28mm Scottish/Border Houses
« on: 23 February 2024, 09:12:06 PM »
Does anyone know of a source of 28mm models representing the Scottish/Border stone houses with turf roofs characteristic of the Middle-Ages onwards?  I'm after some for my Border Reivers and Montrose period games. I know you can get them in the US but am after a UK based source.  Pre COVID There used to be a manufacturer of resin buildings and accessories who I think was based in Scotland but I can't recall the name and I haven't seen them on the show circuit for many years.

Was it this lot?

I have a couple of thier cottages and a tower. A wee bit small for 28's but when you've seen the real thing...big doors and windows are a luxury most couldn't afford...or even had.

Chaps, thanks for the answers. Emir, no the supplier wasn't "Anyscale", and I'm afraid 1/76th may be too small albeit I may order one as a "test piece". Roger, Hudson and Allen is the US supplier I was thinking about. I'm not sure I want to spend £100 but it may come to that. I'm afraid I've had a really bad experience importing from the US and want to try to avoid it. I guess at least I have two projects to use them for with Border Reivers and Montrose. I loved your models and your mention of Colours Party Paints took me back to the early '90s when I switched to acrylics. My stock of Humbrol enamels got lost in a house move and Colour Party were selling at a local show so I stocked up .I wasn't sure they were still going.

I agree with Roger - H&A are my preferred ones.

I did see this recently which is nice.

Adrian's Walls used to do some as well but I can't see them on the site at the moment.

I appreciate the issue with getting the H&A stuff - love the models (and material used) but so hard to get in the UK.

Before Xmas I purchased the H&A Scottish houses, from the US into the UK.

I obvs can’t guarantee that anyone else will have the same experience as me but my transaction and shipping were both entirely trouble free.

Btw I have the H&A and the Fogou for the same village.
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2025 = 74
(2024 = 38; 2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

We found importing from the US with H&A pretty hassle free as long as you factor duties into what you expect to pay, again not everyone has hassle free with customs, especially from the US.

Colour party are definately still going, they only go to two shows a year Leeds and Sheffield I think, I live close enough to just go collect from Chris's house so am lucky, they are still about 75% of all the paints I use.

Von Stroheim, thanks. Looks interesting except for the 28mm price of nearly £30 per model. I'm waiting for a reply to the e-mail I sent to the US re H&A and might well end up going that way. I've also found a supplier called Hoka Hey who sell a resin croft which might do the business, albeit the buildings look a lot cruder than H&A.

Dungeon Artifacts on Ebay has some very good printed buildings in 28mm (and 15mm versions as well) usable for Border Reiver scenery (and most with removable roofs).  I bought two this past Xmas (can also find them at www.printablescenery.com); they are well constructed.    Look for the Highland Stone Barn (first two pictures below); Old Stone Barn (third picture); Country Stables (4th picture); Norman Stone Fort (5th - 7th)
