Just heard about this yesterday through your e-mail newsletter, Patrick. I'm a fan of Exploit Zero (though I always default to calling it Hardwired still) so I'm looking forward to this.

For a while now I've been collecting figures for a Monster Hunter International inspired war game, which overlaps what I see in the previews for WNC, but with a lot (sometimes *a lot*) of firepower, does WNC allow for a special forces level of weaponry?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Special Forces Firepower... Ouch. Sorry, no.

In fact, it's designed specifically that the players operate at a time, in a place where no one believes in monsters, let alone wants people who believe in them to be running around with full-auto firearms. Your characters are trying to not get eaten by werewolves - or arrested and committed to the local psych-ward.

monster hunter international game...well when i heard about it i thought this is a cool idea for a game.. I love the books, but the company made about $340,000 and had nothing to show or even talk about what the rules are like...sold on the figures I guess... I just checked, 45 updates and still no images or talk about rules.... great shame really..Looking forward to when nightmares come... and what we can do with it... roll on March

I have liked most of the Osprey rules, so may well get this one too. :)

It's looking very promising, fingers and toes are crossed :)

Back when Buffy was either still on its first run in the UK, or just after it had finished, I converted up most of the Foundry Near Future figures for use in that sort of world. Pistols became pistol bows, rifles were carved out and replaced with crossbows etc (I'm still not sure how I didn't lose a finger in that project, as everything was metal). As a result of that, I probably have more than enough to start gaming with this straight away, which makes a nice change.

It is a bit early, but for figures, I would recommend:
  • West Wind for their Gothic monsters
  • Mantic Nightstalkers for some nightmare monsters - including pumpkin headed folks
  • GW has just put some rather nice looking vampires up for pre-order
  • Hasslefree's not-Scooby gang (both pre and post apocalypse versions)
  • Nolzur's Marvelous Miniatures for cheap and cheerful monsters
  • Reaper Chronoscope always has useful things in it
  • Some of Warlord's Weird War figures, like their werewolves and werebears
What else ???

All my stuff for MHI is 15mm and from various sources, didn't know they'd KS'd an official miniatures game for it, though I was aware of the RPG. I was planning on using Fear & Faith for my project, looks like I still will, but will probably check this out too.

I'm thinking this might be a decent set for putting 1920s Cthuhlu adventures on the table. I find most other sets I've played seem to emphasise heavy firepower, which isn't really the point of Call of Chtuhlu.

I will take a look at it as I'm planning on a pulp horror game soon.

This looks really tempting. I've been thinking about trying something more supernatural with my 1920s Bootleggers/Mounties stuff and it sounds like this will fit the bill perfectly.

Let's face it, the Osprey Blue books are cheap enough to encourage trying new games/systems out.

OK I've just read the suggested articles and I've pre-ordered the rules.  :D

I have shedloads of Gothic Horror stuff (Westwind and others) so I should be good to go!

I think with this ruleset I may have found a use for my 'not' Mulder and Scully figures I bought years ago.

I wonder if they will stretch to allow use of my Crooked Dice 'Paranormal Investigators' as well?

Don't see why not. "Modern" covers a fairly broad period. Anything 20th century up to present day.
I imagine one could slot in steampunk figs without too much difficulty.
