Oldskoolrebel's Workbench (redux)
« on: April 09, 2023, 07:47:36 PM »
Hello folks,

I've been pottering away in the background, and thought it might be nice to share some of my work. I've mainly been playing D&D recently; although Pulp Alley and M&T are still simmering away on the back burner.

I've had these three log cabins kicking around for a few years now. I'm not sure of the manufacturer, but I'm sure someone will recognise them. The models themselves are quite basic, and it looks as though the moulds are a bit old now- there are plenty of air bubbles and a loss of details. The interior was non-existent, so I added some floor boards and some filler on the inner walls.

I've also added some details on the outsides as well, tree stumps, logs, etc. Hopefully this will make them feel a little more lived in.

The five smaller bases in the centre feature some resin tree stumps. My plan is to use them with the rather excellent terrain sabot bases produced by Oshiro. I'll be mixing them with trees, to provide a bit more variety. I finished the sabots a few weeks ago. I'm pretty happy with the results.

I look forward to eventually being in a position to play a game!

That's the great thing about those sabot bases; you can have them represent all sorts of different terrain depending on what is modelled in the bases.

The bases look great, I hope I make as nice a job on mine! Like you say, they're very useful bits of terrain. You could have replacement tree stumps for a felled woodland relatively easily.

I like the details you've added to the huts, it will certainly make the table more immersive for gaming. I'm always torn between adding bases a mid base details to buildings, but in this instance I think you've got it spot on.

Cheers Codsticker, that's what I love about them.

That was part of the plan, some cleared forest near a lumber camp.

I think I prefer basing buildings, to be honest. While you lose some utility, you can make them a bit more cohesive. Plus you can really build up a little story. Sadly these ones came with an approximately 5mm resin base, that stuck out like a sore thumb. I mounted them on mdf, and attempted to blend the resin into the base- we'll see how successful I was.

I managed to do a bit of work on the cabins over the weekend. I have finished the exterior, the inside needs a drybrush, and then I get to start my favourite bit- landscaping! The resin tree stumps painted up well.

I'm fairly happy with the results, although it's taken a fair bit of work to get them to this stage! I'm sure after some static grass and tuffs they will really pop.

They're looking good. The tufts should really make them pop.

Cheers for the kind remarks folks.

I managed to finish these tonight. I'm really happy with how they turned out, I think the grass and tufts really finish them off.

I'll need to start preparing more trees, and some scatter terrain to fit with the cabins; perhaps a couple of small fields of corn or lumber stacks. The great thing about this style of terrain is that its pretty system and era agnostic, which means I should be able to use it for everything from F&IW, to pulp to fantasy.

The next thing on the workbench are some D&D miniatures, mostly a mixture of reaper dark legends and bones. Hopefully, I'll be able to post some pictures of these later in the week.
