Cheers, richarDMB! ;D
In the early stages of the project I briefly considered building them from scratch but this would have cost me the last bits of sanity I have left, so I decided to use ready-made houses and put them in a new context. If you look in my gallery, you can even see the different layouts I have tried...

OK, you asked for it:

Front row: These are the wonderful buildings by dutch master modeller Gerard Boom. Except for the small house second to the left which is from Hovels. Geboom, as he is known on this forum, has an own homepage ( www.shiftinglands.com ) where you can get the houses.

The brilliant half-timber houses top right are from Steve Barber Models( http://www.sbarber-models.clara.net/main.html ) I like them very much because they look almost exactly like the half-timber houses up here in Northern Germany. These are produced in stackable floors and separate roofs, you can stack them as high as you like. The two towered city hall was also made by him.

The small church in the second row  on the left is made by Hovels as is the long house right behind it.

Different view:

The double-building in the second row are two identical ones by Hovels, I simply glued them to each other. The three buildings on the opposite side of the plaza are by JR Miniatures, originally intended for being used in FIW-era games, I believe.

The JR Miniatures Houses are fantastically detailed and have a very high casting quality but they are nearly impossible to degrease! The colour keeps rubbing off again and again.... >:(

All in all, I like the Geboom and Steve Barber stuff the most.
Hope that helped.

Wow  thats the most original idea i've seen for a gaming board in a long time. Totally awesome. Wish i'd seen the game at the show . Pictures will have to do though.

What are the JR Miniatures Houses made of? Plastic? If so then you should try a technique I've used to get the mold release out of the material. You but the parts in a pot of water and bring it to a slow boil. Once the water starts boiling you'll see a yellowish oil in the water, that's the mold release separating from the plastic. Once you see this happen you can turn the stove off. Be sure to let them cool before working with them because the plastic will be soft.

I hope this helps.

Hmmm....does that technique work with Resin as well?

I'd hate to flash boil my pretty toys...

Possibly. I don't remember if I used this technique on resign. The heat form hot injection casting (all plastics use this casting method.) causes the surface of the plastic to absorb some of the mold release. The boiling heats the surface just enough to separate mold release oil form the plastic. When I say boil in this context, I mean hot enough to see the tiny air bubbles forming on the bottom of the pan. Not a rolling boil were large air bubbles rise to the surface making the water choppy. That would be too hot. If you're not sure how a given piece of material will react, do what I do, try id with a piece of cast off sprue.
