Squats from non dwarf historical/fantasy miniatures
« on: 03 September 2017, 08:44:08 PM »
Seen as background fluff states squats were descendants of inhabitants of a high gravity planet,And most 25/28 mm non heroic scale miniatures are half to three quarters the size of 40k figures.
Has anyone ever made a war and/army using non dwarf miniatures.
I like the idea of the high gravity /short people but dont buy into the biker/Viking image.
So am going to do a large warband using non chunky  28 mm

Have you seen the Hasslefree Grymn?

About 20mm to the eyes, and much slighter than GW Squats. Beautifully scuplted too.

I've used the above mentioned Grymn in 40k a long time ago, I used them as space marine scouts with a bit of licence for weapons load outs.

So what are your ideas for these not Dwarfs then?

You mentioned 28mm 'non-Dwarf' miniatures... are you considering using smaller scale, humans as larger scale Dwarfs or are you planning on converting all your humans into Dwarfs by chopping them down?

If you have an idea of what you want to achieve, it will be easier to suggest a range.

Also, cost is on your mind... is a choice of material too? Plastic/resin/metal or doesn't it matter?

If you aren't going to convert, even 25mm ranges will still seem like quite tall Dwarfs... and one of the character traits of the race is their stockiness (due to having to deal with higher gravity worlds).

The range that I would probably choose would be the Stargrunt range from GZG ( https://shop.groundzerogames.co.uk/25mm-stargrunt.html ) but it is very difficult to highlight a range that has so few images in the online catalogue.

Other ranges are Denizen: http://www.denizenminiatures.co.uk/files/25mm04.htm
Moonraker Spacelords (particularly the Yoyodoyne): http://moonrakerminiatures.com/yoyodyne.htm

Yes smaller scale humans ,material not fussed
I'm thinking that at one time as they were humans that started living on high gravity planets  they would at the start not been so short an stocky but smaller than normal humans ,assuming it took a few generations to develop?
I just wondered if anyone had the same idea or seen similar on other forums?

It's not something I've ever seen... mostly people either use existing Space Dwarf miniatures, kit-bash Space Dwarfs from fantasy/sci-fi Dwarfs or chop down humans to Dwarf size.

The thing with smaller scale miniatures is that unless you are very careful picking a range, all of the proportions are reduced so they will end up with smaller heads that won't necessarily fit with the style you are going for. The Yoyodoyne (particularly the shigaru) are probably a good bet to give it a go... maybe the Denizen Ventaurans... but getting the right mix of size and proportion may be a bit of a struggle... because they won't be Dwarfs, they'd be small humans... for Dwarfs you need to reduce the body size whilst keeping hands/feet/heads the original size.

As Inso has said, smaller scale minis end up being out of proportion. Way back when I got a load of GZG's 25mm star grunt minis hoping to use them as imperial guard, but they just look totally wrong next to 'human' minis. Even if their stature is smaller, the heads should remain about the same size, as with hands and of course weaponry, but thats not the case. Sorry to blow down your thought ship, but I seriously doubt it'll look right.
