The Beaver Wars with SDS...
« on: June 01, 2010, 09:05:15 AM »
I was fascinated by Copplestones "Glory of the Sun" range for quite some time, but since there was no cav or cannons, I couldn't figure out what to do with it in a larger conflict.
Then a few weeks ago I stumbled over this little war in Canada:
[wiki]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver_Wars[/wiki]

It involved only inf on the french side and some lovely woodlnd indians... ;)
Since I like the Songs of Drums and Shakos ruleset I build a small force of the first uniformed unit in New France:
Carignan-Salières Regiment

The troops so far...

The pike wing...

And the musket wing...

...next on the list are some woodland indians. Either for french scouts or as Huron warriors.

Lovely work! I had resisted that Copplestone range, but you just blew a regiment-sized hole in all of my reasoning! I love US/Canadian frontier history AND Ganesha games!

Argonor, I'm sure those are Conquest Indians.

Just one question… Did the beavers win? ;)

Seriously that’s nice work DonVoss (both on painting and research) 8)

Interesting. I never thought they'd work so well for that. Quite uncanny, even if all those years of socials class (and a monotonous Einstein impersonator might have had something to do with that) sort of killed my interest in early Canadian history. :-X

Thanx for your comments... 8)

Okay here is a little update for the project.
My woodland indians so far. Probably too much for SDS, but perhaps I am going to use them for Triumph&Tragedy (blackpowder variant)... ;)

@Argonor
Of couse they are from conquest's great range, although I have a few more from the perrys... :)

I tried to dip some pagasus huts...

...and a few civilians...

...at last the evil dutch trader, who sells muskets to the natives, and his two daughters.

next on the list are more indians and e few more dutch to make a third party.

Oooh, is this a home-brewed variant or a full-blown supplement? I'm an avid long-time F&I gamer and owner of the basic T&T rules so I'd love to see this.

Home-made rules wich we use in our local gaming group for quite some time now. We play an ongoing pirate-campaign usually multiplayer-scenarios...

I tried to influence driscoles to make a "black-powder"-supplement for T&T, but no decision has been made yet... ;)

Ah, I see. I should get off my rear and do something similar. If Driscoles ever moves on it and you need playtesters or proof-readers please keep me in mind.

Last saturday we had a tiny convention in Berlin: 25-30 Gamers, 8 Tables of different sizes and periods.

I presented my beaver-wars-project, wich I completed in one week (30 miniatures, 3 wooden huts)... :D
2 players have to search for Peter de Hoeg, a dutch weapon trader. The french want to arrest him, the huron want to bring him to safety...
The players had to investigate the village, interrogate the civilians

Here are a few impresions of the table and the miniatures; table made by Dr. Puppenfleisch (thanx, man).

Starting points for the french.

Some of the french start in a boat.

SDS proofed ideal for a convention. Everybody understood the rules after 2 rounds of play... 8)

@Aaron
Thank you for our help. I will contact you, for playtesting... :)

compliments DonVoss, either for the figures and for the chosen period;

I had study a lot of books (Jesuit relations) about this period and have found lot of interesting articles concerning battles fought between French and Iroquois and Iroquois vs other tribes Hurons, Tionontati, Rique', Andaste.
I'm working on implememts my figures range and hope to post some in the close future.
