Command stand for the Mahdist war. I'll be using him as General Graham initially, but he could pull double duty as Stewart or other generals. He's joined by attendant and horse, a member of his staff, war correspondent Milton Prior, and his faithful pup!

Ran a game at Milleniumcon, Temple TX on Saturday! Right at about 200 figures, using the Men Who Would Be Kings rules. The Mahdists used the terrain and their ambush ability to great effect. They swept around from behind while charging from the cover of a dried riverbed and overran the British invaders. Beresford and the naval contingent were wiped out while the camel corps ran out of steam on the other side of the board.

Picked up Blood & Steel at the con and am wanting to try Sudan out with those rules next.

This was the very start of the era of camouflage/ natural coloured uniforms. There were British forces still in Red Coats at this time. I think the blue/grey was a British fatigue uniform so may have been used in the desert as a lightweight alternative, rather than to be less visible. Though it probably is less visible than red!

The grey uniforms were Wolseley's idea. He was big on more practical uniforms for the tropics and his troops in the Ashanti war had worn an experimental grey uniform, designed to be less visible and more comfortable, and it had been considered a success.

Consequently he had ordered grey uniforms for the Egypt expedition of 1882, but they failed to arrive in time and so were in storage in Egypt when the Sudan crisis erupted. They were issued to the troops sent there from the UK, as unlike the troops from India, they had no khaki uniforms.

  Very interesting certainly less noticeable than red uniforms though I would imagine they were still uncomfortably hot

Indeed. Seems they were made from the same serge material as the scarlet uniforms, so I find it rather unlikely they'd actually be any more comfortable in the heat of the tropics.
