Maybe just pour it on then? :D

Now there's an idea. Just set up a barrier round the edge.

You'd want to make sure the surface was ABSOLUTELY LEVEL first though!

i would most certinly NOT pour varnish on, as you are almost guaranteed to get a cloudy appearance if it even dried in the first place. perhaps a picture of the table, and a close up of the grit would give us a better understanding of what you are up against. because if its just sand you used, i dont see a problem, but if you put large basing grit in there, i can see many issues with this..

Why not just paste on some textured wallpaper?

That way the paper should take the sharp edges down and give you the base of a good table by just drybrushing?

Also a little bit of filler / latex spackle sould cover the entire textured surface, still give you a nice uneven texture, and not be a problem for movement trays...

Umm why not just reapply a texture over it? Sprinkle finer grain material with white glue over the old stuff.

Have you fully considered all the possibilities fire has to offer?

But seriously, I'd just buy a mat.
I told you so. You damned fools.
