They're both great figures. I'm just about done with them so will be posting the AT-43s soon. Today I'm going to post some of my spacecraft which are repurposed/slightly modified Star Wars' ships.
-
When I began collecting the pieces for this project the one thing that was readily available was spacecraft. Lots and lots of Star Wars’ spacecraft were easily had at the swap meet… most for $5 or less and in pretty good shape. Today things have changed and those same spacecraft are much harder to find and are selling for $5 and up. Anyway, these spacecraft were originally made for figures that are much larger than 28mm, but that was fine with me. I’m not doing Star Wars so with some simple modification to the canopy using a piece of Evergreen Plastic, one of these ships could become a much larger craft for a five or six member crew. At least that’s how it works in my little universe. The craft pictured here are all of the type mentioned above and have had their canopies shortened with a plastic strip thus allowing me to paint the front part of the previous canopy as a “glass” for the cockpit and the rear part of the old canopy the same color as the hull. The figure is a repainted and rebased Heroclix which I offer for scale.

I'm just about done with them so will be posting the AT-43s soon. Today I'm going to post some of my spacecraft which are repurposed/slightly modified Star Wars' ships.
AWESOME ships! The weathering is just perfect! And great work on that HeroClix Lex Luthor! :)
-
I have the one on the left. The other two look great. I've never seen them before. Are they actually called engineers on the package? I can't remember what the package mine came in said. Thanks for letting me see them. Richard

They are the Engineers of the Operation Frostbite set - hence the cold weather gear. They can be found in the Operation Frostbite Boxed Set (with rulebooks, tiles and scenic items) or in a smaller box with only the three miniatures. Noble Knight Games used to have them, but can't find in their website; check out Ebay for a seller from Singapore with lots of OOP At-43 miniatures at great prices! ;)
-
Thanks for letting me see them. Richard
Mate, you're always welcome! ;)

Check this out, minis included!

I'm in the US. However, there is a slight possibility that Operation Frostbite might be on the half price counter at one of the hobby shops nearby. I'll check Monday. Thanks for the follow-up on this . Much appreciated. And thanks too for the kind words about the spacecraft. I was so focused on the AT-43s that I missed that when you posted it. Richard

Richard, as I've said: You're always welcome! :)
I'll keep my fingers crossed for your "miniature hunting expedition" this week! :D
And please keep posting that AWESOME and HIGHLY INSPIRATIONAL stuff of yours! ;)

dinohunterpoa, look at what you caused me to do. When I woke up from my old-guy nap this afternoon I decided that I couldn’t wait until Monday to see if Operation Frostbite was actually gathering dust on the game shop discount shelf. I drove over to the store. I hunted around for about 30 minutes and then under a pile of unrelated stuff I saw a box that said AT-43 Operation Frostbite. Fortunately, the store owner who I have known for nearly 40 years was actually there on a Sunday so I took it to him and told him that the box looked like it had been around for ages and I would take it off his hands if he could see fit to sell to me for $15. He said okay so now because of your posting I have the very engineers you showed me only a couple hours ago. Thanks so much. Richard

Richard, this is just PERFECT! You've got a treasure for a bargain, VERY WELL DONE!!! :D
I'm really glad you got the Engineers, looking forward to see them (re)painted and added to your collection!
And as a bonus, you can give the two clusters of Elysium Crystals to a friend of yours who plays Frostgrave - or just use them as part of an ice planet scenery, just add a Wampa ot two! ;)
-
Those spaceships look great! :-* it's amazing how a little bit of plastic card makes them nearly unrecognisable! 8)
-
I think the Star Wars spaceships look much better at 28mm "scale". The one in the last pic is my favourite.
-
Nice work on those spaceships. I guess I've got to look for operation frostbite now...
I recently picked up a SW action figure ship with the intention of making it 28mm and your work inspires alot of confidence in the idea.
-
Thanks for the kind words… much appreciated. I’ve been very happy with the AT-43 figures and thanks to dinohunterpoa I was able to add a couple more very interesting figures from that line… Operation Frostbite. I am also extremely lucky to have been putting together my collection at a time five or so years ago when the Star Wars’ spacecraft were easily available at my swap meet a great prices… that’s not true today. I definitely think that with a small modification and a willingness to forget their origins those ships work out great for use with 28mm figures. That is particularly important in terms of this project because I am putting together a rough and tumble spaceport on the edge of the Verse, and for that I want to be able to line up about a dozen “parked” spacecraft. Thanks so much for writing, and I hope you will continue to follow my journey toward putting together my Space gallery.
-
I’ve recently finished two Action Fleet Banthas. They required some modification in that they were covered with some teddy bear fur and their riders are undersized for 28mm. My approach was to cut the fur off and replace it with Milliput scored to match the areas of the Banthas with plastic sculpted fur… worked pretty well. As for the riders, I kept the lower portion of the bodies with the legs and replaced the upper bodies and heads with the upper bodies and heads of figures from Wizards of the Coast. The Speeder Bike is also by Action Fleet. To make the bike rider match 28mm figures more effectively I cut the head off of the Action Fleet figure and replaced it with the head of a Wizards of the Coast figure. I also painted up two of the Rey’s speeders by Hot Wheels and again improved the look of the riders in terms of size by replacing the heads with Wizards of the Coast figures. I’m also including a picture of my second Action Fleet Dewback with modified rider… lower body kept; upper body replaced with Wizards of the Coast figure to enhance size.

OMG! :o Just... PERFECT! CONGRATULATIONS! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I never ever had even remotely thought to have all that work to cut the "teddy bear fur" on the AF Banthas and greenstuff some proper fur on them! When I used a couple of them in a game of SW RPG eaons ago, the players said they were actually elephants covered in Wookie fur! lol
Great work on that Dewback, BTW! ;)
-
Latest stuff looks great. I am not too familiar with the Star Wars universe but I recognise the speeder bikes. I am itching to see what your spaceport will look like. I have a feeling it's going to be huge!
-
What about adding some wings to the sides of one of Raes speeders? Just to make it look different to the other? Or maybe even attach a couple of engine pods to the sides? Some of the pod racer minis would have been perfect to cut up for that.
-
dinohunterpoa, thanks for the kind words about the Banthas and Dewback. Replacing the teddy bear fur with yellow grey (red and white box) Milliput was really pretty easy. Once the Milliput was attached in a thickness I liked I just scored it with the blade of a hobby knife… pretty easy.
vodkafan, I am no Star Wars expert myself. I learned more about Star Wars putting together this collection for my Firefly/Star Wars-like spaceport. It will be huge. I will be using two 5 ft. x 7 ft. tables, more than a dozen parked spacecraft, a military base, two repair units, two gun towers, market stalls, nomad-style tents and a town of between 20 and 30 structures. I will also have a cantina interior and a spaceship interior. Hope to have it done before the end of June.
Andym, food for thought. Among the odds and ends that I have been collecting to add flavor to my market stalls and repair units are some Heroclix rocketeer style backpacks that have wings. I have a couple of boxes in my storage shed dedicated to that kind of stuff for this project, and I am hoping that in those are a couple more speeders found at the swap meet. When I collect this stuff for years in preparation for a project, I get some surprises when I start the work and begin digging around in what I have accumulated… sometimes nearly ten years earlier.

I really do appreciate your passion and drive... and no need to sleep! ;)

You mean June 2019 yes? ;)
-
I really enjoy your posts, especially how you can bring so many different pieces under one umbrella. The painted and modified figures are all done admirably.
-
dinohunterpoa and vodkafan, my craziness knows no/maybe few bounds.
Aquamarine, normally my projects are driven by both much loved figures and an exciting subject. My Victorian African adventure is a good example. This project was originally rooted in the subject Eavesdown Docks/Firefly) with few specific figures in mind. In the months since I began painting I have discovered large numbers of wonderful figures that have really got me excited, but they have also clouded the definition of where I will be taking this one. That said I am glad for the confusion, and I have no doubt that a clear direction will be revealed to me… probably in a dream!

Seriously: dreams are powerful. So go to sleep... and dream... NOW! ;)

About six years ago I happened upon a wonderful find at the swap it… a huge sandcrawler. While I have repeatedly stated in these postings that Star Wars is not the focus of this project, I have taken the fullest advantage of its equipment in putting this project together. I see the sandcrawler as a troop transporter for my Alliance forces. That said for the purposes of this photo I am offering the more traditional look of the sandcrawler with Jawas. The Jawas, which are repainted and rebased Wizards of the Coast Star Wars’ figures, offer some sense of the size of this sand crawler.
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j366/rgarretson/IMG_3920_zpsyzim6rzq.jpg~original) (http://s1082.photobucket.com/user/rgarretson/media/IMG_3920_zpsyzim6rzq.jpg.html)
-
Great model!
Looking forward to see your spaceport town and cantina! ;)
-
Damn. I've always wondered how that toy looks next to miniatures. Now I really do need one. Thanks for that.
And the head and body mods for the Action Fleet toys worked out fantastically.
-
Thanks to you both for writing. The sandcrawler is a great piece. It is a big toy... approx. 16 inches long by 8+ inches tall. It was a wonderful swap meet find. It cost me $20 which for me is big swap meet money, but a cheap price by non-swap meet standards. It is also the only one of that size I have ever seen at the swap meet in my 15 years of swap meet weekends. I'm very happy with the way it matches up with the Wizards of the Coast Jawas, and if I can fit it on my spaceport tables I think it will look good as an Alliance troop transport or mobile command center. I'm a little nervous about painting it, but when I do I believe I will just use its original color scheme.
Michka, I agree that the head swap with the speeder bike riders worked out great. The Action Fleet riders' bodies were in the ballpark size-wise with 28s (sitting helps), but their heads were small and by adding the Wizards of the Coast heads I think I got figures that work well with 28s.

Last week my Rogue Stars order arrived from North Star. At this point in my process the need for additional figures was very limited if it existed at all, but this new line of Space figures did offer some very nice pieces so I added a few to my already exploding collection… no regrets; they are beautiful. I picked up the Pirates, the Smugglers, the Crime Boss with his robot servant, and I was fortunate to have placed my order in time to include the limited addition figure, The Rogue, designed by Mark Copplestone. North Star provided a nice gallery of painted examples of these figures, and I took advantage of that and built my color schemes around the ideas North Star provided… I am shameless.

-
No shame needed sir....I expect a lot of us will copy the colour schemes in the book, I know I will.
-
Nice brushwork, I really do like your style! ;)
-
Thanks for the kind words. I've been really fortunate that a number of great Space figure lines have become available while I've been working on this project. North Star seems to be rolling Rogue Stars out in segments. I've noticed that three additional figures have become available since I placed my order (Thug, Big Bot, and Renegades). I'm happy with the ones I got and very pleased that I was able to get The Rogue which now appears to be gone from the list of available figures. Richard
-
... I was able to get The Rogue which now appears to be gone from the list of available figures.
I believe he was only available along with a purchase of the rules?
-
Dr., I didn't buy the rules. When I made my purchase, he was offered as a limited addition figure. I don't think he was available as a single-figure option very long.
Richard
-
Many/most of these figures are inspired by Alex Bews’ “The Galaxy Council.” If you are not familiar with that work, you are missing something great.

-
Great variety of figures. My favorite is the little guy being carried around by the robot.
-
Really like these last ones. But shouldn't the Galactic Council have bodyguards?
-
There are some great figures out there... far more than I realized when I began this project.
I'm thinking that the Galactic Council will be in the safe hands of the East Riding Corporate Wars' Enforcers and Slicks.
-

Oooh yes those are fantastic minis who will permit no nonsense
-
I just ordered four of the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars' (The Force Unleashed) Emperor's Shadow Guard #33 figures. They look great in the pictures, but WotC is a bit like Heroclix in that size is not consistent. My experience with WotC Star Wars' figures is that the non-human figures consistently work well with 28mm (who knows the real size of a space alien anyway), but the human figures can range in size from perfect to small. I don't know where the Shadow Guards will fit in in terms of size, but they look like a pretty impressive bodyguard in the picture.
-
My spaceport will have two spacecraft repair units. Keep in mind that the spaceport will be located on two 5 ft. x 7 ft. tables… a big area though I have no doubt that it will be a crowded place when done. Both of these repair units are repurposed GI Joe Headquarters playsets that I picked up for $3 each at the swap meet several years ago. The one that is posted here was missing its attached crane so I repurposed another broken toy to serve that purpose (painted yellow). The figures are Astropolis by Lead Adventure Miniatures used here to offer a reference for scale. The spacecraft is a broken Star Wars’ ship that I picked up in a pile of broken toys at the swap meet for $1. I thought it would paint up well to serve as a ship under repair in one of my repair units. The engine block to the left behind the spacecraft is another swap meet broken toy that I bought for 50 cents because I thought it looked like a space engine and would serve as a nice detail piece in the repair unit. Because I didn’t take before pictures of either of the ones I got at the swap meet, the before picture shown here is one I took off the internet. It too is missing its crane.

Sweet!!!!
Your swapmeet must be a glorious, glorious place.
-
Thanks Dr Mathias. You are absolutely right about my swap meet. It is a gem, and in this area a swap meet like mine is very rare. More and more the local swap meets are largely nothing more than outdoor weekend Dollar Stores. The beauty of my swap meet is that it still largely old stuff, people's "junk" like broken toys, and it is in the "junk" that the treasures can be found.
-
HUGE!!! Looks fantastic!

AWESOME!!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
My GF: "Let's put to use that old GI JOE Headquarters stored in the dungeon basement NOW!" lol

Great work! Love to see this project coming along and that repair station is a thing of beauty. I think we share the same philosopy of cheap-broken-toy-terrain. I get mine at resale shops around here that are a goldmine for this kind of thing.
-
Everyday I am thankful that there are children out there playing hard, having fun and breaking their toys so that I can pick them up cheap at the swap meet... the circle of life. I was very lucky to have found two of these GI Joe playsets in basically the same shape except my other one still has its original crane. If you notice in the picture of the original piece on the right side there is an orange attachment. I removed that when I permanently folded up the end pieces/wings on mine, and I turned that orange piece into a monitoring station which you can see near the rear of mine next to the row of tubes.

Nice work bringing the greebling that would otherwise be invisible into the useable section of the piece. Looks like you also turned what I think was the missile launcher into a piece of ground-level machinery.
Unfortunatley mine is sans-tower which is disappointing since for next year's Mech Attack game I'll be adding a tarmack and needing some kind of control-tower. Not worried though. Something will present itself as it always does!

Great scenery you're putting up there. I think I could see something similar happening here.. lol
Does the plastic take paint well? Some sort of trick to it? I find that most toys don't take paint that well.

That 7tv scenery is very inspring!

The Mega rig parts I have seem to be made of polyurethane. It can be harder to paint, but I've found that Krylon Camo paints (which have a little "FUsion for plastic" label) stick well to plastic. Even better if you lightly sand the plastic first.
-
I can't speak for painting the Mega-Rig, but I have used Vallejo acrylics on hard plastics and what I have heard referred to on LAF as bendies. I have had no problems. I do spray them with Dullcote when done to act as a stay-fast.

Earlier I indicated that I had ordered the WotC Emperor's Shadow Guard #33 figures but stated that I was unsure how they would work with my 28mm figures in terms of size since I had not had an in-person view of the actual figure/pictures only. Today my order arrived, and I can say now that the figures are beautiful and will be great with my 28s in terms of size.

In my desire to have lots of things happening on the streets of my spaceport, the option for a variety of speeder-style bikes is attractive. The classic/Star Wars’ speeder bikes are available from both WotC and Action Fleet. Rey’s speeder is available from Hot Wheels, and WotC also does a nice swoop bike. To add to this I have found three “bikes” from Heroclix that I am repurposing for my Space collection. My knowledge of Heroclix characters (DC and Marvel) is limited so pardon my lack of clear name id of these figures because in two of the cases their bases and thus their names were missing. One of the three is the 2 Gun Kid, a second is the “Archer” (name might be incorrect but close) and the third is a knight-like figure on a very space-looking bike. I have basically replaced the riders with what I regard as more appropriate figures from Heroclix and WotC. In the case of the third bike mentioned above, I needed to do a little modification of the bike itself to make it work. I took handlebars from the “Archer” bike to make it easier to attach a new figure in terms of that figure’s ability to steer the bike. I included one picture of the modified figures and bikes that have not as yet been repainted. This takes me to a total of 20 bikes for my spaceport using 6 different bike styles.

ol lol lol lol lol
BTW: lovely space bikes and riders! ;)
-
These look great. I have no particular Star Wars bent, I can take it or leave it, but I do like speeder bikes. I invested heavily in the Ramshackle speeder bike kickstarter a while back
-
Thanks for writing and for the kind words and faces. The repurposed bikes have been a lot fun putting together. I've just about finished with the painting of the two unpainted ones I posted here. This afternoon following my Saturday swap meet adventure I stopped by the Heroclix store to see if I could pick up a couple more items from the 50-cent bins that will allow me to do a couple more bikes/needed handlebars. The store owner told me that the bowman that I called the Archer is Hawkeye and the figure riding the very spaceship-looking bike is the Black Knight. Sounds good to me.
-
Looking forwards to seeing all your hard work come together. Your postings are appreciated, entertaining and provide a good service for finding scifi models and sources. I thought this picture will be inspiring and keeping with your vision.

Great picture. Thank you. As I mentioned when I began this "thread" most of my collections grow out of a theme that I am interested in and figures that I have seen and love. Because the theme and most of the figures are with me from the beginning the layout/diorama forms a rather clear mental picture for me almost from the beginning. This project is different in that is was driven by a theme... Firefly and Eavesdown Docks. That theme is still central to the look I hope to achieve when I construct the diorama and photograph the gallery, But when I began the project I really knew of very few figures that I could draw upon for use in it and thought that I would just be throwing together odds and ends to get the best result I could. Thus my early postings are of Heroclix figures that I felt would work with this project. It wasn't until I really got into the work that I began to find some wonderful, purpose-sculpted space (non-40k) figures that I love. Consequently, in viewing this thread I am sharing with you what I have found, and I hope it proves to be a map for others who are looking for interesting figures that can be incorporated into a space-related project. Still a lot to do.

If you're looking for Star Wars ideas, a great place to find some interesting things that could make for interesting builds is Star Wars: The Old Republic. Free game to play, lots of rather interesting bits that could work well for both wargaming and RPG stuff
-
SotF, looks like an interesting site. Crazy as it may sound, I'm not a gamer. I love the figures, painting, repurposing and creating layouts, but I just never caught the gaming bug.

A few months ago at Brookhurst Hobbies I was fortunate to come upon and purchase nine of the Monolith Designs’ Sci-Fi buildings: three of the single-story Sci-Fi Gothic Bunkers, three of the two-story Sci-Fi Gothic Bunkers and three of the Spaceport Domestic Buildings (one each of three different domestic building types). If you’ve tried to add Monolith Designs’ terrain to your collections in recent years, you know it is very hard to do. To the best of my knowledge I bought up all of the Sci-Fi buildings that Brookhurst had available, and I was very happy to get them.
I’ve attached pictures of two of the bunker-style buildings I have just completed painting. The only modification work I did on these was to hide what appears to have been a shell hit on one corner of the two-story building. I did that with Milliput and textured the Milliput patching with the brush-end of a toothbrush. I am painting these buildings in the same color scheme I used with my Middle Eastern buildings because I hope to include a few of those in my spaceport layout.

Awesome texture and color! ;)
-
I like the look of those, they're pretty close to what I plan to do for my desert world. Good job on them!
-
Dr Mathias, if you haven’t bought or made the buildings for your desert world yet, take a look at the buildings made by Kobblestone Miniatures. I used a lot of Kobblestone Miniatures’ buildings in my Pulp Egyptian collection. They are beautiful structures. I’ve attached a few pictures of the Kobblestone buildings I painted for that collection below.

-
Dr Mathias, I should note that the Middle Eastern buildings I will be using with my spaceport from my Egypt collection won't be Kobblestone simply because I want to keep the look of my spaceport buildings simple and the Kobblestone buildings are too handsome for that purpose.
-
Those look great :)

I finished the last of my 10 Monolith Designs’ Sci-Fi buildings… really happy that I found these. In this posting I am including the three Domestic Buildings and two more of the two-story Bunkers. While I have already included pictures of one of the first two-story Bunkers I did, I am including these two because one shows the shell hit on the building's corner (I left one of the buildings in its original form; no Milliput patching) and I included the second because I wanted to show the annex I am butting up to it. The small domed annex is a broken toy part I found at the swap meet a couple years ago and bought it because I hoped to find a purpose for it in my Space collection. It required some modification… mostly the addition of some Evergreen Plastic where things (unknown) were missing leaving unwanted openings in the piece. Rather than painting it in Natural Steel or Stone Grey (the color I used on many of my spacecraft) I decided to go with a color scheme close to the colors I’ve used on the Monolith buildings. I sprayed it flat back and then drybrushed it overall with a mix of Vallejo Copper and Flat Brown. When that was dry, I gave it a light highlighting with Vallejo Natural Steel. I have also included here a Monolith Designs’ Middle Eastern building (another Brookhurst Hobbies’ find) I will be including in my Space community. That building was painted a couple years ago when I did my Pulp Egyptian archeological dig collection.

AWESOME! Loved the textures and colors! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks dinohunterpoa. It's really a shame that Monolith Designs is not readily available. I am just very lucky that I live near Brookhurst Hobbies, and they still have some Monolith tucked away in dark places in their storerooms, and once in awhile a box or two of them turns up. To have located 10 of the Monolith Sci-Fi buildings just as I was starting this project was a real find. I'm now working on some Snapdragon structures for my spaceport that I lucked upon at Brookhurst... once again a great terrain line that is no longer available.
-
Looking forward to see the Cantina! ;)

Me too!

One of the first things that caught my attention when I began collecting items for this collection was the AT-43 medical unit. I loved the double-wide shipping container hospital and the sexy nurses. I was fortunate to find a second shipping container hospital sold separately. In addition to the AT-43 pieces I have included two medical droids from Wizards of the Coast. Finding Wizards of the Coast’s Star Wars collection has been a wonderful benefit to this collection both in terms of the great variety of figures available and because I have been able to pick most of them up at very reasonable, often very cheap prices.

Me too!
lol lol lol lol lol
Those nurses are great! :-*
So it seems that we're going to see some kind of medical bay, very nice idea! ;)
-
The spaceport will have a small military base and the med unit will be part of that... at least that is the plan.
-
First, I believe you should start a small account where forum members can send you money to buy them random cool stuff at the swap meet. I hit every yard sale, flea market, peddler's mall, and thrift store, and never can I find a haul as good as you!
Second, you do realize those AT43 medical containers are eBay gold, right? Last time I saw one of those actually sell, it could have brought you enough to finance the rest of your purchases for the collection.
As always, enjoying the build.
-
Dave, my swap meet is a treasure. Most of the community college weekend swap meets have become outdoor dollar stores rather than places where people sell discarded junk which is to say treasure. I hope the character of my swap meet never changes... each weekend is an adventure with a pot of gold in the form of broken or discarded toys always possible. I didn't realize that the AT-43 medical containers had become so valuable. I love the ones I have and realized when I found them years ago that they were special items. Thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to write. Richard

I’ve been painting a variety of pieces this week. Two of the items purchased at the swap meet several years ago for a dollar or two were initially intended to be taken apart and used as scrap parts placed around a repair unit or scrap yard. But as I’ve been painting more and more bikes, I got the urge to see if I could use the racers as vehicles instead of parts. They offered several problems. The smaller one lacked any significant hard point to use as a support post to lift it off the ground. The large one is heavy, very difficult to take apart, and was a problem if I was going to remove the wheels and lift it on a post. In the end I decided to leave the wheels on both and use them for the support… not perfect, but I think it worked out okay. They are also much smaller than 28mm and so the figures that came in them had to be removed and replaced with Wizards of the Coast Star Wars figures that could be made to look like they belong in these racers (sorry about not knowing the technical names). In the end I think they came out pretty good. The skiff was also a dollar or two find at the swap meet and except for reattaching the helmsman’s arm and rebasing, all I had to do with it was give it a new paint job. The Space Needle is a souvenir purchase during a 2015 visit to Seattle. It was originally a large dual purpose container/big cup and/or bank. It is about 16 inches tall. I filled the coin slot with putty, sanded off the words Seattle and Space Needle, attached a cap and pointy thing to the top to cover the straw hole, and gave it a new paint job.

Wow, given the raw materials, these are excellent!!
-
More Brilliant work!
The first podracer pod looks a bit small (maybe tack another chunk on the bottom?) but the other one is spot-on. The space needle is really cool. Technically it's probably a bit small, but it's so tall, that by the time you've looked all the way up, it looks perfect.
The skiff is really cool to. I've got a partly broken 3.75" action figure version that I might have to do up for 28mm.
-
Suber and eilif, thanks to both of you for writing. Glad you enjoyed the pieces. eilif, you are right about both the needle and the pod. In terms of adding a chunk to the bottom of the smaller pod, if the right chunk comes along I'm may just give it a try, but my goal with these things is to fill the streets with activity and with about 30 vehicles plus creatures moving up and down the spaceports streets I think the pod will probably give me what I need from it as it is, but I'll keep my eyes open for an appropriate chunk... the swap meet is good for things like that. Richard
-
Good point.
If the pod is street filler, I'd just put it in there and leave it be.
I'm gearing up for a similar addition to my sci-fi city. I want to add some every-day street detail so I've been grabbing various resale shop toy cars that have a sci-fi/futuristic look and are aproximately 28mm. It's proved more difficult than I thought to find good civilian vehicles, but I've got about 10 so far. When I get near 20 I'll paint them all in one frenzy and populate them around my city layout.
I don't think I'll ever get around to painting alot of civilians themselves, but it's not unreasonable to think that they've all gone into hiding when the battlemechs show up!

Essential to the look I want for my spaceport community is a varied population, ranges in technology, and racial and cultural differences in the population. A key element of that community will be an open air market with lots of market stalls trafficking in food, weapons, droids, etc. At my local swap meet several years ago I came upon what I now know to be an Action Fleet Star Wars’ market place. Over the years I have picked up several of these playsets at the swap meet (all broken) for a dollar or two each. The great thing about the ones I’ve bought is they all had their little market stalls. The pictures I am providing here of the playset in its original state are ones I took off eBay, not pictures of the ones I purchased at the swap meet. The ones on eBay appear to be complete and are expensive. For the last couple days I have been taking the playsets apart and putting together my own market stalls using pieces from the Action Fleet sets. Since the Action Fleet market stalls tend to be a little low for 28mm figures, I have been setting them on new bases made from Legos covered with JTT plastic. Four of the stalls sets I have finished thus far are food oriented. Two of the stalls are for weapons sales. Those last two are composed of Lego bases, an Action Fleet stall hood, Reaper future weapons, a Heroclix flying wing, and an awning covered stall that I picked up as a broken toy at the swap meet some time in the past. I still have a few more stalls to complete. Those will probably be droid and technology related. I’m having fun!

Those are neat, I wasn't aware of that set.
-
Great stuff! :-* I think you're achieving what I'm struggling to do with my Megacity One project! A busy board!
-
Those market stalls look fantastic! What a great find.
-
Excellent work, they look great. I'm glad you didn't give up on them because of the smaller scale.
At my local swap meet several years ago I came upon what I now know to be an Action Fleet Star Wars’ market place. The great thing about the ones I’ve bought is they all had their little market stalls.
I think everyone here is jealous of your swap-meet. I do really well at Goodwill and my other local resale shops, but the fact that you seem to find everything you could ever need for toybashing at one location is simply amazing!
-
Thanks to all for writing. I've committed to staying with these postings until the project is ready for the collection to be photographed as one of my galleries, but it is nice to hear from you along the way. I've been certain that a market place had to be a key part of this project, but the Action Fleet pieces have really been a great help in allowing me to give the market stalls a different look from others I have done for other projects. I've never found a complete Action Fleet market place, but what I have found has served me well and at great prices.
Andym, I have been a fan of your work for some time, and I have absolutely no doubt that you will win the struggle and that your "busy board" will be one we all envy.
Thanks again to all, and elif, I went to the swap meet again this weekend (as always) and found a couple of unique small droids that I will be bringing to the collection. I know how lucky I am to have the swap meet I do... for more than 15 years it has given me wonderful toys that I can repurpose for my hobby.

When I began putting this collection together about a decade ago, I thought the spaceport should include a salvage yard. Back in those early days JR Miniatures sold a couple of shacks that looked good for that purpose so I got those (now appear to be oop). At Brookhurst Hobbies I found a really nice scrap pile. I think it had been around awhile and was being sold as a sale item. I also found another scrap pile on the bargain table at my local model train store; again no idea who the manufacturer is. None of these were difficult to paint. The two figures pictured are Astropolis… really neat figures.

-
Great pieces, and the colours are really nice!
-
Thanks for the kind words. I took this opportunity to add a little punch to the color scheme without leaving the basic look behind.
-
The plan is that the spaceport will have a small military base. The base will be made up of troops from AT-43 that have been very, very slightly modified and repainted. There are a lot of high-ranking officers around simply because there are a number of really good-looking high-ranking officers from Astropolis and 40K. So I guess there is some kind of major military meeting somewhere out there in the Black and these guys are passing through this “frontier” spaceport… anyway, that’s my story, and I'm sticking with it.

Very nice! :-*
-
The At-43 are great figures, armored and spacey, but more "normal" than Space Marines. I was lucky to get them when I did... years back.
-
I must admit I don't like the AT43 figures (mainly because of the proportions), I think there are much better ones out there, but if you like them that's what counts. Nice painting as always!
-
Love the Astropolis officers. Reminds me that I must pick some of those figures up at some point!
-
Thanks to both of you for taking the time to write and the kind words.
blacksoilbill, the Astropolis figures are excellent.

A spaceport on the rim of the Verse seemed to be in need of some defensive structures. A little over a year ago I found one of the Games Workshop Imperial Bastion models at the Brookhurst Hobbies’ Bring and Buy (#23). It was already made and cost me $10. A couple months ago I came upon a second one on Amazon for $30 with free shipping. This one was new and still in the box (#24). I removed all the Games Workshop skulls but left the wings and gave both models the same paint job. I had a decal number sheets on hand so I gave the bastions the numbers 23 and 24.
I’ve also attached a picture of an Epicast Skimmer. A few months ago one of my local game stores did a major shop cleaning that turned up some items that had been tucked away for years and years. Among those newly discovered oldies were several pieces by Epicast. Because these items were more than a decade old, they were put on sale for 50% off so I picked up several of them. Among those was a resin skimmer. It came in three pieces: the hull, the base and the weapon. For my purposes I elected to reverse the placement of the weapon to make it part of the propulsion system. Pretty happy with the way it came out.

About five or six years ago I got lucky and came upon a Star Wars rebel troop transport at the swap meet. It was originally marketed as a Star Wars toy storage and carry container. I haven’t taken an actual measurement of the piece, but based on the Eagle 1 I posted earlier in this thread I’d say it’s about 28 inches long. I believe it is the most expensive swap meet toy I have ever bought, and cost me $30. It was in excellent condition, and it is the only one I have ever seen at the swap meet in the fifteen or so years I have been making my weekly trips. I think it is a pretty expensive eBay item if found. I glued it together to make it more usable and then gave it a new paint job… that was it. The ramp was taken from a broken Millennium Falcon that I got at the swap meet an striped for parts… it’s removable.

That is a very nice find.
You have quite a collection there.
-
That is just amazing! Great looking model and a very effective paintjob.
Which kit is the Space 1999 ship next to it?
-
Im really enjoying this thread, im still catching up but really enjoying the narratives and what not.
Much like my own way of modelling and painting, everything has to have a story :)
-
Love that big Star Wars slug thing. About 35 years ago I was working at the Argos warehouse picking and packing all this toy stuff. I remember that the Transport wasn't such a fast moving popular item. It was probably quite expensive for not so much play value, that's how a parent would look at it. So that might explain why you don't see so many about.
-
Thanks to all for taking the time to write and for the kind words.
eilif, Overlord posted a picture of the Eagle 1 and the box it came in on page 2 of this thread. I got mine as a broken toy at the swap meet. It was missing a lot of parts and it was covered with dry mud, but fortunately that didn't stop me from buying it... the only one I have seen in at least a decade.
matthais-mouse, I'm hoping that this thread will offer a good picture of a lot of the items that are/were available for a Space-related projected.
vodkafan, I think you are right on target regarding why I have seen so few of these transports... only one I've seen over many years at the swap meet and only a couple on eBay. I'm glad I got mine... $30 is by far the most I have ever paid for a toy found at my swap meet.
-
During a shop housekeeping at one of my local game shops, the shop crew came upon a number of very old and long forgotten Epicast Sci-Fi structures. Because they were long out of production, the pieces were placed on the bargain table at 50%. Lucky for me I found them before anyone else, and I am posting them here as part of my spaceport collection.

This is getting better and BETTER! :-*
-
Really great stuff! Great paint job. I am eager to see your postings.
-
Great new structures. I really like the Epicast range, but struggle to source it in the UK. Your painted examples really are nice.
-
Thanks to all three for taking the time to write. I'm really happy you enjoyed the posts.
axiom, this project has been a real process of discovery. So much of what is now central to what this collection will be I did not even know existed six months ago. That is certainly the case with the Epicast. They made some very nice items based on the few I have found, but like so many little companies associated with this hobby they seem to have disappeared... what a shame.
-
Because this project is focused on a spaceport, shipping containers are an important terrain element. I’ve completed the painting of the medium and small shipping contains. The large shipping containers and barrels remain to be done. The medium size shipping containers are from Reaper and some are HO scale containers I picked up on the bargain table at my local model train store. The smaller shipping containers are by Horizon Creation 3D. Because so much of my town is done in earth and metal colors, I decided to do most of the shipping containers in bright colors. The large containers that are yet to be painted are by Reaper… I’ve included a picture of one in case you haven’t seen it.

Excellent stuff! We must be due a set up shot soon, are we not? ;)
-
The containers might be my favourite scenic items so far. I really like the colours you've used.
-
Love the crates. Great colors all around. Especially love those Reaper crates in the first shot. I have some of those but couldn't figure out a good use for them. It never occurred to me they could just be shipping crates.
-
They look great.
-
Excellent selection of crates, your battles at the port will not lack for cover!

Thanks to all for taking the time to write and for the kind words.
Andym, I originally thought I would be done working on this project and have it photographed and posted in early June, but it grew so much while I was working on it that it looks like mid to late July now.
axiom, in planning this the containers seemed to be the best opportunity to add some splashes of color, and I'm happy with the way they came out... always a surprise for me which is probably part of the fun of doing this stuff.
Michka, I'm very happy with the way the Reaper "weapons" cases came out. I think they make great looking cargo containers, but honestly as I said to axiom above, I never know for sure about these things until they are done.
eilif, I have a lot of the large Reaper shipping crates like the unpainted one pictures in this posting. The opening episode of Firefly used them as the background and I was hooked.

I was going to say that! lol
AWESOME project, keep going! ;)

dinohunterpoa, thank you. I slowed down a little this week because I got caught up with 300-piece Pegasus Chemical Plant. Gluing all those pipes together is like watching grass grow. I've taken a little break from the chemical world and have spent the last couple days working on some moisture vaporators based on the Action Fleet Mos Espa Market version. I hope to have them completed and posted later today or tomorrow.

Last weekend the swap meet offered up a really great find. Over the years I have been able to pick up several of the Star Wars Action Fleet Mos Espa Market sets. I usually get them for a couple dollars and use them for their market stalls and the building's side awning... all good stuff, but I have never found one that still had the Moisture Vaporator attached. If you look them up on eBay, those with the Moisture Vaporator attached get into some big money... $40 or more with shipping. On Saturday I found one at the swap meet complete with the Moisture Vaporator for $5. Knowing that I was unlikely to find another one anytime in the near future I decided to scratch-build a couple simple versions of it using Lego pieces, Evergreen Plastic, and a part or two from the market set. I think they came out pretty good. I've attached pictures of the Mos Espa Market box (taken from the internet), and a picture that shows the original Moisture Vaporator (center) and the two I scratch built (left and right. The third picture is the three finished/painted versions.

Great find and build, now you're ready for Tatooine a desert planet in a galaxy far far away somewhere! lol
-
Nice work! Very cleverly done.
-
Very nice! They do the job splendidly.

Thanks to all. I may try to put one more Moisture Vaporator together before getting back to the Pegasus Chemical Plant. Off the subject but kind of exciting for me: while at the swap meet today I came upon a large box set of SG-1 DVDs. What was remarkable about it was that on the outer box was a plastic Stargate that is perfect for 28mm. I ask the seller if he would sell the box lid to me for $10; his asking price for the set was $25. I told him that if I could remove the plastic stargate without damaging the box I'd return the box lid to him. He agreed. When I got the box lid home I was able to remove the plastic stargate with no damage to the box in just a couple minutes. I dropped the lid off to the seller on my way to Brookhurst Hobbies' Memorial Day sale. It's been a good day.

Here’s a picture of the Stargate mentioned above. It’s not part of this project, but since I talked about it earlier I thought I should provide a picture in case anyone is curious.

Moisture Vaporators using Legos... Brilliant. I've been trying to figure out how to get those shapes made for a couple years now, and you come up with such a simple, elegant solution. Thank you!
Oh, and I feel your pain when it comes to the Pegasus Chemical Plant. I have three boxes of those kits. Only cleaned the parts for one of them. It would be nice if they had directions on how to build the kit in the box. There's one good thing about those kits. Since the pipes are all cut in half, you can easily use them as raised detail on flat surfaces. Makes sprucing up flat boxes much easier.
-
Nice find on the Stargate, it looks good, though it could do with a ramp.
-
Thanks to both of you for writing.
Michka, glad you like the Moisture Vaporators... that make me feel good about the outcome. Legos and Duplos are great scratch-building materials. In this case despite the fact that I have seen many pictures of the original Action Fleet vaporators, having one of the real things right in front of me seemed to make designing my versions much easier.
Ultravanillasmuf, the picture you see of the Stargate was taken just after I cut it off the DVD box lid. For the picture I set it on a big metal washer for balance... lots of work to do on that baby, but I feel very lucky to have found it. I think it is a great piece with a lot of potential. It's like so many things found at the swap meet in that I find a nice piece at a great price or in this case a reasonable price and that leads me to come home and find ways to spend a lot of money so I can use it. I have a great Egyptian collection in terms of a temple and pyramids but those were done for my Pulp archeological dig. Now that I have the Stargate I've been looking at the figures from Dark Fable Miniatures... good looking minis.
-
I'm thinking about moving to your city just for the swap meets. All we have here is old china and beat up pokemon cards.
-
Great work on the Moisture evaporators and stargate!
I love the pegasus chemical plant stuff. I don't find it all that interesting on it's own, but it's absolute gold for bringing a bit of pipes and industrial looks to other kit/scratch/toy builds.
Keep it up!
-
Oldben1, having a great model train shop, Brookhurst Hobbies and the-swap-meet-from-Heaven all within a short drive makes me a very lucky boy.
eilif, your approach may turn out to be the way I have to go, but now that I have the pipe halves glued together I'm going to take a shot at designing a chem plant... all part of the fun or so I'm telling myself.

After finishing my third scratch-built Moisture Vaporator, I decided to turn my attention to a few more small terrain pieces from Horizon Creation 3D. I put together six of their sonic pylons, two large and four small relay points, and a power silo. The relays and power silo were actually thank-you gifts Horizon sent me when I made my container and pylon purchases… nice folks. The sonic pylons required some time to put together, but they all were easy to paint, and I think will add interest to my spaceport layout. Now that these are done, it’s back for another try at the Pegasus chem plant.

Not to say that they aren't great for a chem plant. I just think they're more effective when combined with larger tanks, pump stations, rather than on their own. Here's a couple I did.

Also, I admit that since they've become harder to get in the US I've become even more stingy with the Chem Plant pieces.

Excellent!

Just finished above-ground pipes and my Pegasus chemical unit. The large, resin overhead pipe unit by Armorcast is one that I purchased many years ago. It includes one more pipe section and support that I couldn’t fit in this picture. The large pipe half is made from a necklace hanger that my wife was throwing out. I attached a couple pieces from the Pegasus chemical plant on top of it to give it a little more interest value. The chemical unit is made from pieces from the Pegasus Chemical Plant. I’m actually pretty happy with the way it came out though it does reflect the fact that building the Pegasus chemical plant stretched my modeling talent. I still have to apply the ground cover, but that should be no problem. I’ll be taking on the Pegasus Power Plant next. Thankfully it has half the pieces (150 vs. 300) and comes with real directions.

Looking good. I have some of that Armorcast pipeworks stuff too. Now I have to find it. You'll be happy with the Power Plant kit. It's a much easier build, and it looks fantastic when it's done.

Thanks Michka. I got distracted on Wednesday and did some work on some Wizards of the Coast Star Wars troop carriers so I haven't started the Power Plant yet, but your words make be feel better about getting into it.

I'm with Michka. The power plant is really easy to assemble and has a very complete look once finished. Of course I couldn't resist modding and tweaking the one I rebuilt for my buddy.

eilif, that is great. I'll be using your pictures as a guide.
-
Thanks! Happy to help. I think I said as much in the linked topic, but I designed it to have enough nooks for skirmish games, but it has 3 separate areas that can offer cover to at least a 10 man squad.
-
I finished the Pegasus Power Plant today. This was certainly a much easier model to put together than the Chemical Plant… no comparison. The Power Plant not only comes with some usable directions (pictures), the pieces go together in such a fashion that it has enough structural strength that it does not fall apart as you add new pieces. The Chemical Plant was “designed” to allow the builder to do whatever the builder wanted in terms of the structure of the plant, but it was so delicate that as you tried to add new pieces, the previous work fell apart. Anyway, happy to have them both done, and I think they will be good additions to the spaceport. I should add that I borrowed the color scheme for my power plant from Michka's power plant.

Looking good. I love that kit. When I found another Power Plant kit hidden in the basement a couple weeks ago I squealed with joy. (This was something of a surprise to the wife, who had no idea why yet another box of miniatures stuff would be so wonderful.)
-
They are very good. I will have to look out for them.

I really like some of the things that GW produces, but each time I consider adding a piece of it to one of my collections I have to figure out how I am going to hide the skulls. When I saw the GW Reactor a year or so ago, I thought it would be a great addition to my spaceport, but I knew that hiding that huge skull wasn’t going to be easy. Fortunately, I had a lot of pieces left over from my construction of the Pegasus Chemical Plant and those pieces offered the solution to my big skull problem. I haven’t painted the reactor yet, but I thought I would post my hide-the-skull solution in its raw state in case someone else might be interested.

It looks far better without the silly skull dominating it. Good work! 8)
-
NOW that's a proper futuristic scenery! :D
As I've already said: it's getting better and better, CONGRATULATIONS!
Looking forward to see the dinosaurs cantina! ;D
-
Nice work on both. The power plant looks imposing and functional
The hiding of the big skull on the reactor is really well done. I guess as long as you cover the bottom right quarter, the top looks like a tank of some sort and the rest is just techy bits. Very cool
Honestly, I'm kind of surprised there's only a couple of skulls on that. Perhaps they were low on cranimums when they designed this one?
-

Yeah, would have been my point; I've never thought of using the Pegasus for anything BUT conversions, though your Power Plant IS the bomb.
Well, I'm all about intentions... *sigh*
Continued awesome work!
Doug

Thanks to all for taking the time to write and for the kind words. I think the Pegasus parts really did the job in covering the big skull. As to the small ones, I used a sanding stick and glued some Lego attaching posts (not really sure what they are called) that I cut off some Lego blocks to hide any small "skull" remains. I hope to have the reactor painted and posted today or tomorrow. Then on to more GW terrain pieces and more skull removal... only small skulls so not too big a problem.
-
They are very good. I will have to look out for them.
FYI - The Russian manufacturer that supplied Pegasus with the chemical plant and power plant went out of business, so Pegasus is only selling off remaining stock without hope of getting more. So if you can find any of the power plant kits out in the wild, scoop 'em up as there won't be any more.

Excellent work on that reactor! Any tips on how to paint it? I have 2 of those to paint lol
-
Looking great! :-*
Boy! You just don't stop! o_o
Keep up the awesome work. :)
-
Thanks to both of you for the kind words.
Painting this was really easy. I sprayed the whole thing flat black. Once it was dry I dry brushed it with Vallejo Natural Steel. The brass-like color is Vallejo Brass mixed with Vallejo Flat Earth (didn't want it to be too bright). The blue color is Vallejo Blue Green which I then highlighted with a mix of Blue Green and Off White both by Vallejo. The wheel is Vallejo Flat Red. It was a lot of fun to paint. For me the tough thing was to not overdo the Brass-Flat Earth color.

I think there are dribbles out of Russia by local players or shopkeeps. I think the original company was 'Technolog', or similar. Same folk as put out the Robogear and Z.O.D. things?
Also, some as part of the Urban War stuff, right?
Pops up in the weirdest places under the weirdest names.
I've bits and pieces of most things, but War In sure puts the bar high!
Doug
Edit: Just noticed a post in the Bazaar, there is a Chemical Plant as an Urban War Bio-Toxin Plant.
-
Nice paint job on the reactor.
I will have to add those colours to my paint box.

I think Imex was the supplier, Technolog did those weird modular vehicle kits from Russia. Pegasus and others still have stock of some of the kits but the power plant and platformer seems to have been the first one to run out. I was looking for one earlier this year. When I emailed Pegasus a couple of months back, they told me that the original producer was out of business. They didn't know if someone else had picked up the molds or not though so it's possible that they could pop back up again.

Excellent job on hiding the massive skull. Seeing the whole piece painted tempts me to get a reactor for my SWA terrain.

I presume it's Shadow War: Armageddon.
I ended up picking up a set of the reactors, I'm not totally against the over-the-top skulls but that cover up does look pretty good...

Thank you very much, mate! I will research it! ;)

Skulls obviously work for lots and lots of people. GW seems to know what they are doing when it comes to the success of their products. I'm just not a "skull guy." After working on the reactor and the Alchomite Stacks (I'll post soon), I will say that I am surprised that GW doesn't engineer their terrain (when possible) to offer a piece that would hide the skull(s) as I did. I say that because they do offer alternate pieces in the box that will allow you to change the look of the models in other ways. They would probably sell more to the non-skull lovers of the world. That said part of the fun that I have in working on the GW stuff is hiding the skulls.
-
Wow this thread was a hidden (to me anyway) gem!! :o :o :-* :-* I would love to see a full-table pic next time you throw your stuff on the table for a game, it's got to be quite the sight at this point! :) 8)

Looks fantastic.
Going to have get my downtown Mega City One project back into action.

Thank you for taking the time to view, write and for the generous words. This is my 19th collection (13 are 15/18mm and 6 are 28s) and the first one I have tracked the progress of on LAF or anywhere else. It's been a fun process. I still have more to complete before the collection is done: lots of odds and ends and two interiors (the cantina and a spacecraft). My hope is that it will be completed by late June or early July and the gallery will be posted before the end of July. Because so much of this collection has been brought together during the months I have been working on it rather than over many years preceding years as is normally the case, a lot of the details of what this spaceport on the rim of the verse will look like are still resolving themselves, but the one constant is my love of Eavesdown Docks from the first Firefly and my need to include lots of "races"/populations groups, cultures, and technologies in this one strange and wonderful place... looking forward to it myself.
-
After buying the GW reactor more than a year ago, I kept my eyes open for other GW terrain pieces that might enrich my spaceport. A couple months ago I discovered the GW Alchomite Stacks, and decided to add them to the collection. Like all GW terrain pieces the stacks had skulls, but these were small and easily removed. I painted them with much the same color scheme that I used with the reactor. I think they will add some interest value to the spaceport.

Do you have any links to this? I'd like to know more. It seemed like their stuff was harder to get after the post-crimean-invasion sanctions, and their website hasn't been updated in a long time but I hadn't heard that they were out of business.
If that's true, it's a real shame as I've had alot of fun with Tehnolog kits over the years. I do think the chem kit is the jewel in their crown for kitbashesrs and terrain makers, but The Gothic kits (some are owned by Pegasus right?) platformer, Brohnkorpus and Robogear stuff was quite nice too.

While my spacecraft repair units (aka GI Joe HQ playsets) have attached cranes, the discovery of the really big/huge Thomas Train Cranky cranes at the swap-meet-price of $5 each led me to decide that each repair unit should have one of these big babies associated with it. In both cases these cranes had sustained some damage due to hard play by their previous owner; thus the $5 price tag… these things are normally very expensive. Those repairs were relatively easy to make using plastic, putty and Legos. I removed the Thomas Train face and replaced it with what I hope passes for a front-facing window… again using Evergreen Plastic. To indicate the size of these cranes I have set a Heroclix figure (28mm) on the platform of one of the cranes. I have used this figure for scale purposes with much of what I have posted on this thread.

OMG! That swap-meet of your is just AMAZING! :o
Great job on the cranes! ;)
-
I want to hang out at your swap meet, man. All we have here in Portland is over-priced hipster swarmed Goodwills, and an entire generation that doesn't understand the concept of a garage/yard sale (they seem to think 75% of retail is marking it to sell).
-
Dang, those Crankys are amazing.
Do you know what system they are from? I've got a couple cranky's from what I think was the die-cast thomas system and they are nice, but not nearly that nice.
-
Looks like Thomas Trackmaster Cranky and Flynn Save The Day

Slightly off-topic, but when I was in Portland I did notice that the Goodwill stores were oddly expensive. Here in Chicagoland Goodwill is really cheap, but we also have a fair bit of resale competition. Goodwills I've visited in the country have generally been a bit more expensive, but nothign like the prices in Portland.

Great terrain, Those cranes are insane.. How large are they ? :O
But This one is best..
this guy is clearly saying:
"This is my Ferratonic furnace Mr Bond"
or
"Son, all this will be yours one day.."
-
AWu, the cranes are 18 inches tall from the ground to the top of the control box and 29 inches tall from the ground to the top of the arm. As to what any of my figures might be thinking that is beyond my talents to assess.

Really.
They keep their voices so low, I can't make out what they're saying. And I hear them ALL night...
Oh, I'm sorry. This ISN'T the Gothic board. ;)

My wife and I are annual passholders at Disneyland and visit the Magic Kingdom regularly (about a 30-minute drive from our home). A few years ago I was in the Emporium on Main Street and to my surprise I found that Disney had released a new, unusual park-related toy. That toy was the parking lot tram and to my pleasure it is very 28mm compatible. Because we are passholders we get a 20% discount on our purchases and meals. Over time I have purchased several of the trams and two of them will be used as my spaceport transit and hauling vehicles. The two flatbed trailers shown here are John Deer trailers that I picked up at the swap meet for $1 each.

OMG, this is PERFECT!!! :-*
The "toy safari" is always one of the most pleasurable parts of the hobby, IMHO! lol
-
Brilliant!
Really brings to mind the people movers in the Rebel bases in Star Wars. Excellent choice and I love the paint scheme.
I've got one of the older Star Tours spaceships (the smaller 28mm'ish one, not the action figure size). It's missing the roof and I'll probably end up removing the top of R2-D2, but it'll be a focal point of my spaceport.
-
That is a cracking find, finished off superbly.
:-* :-*
Now I must resist the urge to go looking for one or two....
::)
-
Thanks all three for taking the time to write. I'm glad the three of you like the tram. I love it but I wasn't sure how others would see it. Every once in awhile Disney will put out a toy sold only at the parks or in their stores that are really great for repurposing, and I think this is one of those. I did a little tongue-in-check thing in my Gangster gallery where I treated a street shooting as though it was being filmed for a movie and followed that using one of these trams as a studio tour bus... great little toy.
dinohunterpa, I have always loved the hunt which is why I am at my local swap meet every weekend.
Mason, if you decide to search for a tram or two I wish you luck. For all I know Disney may sell it at their on-line store.
-
Very clever! I really like the paint scheme too.

The roots of this collection are in the opening episode of Firefly when Serenity lands at Eavesdown Docks. I loved the look of the place… its frontier quality and its many cultures and technologies. During that episode the crew walked to and from their ship through a wonderful marketplace and past a backdrop of stacked shipping containers. That shipping container background seemed brilliant to me, and I decided that if I was able to put together my own frontier spaceport I wanted to include a backdrop of shipping containers. Initially I thought that I would have to build my own shipping containers out of Duplos and Evergreen plastic but a couple years ago Reaper came out with the shipping containers I needed, and I made a deal with a local store for a big discount if I bought a bunch of them, and here they are. As with my smaller shipping containers and barrels I decided to go with a lot of different bright colors because the spaceport town is largely earth tones and metal colors.

A big thanks for finding the Disneyland tram. I like the retro look and it's perfect scale, it may find a place in my project as well. The Disney store online does sell it but at a big price for us Canadians. Always impressed by your build up, each piece is a treat to see.
Have you thought of what your future project may be? I hope you stay with sci-if as this is where my present interest lies and I would enjoy the ongoing inspiration.
-
Aquamarine, this project is drawing to a close in terms of the production phase. I expect that I will continue to post things on this thread through June, but a couple of the key elements (the spaceship interior and the cantina interior) I will probably not post on this thread but will hold them for the posting of the finished, staged gallery which I plan to have photographed and posted on my website and here in July. As to my next project, it will be another 28mm collection. As of this moment I plan to begin a Post Apoc collection in July. That project was inspired by the Atomic Café work of members of LAF. It will center on a desert community in the Nevada desert in the 1950s/loosely.
-
Holey Smokes!
How many containers did you buy?
-
So many nice containers that I can't find the one with the "Dont Open Dead Inside" grafiti! :o
-
Sometimes I just get carried away, but I think they are going to look great behind the spacecraft lining my spaceport... we'll see.
-
They need labels, logos, code numbers, signs of wear.
But brilliant all the same
-
jamesmanto, I don't disagree at all. My initial plan was that the light grey containers would all have the Blue Sun logo attached (a homemade decal). The problem I am confronting attaching decals to the large Reaper containers is that the ribbing on the sides of the containers is very narrow, very numerous and very close together... tough to put an effective decal on that. Nonetheless, I will give that plan a try. If it doesn't work, I'll just live with them the way they are.

Instead of a decal, what about a quick spray over a mould/stencil of the Black Sun logo?
-
Not sure I'm that creative. My fallback position is probably going to be self-standing signs that have the Blue Sun logo... I really want to include that in some way.

Stencil spray logos are used nowadays in actual shipping containers; in a sci-fi setting, I think it would give a very nice "retro look" feel! ;)

I don't question what you are saying, but the combination of the rough surface on these containers and my limited talents plus the fact that the Blue Sun logo is complex makes your suggestion unlikely in my case, but as I indicated I will give my decal idea a try, but doubt it will work because of the container surface issue.
-
Mate, you don't have any kind of "limited talents" whatsoever! ;)
-
I use the Ainsty containers (I bought a pack of three at each show to spread the cost), so I do not know how the ribs compare. On one I have added some OO (4mm to the foot 1/76 scale) graffiti.
I gloss varnished the target area and used plenty of Humbrol Decalfix. The decals bedded in okay.
One source of decals are model railway suppliers. 40 foot HO (3.5mm to the foot 1/87 scale) look the right size for the Ainsty ones (they are smaller than 1/56).
-
I really like the GW Sector Mechanicus Galvanic Servohaulers, but I decided to go with the cheap swap meet version for $1… repainted cast-off toy.

Another PRICELESS find, WELL DONE!!! :-*
-
Excellent, are you going to add the cables?
-
I have posted some photographs of (graffiti) decals on an Ainsty container on my blog.
http://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/ainsty-containers-part-one.html (http://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/ainsty-containers-part-one.html)
The ribs appear wider than on your containers.
-
More excellent work.
I agree though that it needs some cables. Guitar strings would probably look great. If you don't have any, your local music store can probably give you old strings for free.
-
If I'm counting right, you have 31 Reaper containers. Adding decals or spraying them all would be a project all on it's own. Doctor Faust's Painting Clinic did a YouTube video about painting those containers. He had some real problems getting his mask to stick down with the ribbing too.
(I hope this link works...) https://youtu.be/dU3iPde5fpg
The servo-hauler crane looks great. And it doesn't have all the skulls on it. (I have to admit I'm getting used to the skulls, but I wouldn't miss them if they disappeared.) Did you disassemble that thing and spray it in parts, or did you paint it all put together?
-
While I won't be adding graffiti to the large shipping containers... the Alliance wouldn't permit that, I am going to take a shot at putting the Blue Sun logo on the light grey containers.
Michka, you counted right. There are 31 large shipping containers.
I did not take the servo hauler crane apart before painting. I sprayed it flat black and then began dry brushing. Once the dry brushing was done I cleaned up any over brushing that had taken place and it was done. The GW servo haulers are beautiful but this one will serve.
-
I love all your recent additions! :-*
I've tried myself the Blue Sun a couple of times and it's tricky indeed
(http://i59.tinypic.com/14x0z11.jpg)
You may want to use a pencil first so you know what to paint later, at least for the big letters ;D
-
Very nice additions!
I applied decals to some ribbed containers, the results weren't that good even using various micro-set and micro-sol chemicals. Not sure I would go that route again.
-
Suber and Dr Mathias, thanks for writing and the kind words. As Dr Mathias said, I think the ribbing is too extreme on the Reaper containers. I may give it a try, but will probably just use the Blue Sun logo on some signs instead... really want to get that logo in the spaceport somehow.
-

Hey that's a point....is your spaceport owned and run by a commercial company or does it belong to a planetary government or some such?
Either way I think your Blue Sun logo is an excellent idea for tying everything together. I have enjoyed watching this thread and your new way of displaying your stuff treasures as you go...
-
vodkafan, stuff is good. My take on Blue Sun is that it is the true force behind everything everywhere... so of the space very of "beware of the military-industrial complex." Blue Sun is the power.
-
An alternative would be to put them on plates, either lengthways or vertically.

Blue Sun is the power.
I swear I've read "Black Sun" (the SW crime syndicate) every time! (and I've even sent you a Black Sun logo, I'm sorry! :o)

Ultravanillasmurf, I'll fit it in some way.
dinohunterpoa, not to worry. I do that kind of thing all the time.

While this thread is far from a complete presentation of my spaceport collection, it does provide a pretty good feel for the kinds of things that will be found in the gallery once it is done. I’m thinking that this may be my last picture post on this thread. I plan/hope to have the diorama-style gallery photographed and posted before the end of July… we’ll see. This posting is of the scratch-built fencing that will surround my spaceport military base. At present I have completed about 8 feet of fencing plus an entrance gate. The fence mesh is made from nylon (?) door and window screen I purchased at Home Depot. I got all I will ever need for this project and many more for about $6. The fence posts are Evergreen plastic rod (#213) and the base is yellow green Milliput. The fence height is 2 inches and the length of each section is 4 ½ inches. I attached the mesh to the rod with Plastruct plastic weld, sprayed the finished section with flat black and then dry brushed the surface with Vallejo Dark Seagreen which is actually a grey color. I finished them off by spraying them with Testors Dullcote and then added ground cover. This process turned out to be a lot easier than I thought it would be. For the next couple weeks I will be working on the interior of a spacecraft, the interior of my cantina and a lot of signs. When all is done I’ll put pictures of my diorama-style layout on my website and post some sample pictures and a link to the diorama-style gallery here on LAF. I’ve never tried posting so many elements of a project during the production phase before. It has been an interesting experience. It certainly got a lot of viewings and to those who took the time to write, thank you for the interest you have shown and all the kind words. They were much appreciated. I hope I have shared some ideas that others will be able to use. LAF has always served as a treasure house of ideas for me.
Beam me up, Scotty.

-
That fencing is very nice.
-
Ah yes, I have fences in a similar style. It's a bit late to mention it now, but I've found that having the chainlink going diagonally rather than orthogonal makes it look a lot more realistic.
-
YPU, this is on the rim of the Verse long in the future... things change. Actually I thought about doing that but given the fact that the openings are not square to start with, and this is taking place in the distant future far out in space it seemed to me that I would be buying into a lot more work in terms of cutting and measuring for an imperfect outcome that wasn't required anyway; after all none of this stuff is all that real which is a big part of what makes it fun.
-
Chain link fence tends to have diamond mesh, welded tends to be square.
Have a look at these links:

-
Ultravanillasmurf, when I put my collections together, if they are not historical in nature, my aim is to have fun and do things that I think look good. That said I was well aware when I constructed these fences that they were not traditional chain link fences which is why I used the word "mesh" rather than "chain link" in my original description. Frankly I'm pretty happy with the "mesh" look for my spaceport military base... didn't want to look too 20th or 21st century Earth. Thanks for sending the links for the wire mesh and chain link fences. Richard
-
I think they are good as well.
Mesh is certainly more futuristic (and what I assumed you were working towards rather than chain).
-
Lots of great looking stuff, and ideas.
I'm working on a 15mm Spaceport, and am in the process of collecting/making stuff for it, so your postings are excellent inspiration for that.
I love the variety of figures you've collected, as well as many of the other items too, e.g. pipelines, Spaceport Tower, fencing, etc., etc.. The latter is really a "no-brainer", but still one I managed to overlook when pulling stuff together, so I need to rectify that.
Would love to see some more pics, once you assemble everything together, for display.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Mako, thanks for taking the time to write and for the kind words. This thread which has been going on for 6 months only represents the kind of things that will be found in the collection I am working on... lots of stuff hasn't been posted here. I know that you have seen my diorama-style galleries for other collections I have done, and that is what I am planning for this one. I think I have painted about 500 figures (give or take a couple) for this collection. Anyway it will soon be done and the actual laying out and photographing of the tables will take place. The gallery will probably be big and hopefully it will bring the collection together in a really interesting display... always the hope.
I would love to see what you have been doing with 15s so I will checking what is currently posted (this project has taken me away from my normal interest in 15s) and keep my eyes open for future postings on this subject in 15s by you.
Thanks again. Richard

THIS IS A CALL FOR HELP: It appears that all of the pictures I have posted on LAF using Photobucket have been dropped. According to the postings that have replaced my pictures I am supposed to update my Photobucket account to address 3rd Party Hosting. I know nothing about 3rd Party Hosting and when I went to my Photobucket account, it indicates that my Photobucket account is fine. It looks like this has happened to other member accounts as well. Frankly, based on the LAF's bar of options for dealing with problems I can find nothing that directs me to someone who can help me with this. If any member can tell me what is going on here and how to fix it, I would appreciate the information. I have been an active member on LAF for several years now. I believe I have always behaved in a positive fashion, and I have good reason to believe that my postings have been received very well by the members and guest viewers. For example, this thread has more than 20,000 viewings and my African Adventure post has more than 30,000 viewing. I would like to continue as a member, but if I can't post my work my membership has been significantly impacted to the negative. Thank you in advance for your help. Richard
-
The problem is on Photobucket's side. They now want the members to pay for a service - 3rd party hosting - that was free. I'm deleting my account on their site as soon as I arrive at home. I refuse to pay (399$)for something that was free just so I can share photos. I'll just use Imgur instead.
-
Richard: Firstly, 'Dont Panic!'
You have done nothing wrong.
It is nothing to do with the LAF.
(We all love your input into this place, have no fear... :))
Photobucket has done this to everyone's account by the looks of things, mine included. We are all having our accounts held to 'ransom' as they have changed their policy and are not allowing 'third party' use without paying them a fee to do so.
There is a significant percentage of people here affected by this as a lot of us use Photobucket.
Check out this thread for some of our responses to this happening:

Mason, thanks for the insights, calming words and the direction to the ransom thread. I guess I'll be looking for another means of third party sharing... one that is far more reasonable than Photobucket. When I began posting here I didn't attach sample photos to my large galleries. I just provided the link to the gallery along with my website. Unfortunately that does not provide an effective opportunity to share quick and simple postings and write-ups plus links to galleries do not attract the attention/viewers that a few sample pictures do. Your help with this is much appreciate! Richard
-
When Photobucket killed all of my pictures on this thread, my initial feeling was one of frustration and disappointment because I had seen this thread as my effort to identify and share through words and pictures many of the things that over the years I have found that I will be incorporating in my spaceport collection and gallery. This thread has been my only serious effort to document the progress of a collection and share it with interested viewers on LAF. In the past my collections have been posted here as fully developed diorama-style layouts. With the posting of my military base fencing for this collection I had decided to end this thread, but with the pictures blanked out by Photobucket, I decided to add at least one more posting on a part of this project that is currently under development. Thumbing my nose at Photobucket… a rather silly act of “who cares” on my part. Since I have not decided on a new source for 3rd party picture distribution… a concept I was not aware of until last week, this posting is of my spacecraft interior and will be in the form of a word picture. The last few 28mm galleries I have done (Victorians, Pulp Egypt, and Gangsters) have all included interiors that were constructed as movie sets with 2 walls and a floor made of JTT and Evergreen plastic all of which could be taken apart for easy storage. The spacecraft interior will encompass an area 16 inches by 24 inches. It will be different from previous interiors in that while much of the connecting floor throughout the spacecraft will be JTT Plastic (97450/Diamond Plate/O scale) and some of the walls will be Evergreen Plastic (4529/Metal Siding) most of the interior will be dominated by three Sci-Fi rooms (two medium and one large) by JR Miniatures. These preformed rooms will be supplemented with Sci-Fi wall sections also by JR with the additional help of the Evergreen metal siding mentioned above. Unfortunately the rooms are no longer available, but the wall sections are. The two medium rooms will serve as the command center/bridge and the med lab. The large room I have divided into two sections.. One side serves as the sleeping quarters and the other as the engine room. The dividing wall is made from JR Sci Fi wall sections. I have created a long hallway using the JR wall sections and the Evergreen metal siding. The reason for the use of the Evergreen metal siding is that there are a variety of different JR wall sections, and they are not uniform in height or width so the Evergreen serves to tie the sections together and address the need for uniform wall height and width. The Evergreen metal siding works out well because it matches the interior walls of the three JR rooms. The open area between the command center/bridge (a medium room) and the sleeping quarters (part of the large room) will be used as the mess hall and gains some separation from the larger open area of the ship through the use of a JR wall section. I have just ordered the Cyber Bar from Scotia Grendel and I plan on modifying parts of it for use in the mess hall. There is also a large open area that will serve as the cargo bay. The command center/bridge is furnished with pieces by Scotia Grendel: a commander’s seat and two information desks. The med lab and sleeping quarters are furnished with pieces by Spartan Scenics. The engine is by JR. Bringing all this together with the sectional floor I plan to make using the JTTPlastic Diamond Plate is going to take a lot of work, but I think it will proved an excellent addition to the collection.

Mate, don't give up! That Photobucketofshit was a bad thing, but such things happen all the time, specially in the www! Just keep amazing us with that AWESOME work of yours! ;)
-
dinohunterpoa, I'm not giving up. Just taking a breath while I figure out the direction I will take with 3rd party hosting photo posting... not even part of my vocabulary before last week. The projects will continue and the diorama style galleries will always be posted on my war in 15mm website. As always, thanks for writing; appreciate the kind words. Richard

Sorry to hear about your Photobucket woes. I've been uploading most of my stuff to our club's website recently, but I haven't had the heart to go and look at any of the hundreds of internet postings I've made with Photobucket pics over the years.
Sounds like you have got some great stuff planned for the future and rest assured that we all are looking forward to seeing them. I'm sure they will be great.
Now for the critical part. Don't take this the wrong way, but maybe now is a good time to invest in the use of paragraph separations? That's one mighty big wall-o-text up there.
-
eilif, fortunately the real heart of my work over the last eight-plus years is located on my website and has nothing to do with Photobucket. What was hit by Photobucket are the odds and ends I have posted over the years on LAF and the sample photos I used when I was introducing my galleries to LAF viewers in the hope that I could get them to click on the links to my full galleries.
Point about paragraph density well made and accepted. Thanks
Richard

Glad to hear it. It'd be a shame if the work we've been so enjoying following disappeared.
Now then, get back to building you've got a repuation to keep up!
;)

I hope to see more of your excellent work here.

Thanks to both of you for writing. The work (actually play) on this project continues. I plan to have the interior of the spaceship done this week, and will be starting on the interior of the cantina next week. Once they are done all that is left is designing some signs and making some decals. Really hope to have the dry run of the layout of the spaceport town done by the third week of July. Once I have worked out the spaceport town's layout all that remains is finding a time when my daughter can do the photography. Looking forward to seeing it all come together... years of collecting and about 10 months working on the project (painting, repurposing and building). This one has taken about four more months to produce than I had planned. I'm not usually that far off with my projections, but lots of new stuff was found during the project which extended the time by months, but I think those finds have made this a much more interesting collection.

I look forward to seeing it.

With all my pictures blanked out by Photobucket, I am doing a test run of Flickr to see if this option for posting pictures will work. To do this I have come back to my "Space, My New 28mm Frontier" to post the last figure I did in that collection... There is a cheat for Photobucket. Have you tried adding the text “~original” to your links they can all be viewed again. If you copy and paste that into all your pics mate, that sorts them right out.
Here I’ve tried it by quoting one of your earlier posts and adding it...
Beam me up, Scotty.

Just insert ~original after .jpg at the end . So ....1so3.jpg[/img] becomes ....1so3.jpg~original[/img]

Andym, thanks so much for the help. When I did this set of posting I was hoping to leave a trail that would provide a more detailed description of where the pieces of my diorama-style Spaceport Gallery came from. For years I have benefited from threads such as this that others have posted. When Photobucket blocked the pictures I was really disappoint that my "trail" had been washed away. I plan to use your direction to reopen the photos. I just finished page one of the thread and will do a page or two each day until it is done. I will be opening a new post of my completed 28mm Spaceport (113 pictures) today or tomorrow... it would be nice to get this back in place just in case people who see the finished diorama-style gallery might be interested in seeing the pieces. Once again, thank you for this help. Richard

I'm glad you've recovered from the Photobucketofshit crash and this AWESOME project of yours is in full action again! Looking forward to see the pictures! ;)

I have recovered most of the pictures on this thread, and have brought the thread to a conclusion with two pictures of the finished project.

Awesome! :o The way Mos Eisely should be!

Thanks Andym for both the generous comment and your guidance in restoring the pictures throughout the thread.

Beautiful. That place is just dripping with Scum and Villany!

That looks great.

Not going to lie ... seeing this back up makes me happy. Amazing work.
Know you've said before you do this largely for the modeling aspect and don't play, but wondered about that ... what do you do with all of this once you've finished? Can't imagine my wife letting me keep all these diorama type scenes sitting around for years and years :)
-
Thanks so much for the kind words... means a lot.
dwbullock, believe me my wife would not smile on the idea of having these collections on display throughout our home. When I retired a decade ago my wife pointed out that I would have much more time to work on these collections and since doing this makes me happy she was happy with that, but her question at that time goes directly to your point. That question was, "what are you going to do with them?" To that question, she offered an answer: photograph them in diorama form and create a website where they can be displayed without having them spill all over the house. In that way I could share them and enjoy seeing them whenever I wanted to see them without the hours of set up and take down. That sounded good to me. Nearly a decade later I have completed 19 galleries... thirteen 15mm and six 28mm. All of these are created so that once they have been photographed they can be neatly stored. We have a large garage with cabinets lining the walls (cabinets full of my miniatures/buildings, figures, rivers, trees...) while still allowing us to keep the cars in the garage. I also have a very nice shed dedicated to storing my collections. So far it has worked out well. I'm currently working on gallery number 20, and like most the members of LAF I have many, many unpainted figures in boxes awaiting their day as a gallery.

Excellent work, looks really good.
You mention a website with lots of pictures, do you have a link?
These setups would be great to game on, but if the collecting and building is your thing, then please keep sharing!

The complete spaceport gallery is 113 pictures. If you go to my website, the gallery page identifies each of the 19 galleries with an identifying picture, a title and the number of pictures in each gallery. Since the Space Gallery is the most recent of the galleries, it will be found at the bottom of the gallery page... just scroll down and click on the identifying picture. At that point you will be in the gallery and can scroll down though the gallery's 113 pictures. I hope you give a few of the other galleries a look as well. You can find my website at www.warin15mm.com
