Hey - that was good. Did zeppelins really dangle those metal boxes to drop bombs from? That's not a job I'd fancy... :o

They had spy baskets or cloud cars, and they were actually much cooler-looking than the thing in that film...

They didn't drop bombs from them, though. They were for navigating while remaining hidden. The Zeppelin would stay above the clouds while the car was lowered below them, providing navigation and bomb-aiming data to the main ship.

Crikey - if I'd seen that pic out of context, I'd have assumed it was from a pre-war pulp film. It still looks like a terrifying job, though. Imagine being stuck in that thing with just a metal cable snaking upwards to a huge zep holding you in place; makes me shudder to think about. Even worse, in a way, if the zep is hidden in clouds. I thought the cameraman in the "cherry-pickers" at cricket matches had a scary job but this is much worse......

In the Charley's War comic there was a pretty horrific scene involving a Zeppelin raid on London, where the captain severed the line of the observation basket so the Zepp could make good its escape, condemning the observer to a terrifying death.

The clip is really cool, makes me want to watch the whole show. Is it any good, and are there subtitled versions available?

Victorian Russian column destroyer by Ottoman artillery (from Russian movie Turkish Gambit. Great film, but without mass battles, because its adventure/decective movie)

Lets fight on sea! (Russo Japanese war and World War 1)

Battle of Tsushima from old japanese movie (I dont know the movie) Battle scene without computer effects but with great model ships. So it's looks quite realistic. I liked it!

Russian destroyer vs German battleship in World War 1. From russian movie Admiral (Адмирал) with subtitres. Dont like the subs, they are not very correct. The original dialogue text are better:

all these movie clips have rather little to do with VSF, apart from some being unhistorical.
I don't say this to rant, but to ask a question:

why is VSF so closely linked to colonial wargaming for some people?
can You tell?
