“Tanks” in Dragon Rampant
« on: 27 January 2024, 03:44:48 PM »
So… I have this from my Folk Horror project (although do not appear to have taken photos since it was finished), how would you stat it for Dragon Rampant?

I’ve been inclined to treat it as a greater war beast for the armour, adding ranged attacks. But don’t think the move should be as high as 10. Really I see it as moving slower than a man. I’ve also considered heavy ranged, but then that doesn’t have the armour.

I see it being very heavy, slow, well armoured but with no melee. Thoughts?

Has anyone done Empire Steam Tanks in DR?

Maybe have it as 'Heavy missiles' with the following stats.

Attack -
Move 6+
Shoot 6+
Courage 4+
Armour 4
Attack value -
Defence value 6
Shoot value/range - 4+/12" (weighty projectiles)
Max move 6"
Strength points 12
Points 6

Maybe include a special rule that allows it to split its shoot dice into two 'pools' (6 & 6) and therefore can target two units instead of the normal one.

I was going to recommend creating your own stats line that suits the model.

I've not fully read the rulebook, are there bits on how to do that?

Yeah, I'd figured weighty projectiles, I like the split fire rule though.

Thinking about it, maybe increase the Move up to 7+ given that the chances of it not working would be a bit high.

Not really but once you've played a few games and gotten used to how the unit profiles work it's not that difficult to make your own stats up if something doesn't suit from the existing lists. Try not to make it overly powerful though as it'll take some of the fun away from the game.

Great looking model!

Looking at the original vehicle itself it is described in Wikipedia as

Hand cranked by a crew of 8 and being heavy.
  Guns pointing in every direction
  "Sloped" wooden armour

It should therefore be very slow and unable to enter any sort of uneven or soft ground, be able to fire a decent range, perhaps from 4 45° arcs, but a limited number of times as there doesn't seem to be provision for supplies of ammunition in the space. Shouldn't be able to fire and move as it has limited crew. Turning might also be an issue.

It should be absolutely terrifying too..until it stops.

But the movement/bogging down and running out of ammo  it soon becomes vulnerable to anyone brave enough to approach it and cut their way in from the observation point at the apex. Leave that to the other player to work out! Is it dead or just waiting!

Might seems like an overly technical approach, but it might give you some pointers as to stats. 😊

The boring answer would be to use a Lion Rampant upgrade to heavy missiles/crossbows - pavise

+2/+1 armour vs shooting and combat respectively.
