Wargames Board
« on: November 26, 2015, 06:49:57 PM »
I managed to get my hands on lots of hardboard from my work so I decided to try and make a wargaming board.
The boards, that were otherwise going to be binned, each measure 2ft by 2ft so I thought I would put together a few to make a modular table that should hopefully store away reasonably easily.

Step by step

A quick trip to Wickes t by some wood and I made batons for the hardboard to screw onto. A bit of filla to cover the screws and add some texture.

Sand added.

Base coat.

Several drybrushes in.

This is when I realised I had run out of flock.

After a trip to the model store I managed to buy the wrong flock so ended up having to blend it with others that I have. I think it just about matches and is helped by the addition of several different shades anyway.

Finished board. Overall I am fairly satisfied with it could maybe do with a bit more flock in places.

Please feel free to comment.

Aye, top work. :) You wouldn't notice the join in the flock. (And if you did, it'd just help the natural irregular effect.)

Very smart!

I'm soon going to be making my own first board (or first in over 10 years away from the hobby), and will be wanting something smart and realistic looking which is easy to store, so I'd very interested in seeing you put together the rest of the boards, and how they all fit together. How do you plan to have the 2' square boards stay firmly in place when fit together?

Thanks for the comments. It's dried a bit more now and the brighter green that I was unhappy with has dulled down. This wasn't all that apparent in the photo but I'm much more satisfied now.

In all honesty I was just going to line them up next to each other, nothing too fancy. I plan on adding rubber stoppers to the bottom (the type you get with flatpack furniture and the like, but I don't know the technical name) which I am hoping should minimise movement and slippage. I'm also going to put a small support in the middle of the board so should anyone lean on it, as people are prone to do, it should mean that it's a bit more durable and won't just break.

Interesting, the reason I ask is because 'back in the day' I used 2' by 4' boards, three slotted together to make a 6' b 4' board, and they slotted together with a tongue and groove... I think they were loft panels? (I was 15 years old at the time, my dad found them for me! He did very well in finding the perfect boards for wargaming considering he had no interest in my hobby and really didn't understand what it was all about!).

I'm leaning towards 2' square boards like you this time round, but am considering perhaps building some sort of 'frame' to sit them in so they won't move.
