Orcyboy's hobby blog of fantasy related stuff.
« on: March 06, 2021, 08:33:10 AM »
Hi all,

Long time lurker first time blogger (here).

Over the past year I put together what I call a Border Princes mercenary army.  I am long time warhammer fan so naturally I built a backstory around my own warhammer world  (as opposed to GWs warhammer world).

For the core of the army I used Fireforge's Forgotten World northmen, nice generic looking fellas.  I tried to go for more subdued colors and was hoping they'd have a little Balkan's look to them.

Here is King Philippos grand army.

The phalanx of 42 spearmen to hold the line. This was my first attempt at printing out decals to decorate the shields and I think it came out pretty well.

A unit of halberds to add a little oomph.

The bowman

Artillery!

The vanguard of the army, the Gray Cloak Companions.

The light cavalry. Not the best work. They are pieced together from left over parts and I used toy horses.  A little bit of a disapointment, maybe if I added more tack to the horses but I got bored with it and move on.

If you really need a job done right, hire yourslf some ogre soldiers.

And last for today. Benny the Bouncer!  The coolest giant I own. I picked him up on ebay on whim for next to nothing. I had no idea what I had gotten. All I had to go by was a date and a Ral Partha stamp on the bottom but I couldn't find him in any Ral Partha or Iron Winds Metals catalogs. Eventually I sourced him to a semi-obscure game called Carnage which I also happened to own but I had no idea they made supplements for it. https://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/166459/carnage
Now he serves as a bit of muscle in king Philippos' army.

Thanks for looking!

Very nice figures, good choice of colours and a well thought out idea.

Looking forward to more.

Thanks for sharing

Great looking army - and I like the sound of it not being linked into the "official" GW canon. The choice of miniatures fit well together and the paint job really brings them into a cohesive whole. Nice work.

Do you have anyone for them to fight yet, and will we be seeing any batreps or backstories for each unit soon?

I really like the look of these, subdued colours, but not dull. The shields are very nice.

Great work.

Really nice force. Great take on the Forgotten World Northmen, it's good to see them out in the wild. Have you shared on the Fireforge page on Facebook? They'd love to see your work, I'm sure. And as said, the shield decals really take this force to the next level.
