Tactical Painter's Second World War in 20mm (updated 07 09 25)

I thought it might be easier to follow in the footsteps of others and create a single thread for posting work on my 20mm Second World War collection. Latest additions are for my early war Germans and specifically with the 1940 Chain of Command campaign we are currently playing set in the Netherlands. I've had a few of these sitting on the shelf of shame for a while - they were made and primed and this campaign was the incentive to get them moving (also part of a NY resolution to finish off as many unfinished projects as I can before starting anything new).

The PzKpfwI are a mix of kits, with two from s-models and one the very old kit from Fujimi. The crew figure is from the Orion plastic Panzer WWII Soldiers set.







The PzKpfwII is also from s-models and the crew figure is again from the same Orion set as the PzI.

Nice work, great modelling, the S Model kits as you say are a nice balance between gaming and modelling, but for early 1940 (Case Yellow period) they should be in the two tone grey/brown camo scheme.

Ignore him - everyone knows Panzers are grey. Until they are yellow.

I've had a collection of figures and vehicles for China that I put together for Crossfire many years ago. More recently I've based them individually for rules like Chain of Command, there's not a lot to choose from when it comes to this theatre in 20mm, so there's a mix of existing and converted figures and kits. Part of my NY resolution for 2022 was to finish off as many uncompleted projects as possible before embarking on any new ones (I know, I know....famous last words). Anyhow, so far at least, I've been doing that quite successfully.

Last year I made up the Armourfast Achilles. I detailed it with a bit of scratch building and plundering the spares box to make up an interior for the turret. To finish it off it needed stowage on the exterior and a crew. I have a couple of the resin stowage sets from Value Gear which are, perhaps unsurprisingly, great value. I couldn't find a specific crew and so I've used figures from various AB Figures sets. The Armourfast kits can be rather basic but I find with a bit of detailing they can be very presentable.







Next up was an Archer. This one is from Early War Miniatures and was a mix of resin and metal. Not the crispest casting by any means but, a bit like Armourfast, much can be done by adding a few details and a crew. The crews for British self propelled AT guns came from anti tank gun units not armoured units and so didn't wear the black beret of the RAC (although from what I can see, they did wear Pixie suits). In my case I've kept the crew in the infantryman's steel helmet, as I've seen several pictures of crews like this. Once again the crew is made up of AB Figures and these come from the 17 pounder AT gun crew.

Great painting. Lovely looking efforts as usual, with one slightly jarring thing which is the black bull insignia (11th Armoured) looks too big..   maybe 28mm decals on 20mm vehicles?
