What colour paint to use for German seeBattalion figs
« on: 15 May 2010, 10:13:12 AM »
I want to try and use a new colour scheme for my Pulp German seeBattalion figures and was wondering what colours others used for there German SeeBattalion figs. I use Foundry paints so colour schemes using these would be great

thanks all
steve

Hi Steve
I struggled to decide what to paint mine too,and although I would  prefer not to mix paints in the end I used a mix of GW Desert Yellow and GW Kommando Khaki and intended to highlight with increased amount of KK but to be honest I got a bit bored painting them and gave the basecoat a wash of Devlan Mud.
Here is a link to an earlier thread which includes a pic of the Prof's lovely figures, he mentioned Foundy Buff leather may be close , I am going to try that on my Brigade WW1 Askaris.

Sorry I can be more help

If I were trying to match the color in the Prof's pics with Vallejo I'd start with Green Grey / gris verdoso (101?) and Ger WW2 Beige Camo / cam aleman WW2 (103?)

If you look on the excellant German Colonial Uniform website, the colour of the tunic appears to be a darker shade ?

Will look at the vallejo colour guide later.

I agree, it seems to have more yellow than the color the Prof used. I'd look at dark yellow for that one. Sorry, I'm at work now and am not sure of the Vallejo color.

Actually i think the prof might be wrong i think the colour used is in fact Moss, a better foundru colour may be either canvas or buff, i might try a sample of all three at weekend and see what looks best

there is no "Khaki" as such
dyes turn out differently and also bleach differently.
want to try out something?

make a blob of plain yellow and drop a drop of plain black into it. mix it and start from there until You have Your preferred Khaki.
You can combine with green, brown and grey.
Then compare with an available colour

Next choice is whether to paint the helmets khaki or white. Reading the article on Chris' site I feel the issue is far from clear cut. All a matter of where and when (with a nice dose of confusion thrown in for good measure  :)).

Took me a while to find it but I knew I had read it somewhere. That most reliable of sources ::), The Osprey (Boxer Rebellion), has helmets as white and that khaki covers were issued but not universally worn. This would give a different appearance to a khaki helmet over a white one.

If you check the Colonial uniform website, there are some examples of genuine uniforms and they appear to be a browner colour than in the osprey book, also i believe the helmet became khaki (white for officers after 1901).
Not sure what colour to paint - so might do both colours on spare figs and see which looks best.

I want mine for East Africa 1905-07ish (Maji Maji). Khaki helmets became regulation in 1905 (though it would seem they were worn before this by some troops). Trouble is, I prefer the white. Damn pesky history getting in the way of my painting fun again!!!
