Dr. Mathias's Doctor Who

A few years ago I binged watched all the Doctor Who episodes on Netflix that were available. They had the modern stuff which I greatly enjoyed, but I have a soft spot for the 4th Doctor as that was who I watched as a kid. There were only a couple 4th Doctor episodes available before Netflix dropped them entirely.

Anyway, as of late I've been going though the Tom Baker episodes in order (via BluRay and DVD) and have gotten a bug to acquire some miniatures. I decided on the old school chunky look so they will fit better with my overall collection of stuff.

First up, the 4th Doctor and his initial companions Harry Sullivan and Sarah Jane Smith. Big thanks to Orctrader for setting me up with the Sarah Jane miniature!



As you can see, they aren't the best likenesses but at the time (mid 90s) they were good enough

Wonderful painting! Somewhere I have a small bag of old Dr Who figures I put in the wrong box.  Looking forward to seeing more of these painted.

I’m slightly surprised, because while I know you to be a man of great good taste and artistic discretion, it was always said that Americans didn’t ‘get’ Dr. Who. So it’s interesting to see your interest in it 

I must admit, I don’t really get it myself, speaking as a Brit 
I used to watch it religiously as a kid / teen in the 1970s. But it just didn’t grab me when they brought it back from the dead.

Hahaha, you have greatly overestimated me

The USA appears to me anyway to be FAR more obsessed with Star Trek and Star Wars, but there is a decent Who following- certainly a big part of geek culture if the amount of merch in the GenCon dealer's room is anything to go by I've discovered quite a few of my non-gaming friends are Who fans as well, much to my surprise.

I wouldn't say that I was a hardcore fan as a kid, I saw it only rarely and years after the episodes were originally released, but I always found it a little scary and intriguing. Elisabeth Sladen (along with Erin Gray from Buck Rogers) probably set me up with my tastes on feminine beauty and headstrong women 

On another note I didn't 'get' Monty Python until about a year ago, so I can't be a reliable arbiter for taste

Python and Who were on late at night on our public tv station in Chicago when I was a kid.  Horrible reception half the time but we never missed an episode of Baker's Who.

Lovely work. Those old Harlequin Sarah Jane's look so much better than they do on the Black Tree site, I'd order some if I thought they'd ever arrive.

Poor old Harry looks like he might have been replaced by an Auton though....
