James Dean.
Sailor from Wild at Heart.
Salt Lake City religious fanatics. (àla GW's Dark Future but 50's style).
Boring geeks with huge glasses.

Surfers.

Tiki-party freaks in hawaian shirts and bad haircuts.

I like the Tiki freaks idea! Do that one!
"When to keep awake against the camel's swaying or the junk's rocking, you start summoning up your memories one by one, your wolf will have become another wolf, your sister a different sister, your battle other battles, on your return from Euphemia, the city where memory is traded." - Italo Calvino

How about a "not Rod Serling"? He only ever observes the action, never joining in :P

Love it!

How about a group of television sitcom fanatics. You know, "Donna Reeds", and "Make Room for Daddys" with baseball bats, clubs, etc. Reminds me of one of my favorite lines from "Destroy All Humans"

"My kitchen is the cleanest and prettiest in this whole town. And I'll crush ANYONE who disagrees, with my dainty manicured fist!"

I've been thinking some more about the Tiki gang idea, and it could actually be a pretty cool addition, IMHO. Some thoughts:

-They could have a half-savage look. Combining Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses with grass skirts and tribal warpaint. That kind of stuff.

-They've learnt how to grow a mutant strain of sugar cane in irradiated fields. They use this to make their own aguardiente, which they drink in great quantities (possibly mixed with more sugar cane juice, in some kind of bastard version of an umbrella drink). However, the sugar cane has mutated in such a way that the aguardiente makes the drinker go a little bit deranged. Which could explain why they've become so savage.

-They could have some special type of squad or characters that wear big Tiki masks over their faces and are good at sneaking around, launching ambushes and spooking enemies.

-Mutant land sharks! Or giant land-dwelling crabs, or something.

Tiki-freaks: great idea, but Hawaiian shirts to paint, how scary is that!

How about NAACP figures, beatniks, hillbillys & cowboys (thinking Roy Rogers types in 50's loud western wear)

Gotta have Senator McCarthy & his anti commie lackies!!

Oh & please, please, please a Jane Mansfield or Mamie Van Doren figure if it's not too expensive with all that extra metal for the casting!  Hubba-hubba

I just did a Google image search on "Hawaiian shirt" and "aloha shirt", and most of the shirts look like they could be painted on a 28mm figure with the same basic principle as painting camo, only in more vibrant colours. Just do specks of different colours, and nevermind having them look like anything discernable.

Gotta some great books on the Aloha shirt & as long as my eyesight holds out, wanna give a couple a go.  Thanks for the suggestion Rhoderic, somehow I think what you suggested is probably gonna be the way I'm really going to paint them!

How about some of the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang figures? Some of them, such as the KGB figures look usable.  Will the Eureka NBC Soviet figures be appropriate for this time span?

You're welcome. One might perhaps go half a step further and paint the specks in vague patterns so they resemble flower petals or palm fronds or whatever, but it's the kind of thing where I think you could be very haphazard about it and it'll still look right.

Another upside is that, same as when painting camo, no highlighting is required. It would only ruin the effect.

What about a Boy Scout Troop?  They could be survivalists and Ranger types.  Have Cub Scouts as juves. And the Scout/Pack Master as the leader. In the '50's they would be wearing the neck scarfs and the Baden Powell type hats... the kind you see drill sergents wearing.  They would be able to build rope bridges and pontoons, lookout towers, and seige equipment in the field.  Also be able to forage for food.  Give them for weapons the dread scouting knife, hatchet, axes, bow and arrows, slingshots, and some rifles.  Always be prepared.  The Eagle Scout would of course be a veteran or elite trooper! lol

We're going to have to start a poll soon: "What 1950s style post apocalyptic ganger are you?"
