Lunar Battle Report - Get to the Moonbuggy
« on: September 14, 2024, 04:57:32 PM »
I laid on a game of Lunar at Deal Wargames Club this week, the scenario involved a broken down Soviet Moonbuggy that was carrying some Lithium ore samples. The Cosmonauts were on their way to repair and recover, unfortunately, NASA had the same idea!

The playing area

The opposing sides, both teams had a Commander, a Technician to repair the buggy and a Combat Specialist in case things got nasty...........which of course they did.

Both teams advanced on the buggy but the Soviets get there first, Igor, the techie, got the buggy started but a hard blow from a NASA geology hammer was it conk out again.

A general shooting match then started, both Combat Specialists were armed with rifles and the Commanders had a Markham pistol each, plus a resin patch pack each, in case of any nasty accidents involving spacesuits.

The Soviet Commander went down as his suit had taken four hits, followed by his technician, luckily he used the patch kit to get himself fixed up and then repair the technicians suit. The NASA Commander went down due to some accurate fire from the Combat Specialist but again, his resin patch was put to good use and he was back in the fight.

The NASA techie was then shot in the back, falling dead to the regolith, the NASA Commander then shot the Soviet Commander who joined the NASA techie, read on the ground.

The Soviets managed to take advantage of the situation and got the buggy started, snatching an ore box up as they did before driving off to safety.

The American player had no hope of stopping the buggy as they were out of ammo so they snatched up the remaining ore boxes and headed back to their moonbase, the remaining Cosmonaut, weapon empty, made his way back to his Zvezda 13 base.

Both fatalities would have to be recovered later, a minor victory for the Soviets due to the loss of their leader, Moscow would be furious!

It was a fun game to play, ammo is very limited so any shots require some thought, the battle for the buggy got very tense but the Soviet player was able to shove the NASA techie far enough away to enable a swift escape, Lunar will be returning to the club again soon.

Great job - just shows that you don't need a huge table, thousands of figures, or loads of terrain to have an enjoyable game.

That looked like good fun :)

Are the physics modelled in the game? You mentioned that one character shoved another. Are the distances modifed to allow for 1/6 Earth gravity?

I have to admit that I'd be tempted to make the figure do tumbling motions, rather than just moving it from A to B ;D

Physics are modelled into the game, the advanced rules change the movement rate to better reflect the moon's gravity on movement and certain weapons with a big recoil can see the shooter blown off their feet. Melee attacks can have three effects, one is pushing your opponent back, how far depends on the difference in both die rolls and modifiers, the losing player can be pushed back 1" per point difference, placed prone and rolls a damage dice to see if the moon's harsh surface has torn their suit.

Oldgamer!
Your setup looks sharp! Really nice paint job on your figures, going to have to get back in the space race again. Inspiring work.
For those who haven’t played Lunar, a 6 miniature skirmish can be really intense. Any battlefield that is more dangerous than the guy trying to beat in your face shield with a geology hammer makes you have to think about your actions carefully.

My friend and I played Lunar last month with a similar scenario. I got crushed.
We both had six figures. All mine were killed while he lost only one. Still, it was
a fun game with a great board and nice figures.

Sounds like a fun game!  This is becoming semi-tempting — how long did this scenario take to play?

Funny how Lunar came out a couple of years ago but it is going thru a boom growth with all the coverage on LAF.
Fun game.
