Psyber's MOTU Battleground Painting Log
« on: February 13, 2023, 04:02:13 PM »
As someone who paints really slowly, and never ever finishes a complete project, what better way to hurry myself along than to START YET ANOTHER PROJECT?  lol

So yeah, I got caught up in the nostalgia buzz around Archon's Masters of the Universe: Battleground launch last year, and I've been working my way through the characters.

Up front: these are some of the nicest plastics I've seen outside of GW. Compared to other efforts currently in the marketplace (Marvel: Crisis Protocol, I'm looking at you), these ones are head and shoulders above them in terms of tooling and user-friendly design. With very few exceptions, they're a joy to assemble and paint.

That's my honest review out of the way. On to my first paint job - the man himself. He Man!

Rear view:

I'm not usually a 'non-metallic metal' guy, but I've gone for a simplified, cartoony style of NMM on these models, just because it seemed in keeping.

Cool beans man! Love the MOTU miniatures and they are so cool to paint. Love your NMM.

Great work on He-Man. Good luck on juggling the multiple projects.  That trick never works for me... lol

On the one hand, it ensures I never get bored of a project. On the other hand, it ensures I never finish any either.

Next up, the instigator of the fiercest debate in MOTU history: Are those wings red, or blue?  lol

Stratos:

Apparently the red/blue divide comes down to which era of toy you had as a kid. For this project, I'm making it a rule that if ever there's any discrepancy in colour schemes across the various lines, I'm going back to the original 80s animated series as the deciding factor. So red it is!

There are so cool. I really don't want to buying to this but the nostalgia is strong and the minis look great!

The red jetpack/blue wings combo was a variant. I'm tempted to paint mine like that just because. Also thinking of going with the cartoon Evil-Lyn instead of original yellow-skin Evil-Lyn, and mini-comic Trap Jaw with green skin.

Mine won't look nearly this clean, though  :o

He-Man's mentor and bestie, Duncan, aka Man-At-Arms. I never really realised that orange is a tricky colour to paint, but it took a fair amount of trial and error to get something I was happy with. Just as well, really, because there is a lot of orange in this range!

And a group photo of the three amigos.

Ah, now I know why these feel so familiar! I saw these on the MOTUB group on Facebook before!
Excellent painting man, love your style. Think your Teela and beastman are the best ones, so neatly painted :)

Yeah, I'm trying to get everything into one place, but I have to first get all the photos off my camera, onto flickr, then onto here, so it's taking a while (because I have a brain like a sieve and I keep forgetting lol). I've got some new stuff still to photograph once I'm up to date.

Beautiful work! You definitely got the orange sorted out, it looks great. I also find orange challenging- it makes sense to me, given that it’s a mix of red and yellow and I find both of those a pain too!

Couple of baddies to upload!

Evil Lyn:

Slightly blurry close-up:

And ol' Fishface himself, Mer-Man.

Evil Lyn was actually a bit of a pain to clean up and assemble. In fact, so far the worst models have been all the female characters, mainly because they're so realistically proportioned and dynamically posed that they end up relying on sticking very flimsy pieces to other very flimsy pieces. Just about got away with this one, although some of the joins are ropey up close.
