Burma - The Forgotten War
« on: 31 May 2007, 01:09:39 PM »
I have to admit, matakishi's talking-about-Burma was contagious. Really contagious. Hmm...now I had a think and realized that God wants that I make a Burma project. And you know, if God wants something you better do it. I will do it. Because Burma is wonderfull. Burma means lots of armies and uniforms. Vehicles and support things. Burma is exotic and apart from them I have lots of beautiful jungles made by Grimm. And so on.

Currently I'm in the planinng and have some questions about suitable miniatures, namely...

1) Are the Artizan British Commonwealth forces suitable for Burma?
2) Do the the Foundry and TAG Chindits work well together?
3) Are there any Chinese WW2 miniatures out there?
4) Makes anyone Ghurkhas (except from TAG)?
5) Are there any figs for Indian National army?

actually I have a couple more questions but that's enough for the start :-)

The Artizan Australians and Sikhs are fine but all their British stuff isn't.

The Foundry figures should be ok with the TAG figures, but I don't have any Foundry Chindits to be sure. The Perry Germans are a little snaller than the BTD Germans but still work alright, and the BTD figures work with TAG.

No Idea about Chinese, probably not though.

I've only seen WWII Ghurkas from TAG, there are Foundry Ghurkas but they're colonial era ones.

Again, I don't think so. You could probably use some Copplestone figures from his BoB range if you didn't care too much that their equipement is a bit early. He does Ghurkas too I see.

Battle Honours WWII probably cover the ranges but their figures are not always good and most of their ranges of different troops from a single nation are the same figures with different heads. Their figures are also quite small.

I think Old Glory 15's has a squad pack of Ghurka's in their Battle Honors line.  (Or at least my FLGS has one that I have contemplated purchasing.)  I have the squad pack of Bersaglieri (10 figures) and it includes 2 smgs and one lmg w/asst gunner. The rest, including the LMG asst are armed with rifles

The Battle Honors line are "true 25" and are thinner and slighter  than the Artizan and  Copplestone, but that is not an issue for me in the least.

And, "they paint up good"

Are you sure? The Artizan ones look exactly like the guys on the Osprey cover:

I suppose they'd do. They're wearing the wrong uniform but at 28mm paint should sort that out.

I might get some myself.

The only WW2 Gurkhas I know are from TAG.  Would be interested to see if anyone knows if there is an alternative range.

My interest in this theatre is more in the earlier part - Fall of Singapore and all that.  Different uniforms for this period.  Generally similar to 8th Army, but neater than the Artizan guys.

BTW - there is an excellent memoir by John Masters called "The Road to Mandalay".  It recounts his experiences first as Brigade Major, then Brigade Commander of a Chindit Brigade.  After extraction, he is appointed Divisional second in command to a regular Army unit for the 1944 invasion of Burma.

Very well written, and captures very nicely the flavour of the period.

next must-have

British Humber armoured car MkIV from Bolt Action

A Humber armoured car of the 16th Light Cavalry patrols the approaches to Meiktila. The armored cars were constantly active, searching for any signs of a Japanese build-up
