BSC2021 Vanvlak's Field
« on: April 06, 2021, 04:39:05 PM »
In the last year I started a couple of threads which went nowhere and nothing else - I have been absent for a long while.
I chose what should be a fun and easy project - I might have already identified all the bits too.
This will definitely be on a planet which is not Earth. The idea started out as a jungle, but the actual surface set me thinking, and there is something I might use to make this a field instead - an alien equivalent of the typical film-scene tall cornfield with people running around completely hidden from each other; except in my case they won't be running as it would not count as difficult terrain!

Sounds like a fun idea  :)
That's what I'm hoping - at least fun enough to keep me working on it. I find myself with less and less time to work on models, so choosing something fun helps.

I'm also  going for a simple build, which however just got a teensy little more complicated than planned..... it dawned on me that plugging in a load of identical aquarium plants would fall foul of the rules, as it's just a collection of manufactured products (however weirdly painted they would be).
So instead it's not the field which will make the terrain difficult, but an infestation. I also have a bit I 'recovered' (no, I was not trawling bins again) which I would really like to include, although it scarcely fits the theme. For now...

The jungle idea I had toyed with is out (for now).

My original idea was a junkyard, but I assembled that years ago (still not painted!), and it was an exercise in clearing out bits I would not use for anything else which I am not keen to repeat!

Getting excited & making jokes about dropping Nepalm on little Asian Children in a Viet' village doesn't make it ok just because 'it's wargaming & not real'. You wanker scum need to look again at the real photographic horror of such chemical weapons. Seriously Disgusting mind set amongst some you.

So, are you a 'Bin Raker' come 'Skip Diver' too? lol

[/quote]
Guilty as charged  :D
I'll post a pic later in the week of the scrapyard - it's just a pile of junk really, glued, sprayed and going nowhere until they're painted - but definitely dangerous!

As for the infestation: the idea behind it is probably plagiarised from the red weed from The War of the Worlds.
The execution is going to be very different. So anything but red weed. Except it might be red.

This is the best part of the competition - looking for bits  :D

lol We can start 'B.R.A.C' here then, the 'Bin Rakers Anonymous Club'
I'd sign up, only I lost my pen in that last skip.

I can see just how very much that would prove to be 'Difficult Terrain'. It could hinder or harm through all manner of reasonings, of which you can set the stage for in it's manner of doing 'hinder or harm' by whatever you say it to be or do, &, in any place, anywhere.
Especially if it ------- a ----- -----.  ;D

cheers.

I remembered something lurking in the cellar, so I went back to field from infested field - and if I don't find the lurker, just naming it field doesn't mean it can't be invested: the more open description gives me more leeway.
@Clach Uma - you might not get to see the infestation after all, but even if I go for a boring regular field, I'll try to include a tiny infestation, ready to spread.

 :D
It was actually an old plastic lawn effect mat!
And the tiny bit infected stuff will be there all right. Obviously if the mat thing doesn't work out, the invasion will take over the field again....

As promised - a pic of the junkyard model I had worked on years ago, still needs texturing and paint.

As for the 2021 entry, a pic of the potential bits - I will not use all of these, choosing some will exclde the others. And inevitably, additional stuff will be added.

A general view of stuff:

Potential plant bits - these are aquarium plants of course:

More aquarium stuff - filter components:

Another type of aquarium filter, together with a rolled up single strip of material from an old vertical blind:

The rescued artificial turf sort of mat:

Now I just have to sort things out and decide on a design. The only 100% certainties are that (1) it will be on a 12" x 12" modular board, like the junkyard shown above; and (2) some degree of infestation will be included.

And here is what it looks like so far.

At the top is a ploughed field with a floodlight structure collapsed on it.
At lower left is a hydroponics tank - this will suffer some damage too later on.
At bottom left is a small row of plants - or at least shoots.
And at right is an enclosure of sorts. They keep stuff in there. We don't talk about it much.

I still have to pick and choose and construct the plants themselves of course, and design the appearance of the path between the tank and the enclosure.

I will tackle the project as a series of small projects:
1) the ploughed field
2) the collapsed floodlight
3) the hydroponics plant
4) the encolsure
5) the row of plants
6) the path
not necessarily in that order.

Fantastic use of found items. The grate from the aquarium filter is perfect SciFi.

Are those aquarium filters expensive? They'd be great for Star Wars stuff.
