6mm Rulesets
« on: February 20, 2018, 04:43:50 PM »
I'm looking for a good reference to various 6mm sci-fi rulesets.  I've found some on the web, but they're older and the games are long gone.  Currently, my group is going to be starting Horizon Wars, but the forces are all the same.  It would be nice to have some variation in races.

Or, can anyone recommend a good ruleset that has multiple races?

I've downloaded the rules for Dirt Side, but haven't read them yet.

Thanks.

Here are a few:
Strike Legion by Legionnaire Games - sort of a spiritual successor to Dirtside, has a fair bit of crunch but the core game is straightforward.  Comes in a compendium now, with options for things like organic "vehicles", supertech (nano tech and computer viruses) and steampunk if you want them.  Has its own background, but flexible enough for just about anything.  I'm using it for Traveller and Hammer's Slammers.  Downside is that sometimes there are too many options and weeding them out (like the really anachronistic VSF stuff) is a pain.

Laserstorm by Nordic Weasel Games - fast playing game in the NWG style, I don't have it but I like NWG's style in their rules I do have.

And Dirtside is still pretty good, I don't think you'd go wrong with it.  Several human types and a couple of alien races exist in the GZG universe, not sure if they're in DS per se.  But the weapon and tech options will let you build different types of units.

Horizon wars is great, I came up with some extra units and army building rules that are pretty balanced in my playing about of it - I'd been playing smaller, 'small scale rogue trader' type games (3 units of troops, an APC and a tank... that sort of size of engagement). It also gives some more melee focussed units, works well for 40k style stuff.

Here's a blog post, and you can download the units incase you're interested:

I'm gonna checkout Lazerstorm and Future War Commander.  Thanks smirnoff and boywundyrx for the suggestions

Jagannath, I'll check out your stuff as I also really love HW.  I agree with you in wanting a more "soft" instead of "hard" sci fi system.

Jagannath, it looks like there are a few typos where your switch P and CR.  Here's an example:

"Any P spent on CR is"

Shouldn't that read:

"Any CR spent on P is"

No sorry, that's just because I typed them quickly, more for myself than others. In my version you only get CR by buying them in exchange for P. 3 CR = 1P. The blogpost should make it a little bit more clear.

Hope Laserstorm works for you Clandaith. In case you need it, here's one place where it's available to buy as a pdf:

Polyversal is almost set to release after the Kickstarter. It looks to be a really solid ruleset with lots of flexibility to create units.
