Great stuff! I really like your goblin-to-dwarf conversions. Tolkien said his goblins were taken almost entirely from George Macdonald, and he uses "goblin" and "gnome" as synonyms.

The (awful!) pedant in me couldn't help noticing this passage in your blog:

Then we have some GW Moria Goblins. I hold to the theory that Tolkien used Goblins and Orc interchangeably, but that Goblins are the smaller Snaga type Orcs.

I agree with the first part - Tolkien says explicitly that "goblin" is a translation of "Orc". But the second point is surely confounded by the fact that he uses "goblin" more than once to describe the Uruk-hai of Isengard (as well as various other larger orcs like Azog, Bolg and Grishnakh). And then there are the "goblins of huge size" in Bolg's bodyguard, who are formidable warriors and can hardly be Snaga-types!

An excellent point Hobgoblin! This is why I get so confused in his use of Goblin, mixed with how it has been interpreted by others, including Peter Jackson and Ralph Bakshi. We have Orcs small enough for Frodo and Sam to go unremarked for example.

Some of my older work, frustrating impatience with white and flesh tones led to chalkiness. Lesson learned, thinner paint with more coats. The extra effort pays off in the long run.

I love that Ent.... I don't mind the roman's and others... Middle Earth was about legends and lore, about known and unknown things... about present and ancient... I don't see why a certain type of armor and helmet should be disallowed because we know of a period in our reality that it existed. plus... we all know the Romans had some of the best looking armor. I say go for it!
